Four Peaceful Houses In Bandol Wine Area, 15 minutes from seaside. - Les Lavendres (Sleeps 4/6. 2 Bedrooms)

Updated: 30-Sep-2016
Houses in Le Beausset, Bandol, Var, Provence Alpes Cotes D'Azur, France - Secluded Houses Near Le Beausset, With Central Pool, Set In Beautiful Terraced And Wooded Landscape

La Daby is a magical, tranquil, and fun place to have a holiday. The houses can be rented separately, as they have their own terraces and privacy surrounded by pine trees; or rented together. This works well if you are a group of families or friends. You benefit from being together by the pool and for delicious meals at each others’ houses, while also having your own space. Each house has all the modcons, with a dishwasher in each, so meals looking over the surrounding landscape, are a pleasure. With heating and open fires, la Daby welcomes guests all year round. The seclusion and serenity is great for couples wanting a romantic getaway in La Tour, or a family needing a blue-sky Easter break. Bandol has the best wine in the region and is only 10 km away, offering beaches, night life, fun for kids, and delicious sea food. Hiking, riding, climbing, playing tennis - or golf at the beautiful le Frigate - all close by, and there is some of the best climbing in southern Europe.

Details for holiday cottage Les Lavendres (Sleeps 4/6. 2 Bedrooms), 2 Bedrooms, Sleeps 6, 1 Bathroom

Les lavandes (sleeps 4/6. 2 bedrooms). This is the central house, closest to the pool. It is the perfect family accommodation especially for people with teenage children, as the cabanon can be let with Les Lavandes as an extra bedroom, giving older children a certain independence. It is set amongst terraces of olive trees, rosemary and thyme, with the pool as a central meeting place. Les Lavendres is comfortable without pretension, well equipped with dishwasher, washing machine and WIFI. When all the houses are being used together, people often eat and meet here. It has a bedroom with a large double bed. In the living room, there are two built-in sofa beds on either side of the fireplace, which are used during the day as sofas, and as beds in summer when living is outside. The terrace, with its shady pergola, has a lovely view south toward the village. Like all the houses every window has mosquito netting for summer time. There is wifi throughout the property.

About the Owner

This is our family holiday home and we love it here. It belongs to four Burrills: Rebecca – a drama teacher who has two teenage children, Jemima – an artist – with two small daughters, Joshua – a radiologist, and Tabitha – a film production accountant who has one baby daughter. Santa – the Mum and the manager - is an architect and coach. We all work with a lovely local team who help look after our wonderful place.

Rustic french cottage in stunning forest location

  • 5 of 5

This place is amazing! Five acres of forest with five dwellings/ gites dotted about, with a beautiful pool, surrounded by cyprus trees and a very gorgeous mulberry tree which provided daily pickings! Apparently the owners’ parents bought the land 40 years ago (mum was an architect) and over time designed and built a house for each of their children. They have created somewhere truly special and we feel lucky to have experienced it. We have had such a wonderful holiday here. My husband and I arrived with two small children, feeling very stressed; and leave feeling relaxed and happy with so many wonderful memories…. opening the shutters each morning to beautiful sunshine and stunning forest views; early morning swims with the sun peeping through the trees; gorgeous family mealtimes at the large outdoor table with far too much (delicious) rose, the kids off exploring in the forest, happy and free. Les Lavendes is a one bed cottage but cleverly designed so that you can use the living room as a second bedroom; and you can still get to the main bedroom, bathroom and kitchen without disturbing sleeping children in the lounge. The gites are rustic French (delightfully so)… quite basic but very comfortable, with lovely art on the walls, and everything you need. Being in the middle of the forest you have to be ok with the odd creepy crawly but this certainly wasn’t a problem for us. The lovely town of Le Beausset is just a couple of minutes away in the car with a typical French town square and great market. There are also some lovely beaches nearby. We definitely want to return and would possibly look to come back with friends or family and rent Laurier and Cabanon as well as Lavendes.

Peaceful Paradise

  • 4 of 5

We have visited this wonderful property a few times and have never been disappointed. Although, the accommodation is not grand, it has everything you need and is always spotless. The setting is beautiful and secluded with terraced olive groves and a pine surrounded pool. We didn't really want to venture far but loved the busy seaside town of Bandol with all it's Bars and shops and there are plenty of beaches to choose from and a friend had told us about the market in Toulon which was amazing and very good value. We ate like kings and the local Rose is cheap and delicious. We would highly recommend this property, it had everything that Provence offers and we really did not want to leave!

