Overview

About the property

Cottage in Le Veniec, near Crozon, Finistere, Brittany - Beaches, Island, Caves, Ruined Fort, Long Distance Coast Footpath, Dogs And Kids Paradise

Ty Nevez is only a few miles from the western tip of the Crozon Peninsular (Presqu'ile du Crozon) in Finistere, and is almost as far west as its possible to go in France. It overlooks the Bay of Dournanez and is within easy walking distance of a truly exceptional coastline - a perfect spot for anyone wanting a traditional seaside holiday, or with a passion for outdoor activities, watersports, or wildlife.

The biggest beach, the Plage D'Aber is backed by a dune complex, salt marshes and a river estuary that's a habitat for many bird species, especially heron and little egret. In Summer, the dunes are alive with skylarks and full of wild flowers, including at least 5 varieties of European orchid. Two other beaches can be accessed via the coastal path and cliff stairs - we also have our own island complete with pirate caves and a ruined fort! All the beaches offer safe swimming.

The house is part of the hamlet of Le Veniec. It accommodates 6 with ease and 8 at a squeeze. All rooms have either en suite shower and toilet or in the case of the family suite, shared access to shower and toilet. The open plan kitchen / dining / sitting room is comfortable and spacious with a well equipped kitchen, wood burner etc. It opens via two sets of French windows directly into a very private garden that provides a safe secluded outdoor space to relax, eat and for kids to play. It's been renovated using natural materials including soft lime renders, wooden floors, hand built kitchen, stair cases etc. Rooms are simple but comfortably furnished.

We welcome pets and children.

About Tim Bastable

We live between France and the UK but the house here is our main residence. My wife is a midwife and I am a writer and photographer. We let the house in the summer because it's the time of year when our UK commitments are at a peak. It's not a situation that will continue indefinitely so enjoy it while the chance is there!

Tim Bastable purchased this cottage in 2004

Why Tim Bastable chose Chateaulin area

We bought this property because we have a long standing love affair with the sea and places on the edge - and the presq'ile is definitely on the edge! Its not a chocolate box cottage and it's not in a chocolate box village - Finstaire is more Irish or Scottish crofting than rose clad cottage - but a minute's walk and the view will take away your breath - and keep on taking it away for as long as you are there.

If you come and stay we hope you will love this place as much as we do.

What makes this cottage unique

The house itself is a really pleasant place to be - its very simply furnished, has lots of character, easy to keep organised and a pleasure to cook in. We hope it feels welcoming and will put people at their ease.

There are very few properties available to rent in the immediate area and the Presquile du Crozon is an exceptional part of France - the beaches are very safe, and really feel a bit like the sort of place where a Swallows and Amazons adventure should happen, complete with secret beaches, walk through sea caves, ruined fort and scary cliff paths - one friend who stayed there only spent half their holiday budget because their kids didn't want to go anywhere else!

Lovely interesting house

  • 4 of 5

This was a real home from home, food supplies left as long as you replace any that you finish, interesting structure to the house with two separate stairways, nice private garden full of lovely flowers and young sparrows when we were there. The owner was helpful by email and a real no problem place. The electrics are due for updating, but pressing the trip switch every now and then was not a problem and the library of books says a lot about the owner.

A short walk or drive takes you down to the lovely empty beach and the little island nearby is very interesting. There is a lake near the approach road with lots of birds.

I very much enjoyed the croissants from the local village, we particularly liked visiting Morgat, the cave boat trip is well worth the cost.

All in all a lovely peaceful place, and we are likely to re-book in the future

Special interest holidays:

We can organise mini breaks for small groups (4 minimum) We run courses for beginner and intermediate SLR photographers wanting to develop the full potential of their cameras, wild winter walks and spring time wild flower walks. Contact us for further details.

Coast/Beach:

there are almost 3 miles of beautiful coastline within easy walking distance of the house - the nearest beach is only 600 yards away. They range from the Plage du Poul, access via a steep flight of steps, empty even in peak season, to the renowned Plage d'Aber - accessible on foot at most states of the tide and by a 5 minute car ride if you want to avoid fording the river. As well as safe swimming we have caves, rock pools, cliffs, a fort, an island, dunes, mudflats, saltmarsh and a whirlpool!

Travel:

Nearest airport is Brest (60km) Best access is via Brittany Ferries Roscoff (60mile) and St Malo (150 mile) Calais is 460 miles away. Train from London the Quimper is about 8 hours - car hire facilities at the station.

Car is more or less essential unless you are a super fit keen cyclist (the hills are very steep in places!).

Distances:

Quimper and Brest (60km) are the nearest big cities. Most places on the presquile are at the most 20 minutes drive away. Crozon (5km) has a really good farmers market and fisherman's market every day bar Monday, several excellent supermarkets and all the general shopping facilities/post office and banks you will need.

Nearby towns of Morgat and Camaret have many cafes and restaurants and free summer time street shows

Further Details:

As a family holiday destination it's hard to beat - with accessible, safe, sheltered beaches just a short walk away - there's a collection of beach equipment to use, including a small sea kayak - and there are caves and castles to explore.

The presquile is a perfect spot for water sports enthusiasts - the Atlantic beaches are popular with surfers and the plage d'aber is a favourite spot for wind and kite surfers. Clear waters make it a good place for divers (wet suit needed!) and there are kayaks and sailing boats available for hire in nearby Morgat. There are boat trips to explore the sea caves and the Rade du Brest, sea fishing trips and a ferry across to Brest directly to Oceanopolis and the French National Naval museum. For full details of the local area visit our website.

Spring time turns the cliffs into a wild flower garden with some fields purple with orchids, and the dunes alive with skylarks on the rise - it's a fantastic place for photography and its a fantastic place for anyone with an interest in military history - with many sites, some dating back to the 17th century, a rash of Napoleonic batteries and forts and the decaying remnants of the German occupation.
