About the Owner

We have looked for a property in France for some time, with retirement in mind. I worked in financial services and my wife was a teacher. We live near London, in an area with many attractions: the river, famous buildings, parks and open spaces, proximity to London, etc. However, we wanted to find somewhere where we could unwind away from the bustle of what is a very busy area. This search eventually took us to Les Vallons - a haven of beauty and tranquillity.

Location

From the Owner

We fell in love with our house at first sight. It is in the perfect location ; from the garden all you can hear is birdsong and the sound of the cicadas and the views towards the Luberon are stunning. The garden is completely private; you are not overlooked by anyone. There are lovely walks all around, yet the buzzy village of Gordes with its sophisticated shops and restaurants is a 10 minute drive away and our local village, Murs (a 15 minute walk) has a general stores and a hotel with a good restaurant and a pretty outside bar where you can sit and enjoy an evening drink. Also very nearby (2 miles) are two Michelin starred restaurants, where you can eat on the terrace and enjoy the gorgeous views. Avignon, Arles, Orange and Aix en Provence are all easily accessible for a day trip.

Activity and Interests

Travel:

The nearest airport is Marseille (British Airways, EasyJet, Ryanair); just over one hour away. The airport at Nimes is a little bit further, as is Lyon. Flybe offers services from various UK airports to Avignon airport (40 minutes). The TGV station at Avignon provides an excellent service to Paris and is about 40 minutes away.

To drive from Calais, as we often do, takes about 9 hours. The roads via Reims and Troyes are good. It is very feasible to stop en route, e.g. in Burgundy.

Distances:

Murs is about 1 mile (a beautiful 15 minute walk), Gordes is 5 miles (10 minutes by car on an empty road). All the famous local villages and towns are typically 15-20 minutes' distance, as are the many local restaurants. Avignon is about 45 minutes away.

Further Details:

The village of Murs (a beautiful 15 minute walk) has a general store selling bread, cheese, groceries and newspapers. There is also a cafe and hotel where you can sit outside for drinks. Gordes (10 mins by car) is regarded as one of the most beautiful villages in France and is full of sophisticated restaurants as well as art galleries. shops and bars. There are several good supermarkets, including at Coustellet, Cavaillon and Avignon Sud. There is a market on somewhere local on every day of the week. Of particular interest is the Sunday market at L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, which is one of the best markets anywhere in France and famous for its antiques.

Facilities

From the Owner

Les Vallons is our home and we have chosen to decorate and furnish it to a very high spec so that it does not have the appearance of the usual rental property. The house has been beautifully designed by an Italian architect but it is clad in attractive local stone so that it has the feel of a Provencal mas. It works well as one house but can easily be adapted to house 2 families who want to holiday together. It offers complete peace and tranquility. It is in a wonderful position with fantastic views and surrounded by 9 acres of our own grounds. There is no greater stress buster than lying by the pool on a hot day or lingering over a long lunch with a glass of wine, gazing at the beautiful Luberon hills or strolling around one of the many nearby famous local hill villages.
