About Bruce Felstead

Bruce & Christine Felstead bought the house in 2009 and undertook a large renovation to create a home we adore. Having a home in Italy was the fulfillment of a dream and we are delighted to share it with those that share our love and passion for all that is Italian. The restoration involved working with local architects to create a home with rustic charm and many of today's modern comforts - a perfect home away from home.

Bruce Felstead purchased this house in 2009

Why Bruce Felstead chose Spina

After searching a few areas in Italy, we settled on Umbria because of its spectacular beauty and the numerous festivities and cultural events of nearby towns. One is never far from the many points of interest in Umbria, or heading off for a day’s adventure to either Rome, Florence or to the nearby Sibillini Mountains. Upon entering the house in Spina it was love at first sight – even though it required some imagination to envision what the house could become. Spina has a charm of its own with its authentic 12th century castle. You may stumble across the little cobbler's shop and see him tapping away at a pair of shoes, just as he has done for many years. We know you will be as captivated by Spina as we were.

What makes this house unique

Since enjoying local food is a favourite pastime in Italy, this location is rich with options. Several amazing restaurants are within a short drive. If you decide to eat at home, the nearby Marsciano farmers' market provides local produce and cheeses every Monday. The village of Spina provides the convenience of a grocery store and a butcher shop that offers some of the best and freshest old-world style meat choices we have ever tasted (try the homemade sausage!). And of course, you will need wine to accompany the meal - the grocery store has a selection of wines and proseco. In addition, Cantina La Spina is a short walk from the house where one can sample and purchase local wine. Right next door is a flower and gift shop owned by the most hospitable and friendliest residents of Spina.

Perfect location in a working village

  • 5 of 5

Our time at Nelle Mura Del Castello was precisely as expected according to the owner's website.

The house is spacious and convenient offering more than travellers usually require. It is beautifully maintained. We had a very comfortable 19 days making good use of all that was available. It is a little breath taking to live in the walls of an 11th century castle!

The village of Spina is perfectly located as a starting point to discover the beauties of Umbria, and there is much to enjoy. Day trips are easy to the many wonders including hilltop villages, historic towns, museums, galleries, music festivals and the islands of Lake Tresimeno.

As this is a working village, rather than a tourist destination, we felt part of the "real" Italy. The local supermarket provides all the necessities and there are many local markets within easy access.

We had a wonderfully relaxed holiday and would highly recommend it for those, like us, wishing to absorb the Umbrian landscape, wine and food.

Brilliant Location

  • 5 of 5

Spina is a lovely little, medieval hill top town in Umbria. Walk to grocery store and a restaurant with the best pizza we've ever had. The apartment is nicely converted and well maintained with all modern conveniences. Everything was as advertised. Last evening, sitting on the terrace, overlooking the park while listening to the Spina Philharmonic................. outstanding!

Felt like truly living as a local!

  • 5 of 5

We were happily surprised at what an easy access it was to Roma - which is where we flew in and out of.

The town of Spina is tiny and you totally feel like you are in authentic Italy, not a touristy stop. So when you're there, you are really living the lifestyle. There is a great little grocery store, butcher, florist, a little bar, pizza joint and that's all you really need.

The countryside is picture perfect postcard - with farmland, fields of poppies, and rolling hills.

Location is a great central home base for touring the Umbria region. We did numerous day trips to places like Perugia, which is a really big town. And Assisi (that was a fabulous one - huge number of tourists though so nice to go back to a quiet little village). We even did a day trip to Tuscany for a hot air balloon ride! The big lake Tresimino in Umbria is a nice day trip too.

There are easy trips for dinner in neighbouring villages - or incredible Pizza at Rendezvous actually in Spina. There is a park across the street to have a nice picnic too!

The actual house in the castle is awesome. The owners are from Canada and completely gutted and renovated the kitchen and bathrooms beautifully -and with North American expectations - high end finishes, and each bedroom with own spacious ensuite. It is a marvelous mix of old school too - like the 2 foot thick walls with shutters on the windows and gorgeous views. The walls make for natural cool air conditioning in the hot months, and I can imagine great insulation for the cooler weather. The main floor is open concept with a true chef's fully equipped kitchen with stainless appliances, gas range, dishwasher etc. It overlooks the dining area -great for big meals. Walk out to the front terrace for coffee/breakfast, cocktail hour, or quiet reading.

The 2nd floor big living area is comfortably and stylishly decorated with another fireplace, plus there is a studio bedroom and the wood floored yoga room - very zen with view.

One of our favourite memories is exploring inside the castle passages in the evening, it is romantically lit, with cobblestone paths that take you back in time.

We highly recommend it! Enjoy your stay.

Car: necessary

Umbria is land locked and has no coast however, there are 'beach resorts' on nearby Lake Trasimeno, Italy's fourth largest lake. Just 30 minutes away the lake and its beaches provide a variety of water sports including fishing, windsurfing, sailing, and volleyball. Five ferries ply its 128 calm waters, offering both access to Trasimeno’s isolated islands and stunning views of the surrounding Tuscan/Umbrian countryside. The Adriatic and Mediterranean coasts are approx 2 hours drive.

Nearest airport is at San Egidio, Perugia - Ryanair from London Stansted. Rome Ciampino, Ancona and Pisa with low-cost flights are about 2 hours drive. Rome Fiumicino for long distance flights is 2.5 hours drive.

Spina has a bar, grocery store, butcher, bank, post office, and pharmacy within 100m of the house. Full range of shops in nearby Marsciano, a 15 minute drive. Perugia (Umbria's capital) and Assisi are each a 20 minute drive and can be seen from upper floor windows. Sample of destinations within 30 minutes include: Todi, Montefalco, Lago Trasimeno, Spello and Deruta (the ceramic centre of Italy). Within 1 hour: Orvieto, Gubbio, Montepulciano, Spoleto and within 2 hours: Florence and Rome

Further Details:

Nelle Mura del Castello is ideally located for exploring Umbria and neighbouring regions. It is close to the centre of Umbria and within 20 mins of the E45, the main superstrada running the length of Umbria, north to Florence and south to Rome. We provide a few basic provisions to start you off. Just a few metres away is a foodstore, a bar, bank, post office, etc. A full range of shops, restaurants and services can be found in the market town of Marsciano, a 15 minute drive away. Several excellent restaurants, some with swimming pools, are only 5-10 minutes away by car and there are two public swimming pools within 15 minutes drive. Within 15 to 45 minutes driving: Lake Trasimeno (fourth largest lake in Italy), Spoleto (Two World Festivals and famous ancient aqueduct), Deruta (home of Majolica ceramics), Bevagna ('Gaite' Ancient Crafts Fair), Todi (Antiques Fair), Assisi (St. Francis), Orvieto (Cathedral), Spello ('Infiorata', the festival of flower decoration), Montefalco (famous for its textiles and wine), Perugia (fabulous history and architecture, great Chocolate Festival, centre of Umbria Jazz festival), Marsciano (local market town with many facilities) is just 15 minutes away. Within 90 minutes driving: Gubbio (The Ceri Race and Roman amphitheatre), Marmore Falls, Amelia, Montepulciano, Cortona and Arezzo.