Cosy house and beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed staying at Les Lavandes so much we stayed once in the summer and again in the late autumn. Les Lavandes is one of a small number of cottages surrounded by lovely terraced woodland and sharing a good-sized pool. The interior is cosy, comfortable and has some nice extras like a bidet and well-placed mirrors. Note there is no TV but we did not miss it because we had our laptops and Netflix etc. Les Lavandes has a south-facing patio and is the closest of cottages to the pool. But another great benefit is that Le Beausset is within very easy reach of the coast so we made regular trips to Bandol and Cassis when we fancied some seafood and shopping. We have visited the South of France for many years and have tended to stay inland because we could not get the comfort near the sea at the price we were prepared to pay. Les Lavandes is the perfect compromise-rural, affordable yet not far from the coast. We really liked it and will probably stay there a third time.

From the Owner

Nearly forty years ago, we decided to find a place abroad – in France because of the food, wine, language and proximity. We decided on the 'Midi' because of the weather; and the Bandol area as it is near the sea and an airport, has wonderful countryside, nice people and the best rose anywhere. We found our exceptional 5 acres of land, and built a house for each of our children, with a pool in the middle. As an architect, I used the local way of designing buildings with tiled roofs, stucco walls and shuttered windows. All school holidays were spent there, and whether using the houses together, or separately, it works amazingly well, providing togetherness and space to breathe. Being able to breakfast apart, is something we never stop appreciating!

The nearest sandy beach is at the delightful Les Lecques, just 15 mins drive away. In winter, you can kite-surf or sail, or - for the less adventurous - just stroll down the promenade and find a local ice-cream, or enjoy a seafood or moules mariniere. In summer there is comfortable sunbathing, and pedalos to swim off into the clear turquoise sea. Bandol with more sandy beaches is the same distance away, offering bars, shopping, a casino and top restaurants. Their are wonderful costal walks too.

Further Details:

In the village, there are two great butchers opposite each other on Rue Portalis. The Markets on Friday and Sunday sell local produce, olives, cheese, salami, meat and honey. Both the Casino and Carrefour are good supermarkets, and our favourite Boulangerie is Nicot on the R8 just on the way to La Daby from the village. The rest - L'Esperence – in Bandol, provides really exceptional food for a special occasion, with Le Grange in Bandol providing great steak and chips. For an evening out, both the hill top villages La Cadiere and Le Castellet are beautiful with amazing views to the sea, and classy restaurants. The Creperie at Le Castellet is particularly good for an evening meal with children, and serves the best breton cider. A change from sandy beaches, Port d'Alon is in a National Park with large pines dipping down to the sea. It is part of a coast walk from Bandol to Les Lecques. A pebbly beach with crystal clear water and white rocks for diving from, and a perfect cafe for lunch or an evening Kir. Again 15 minutes away. Worth visiting are Toulon for its maritime feel, its Couscous, and amazing daily fruit and vegetable market. Go to Marseille for Bouillabesse at chez Fon Fon, and the formidable L'Habitation designed by Le Corbusier. The jewel of the coast is les Calanques de Cassis. Jump on a boat from Bandol or Cassis and experience the clearest turquoise sea, with white cliffs dropping into the water. Only the most experience climbers attempt these cliffs, but there is good climbing five minutes drive from La Daby at Simai, St Anne D'Evenos. All year round cultural activities include the opera in Toulon, international exhibitions at Villa Noailles, Hyeres and local festivals. Aix in Provence in half an hour away, with the historic towns of Avignon, Arles and Nimes being around two hours.

From the Owner

The summers were full of excitement with dances almost every night in one of the local villages, and endless different events including St Eloi, Provencal dancing in the village square, and artisanal markets in the evenings at Bandol. We spend our days sailing, windsurfing, digging sand castles on the sandy beach, rock climbing at Port d'Alon; or just jumping in and out of the pool all day. The joy of winter is being outside, with bright blue sky and lunch outside with a BBQ. Whether making bonfires, or watching fireworks at Sanary, there is always fun to be had in some form. In the Spring wild flowers across the ancient terraces, dotted with olive trees, make it an ideal retreat at this time of year. The food is fabulous: wood fired pizza, fish, cheese, and the best apricots and figs.

  • Notes on accommodation: Houses are let together or separately. All the houses work well for any combination of people. A couple in the tower with a baby in a cot (we provide cots) works well, and equally so for a couple in Les Lavendres who want to be closer to the pool. As meals are eaten on the terraces during the summer, using the sitting room as an extra bedroom works very well. The houses are clean and easy to use, and in the summer the pool becomes the focal point with poolside sunbathing - soaking up the rays, hammocks for relaxing in the shade, or table tennis to play. Meals on the terraces outside the houses are always a pleasure, with excellent local ingredients, and rosemary, thyme, oregano and juniper growing at your fingertips. Keep the shutters closed during the day, and the houses are a delightful respite from the heat in full summer. Have a siesta sprawled out on cool cotton sheets, or browse the excellent collection of books in the bookshelves. There is a net work of wifi throughout the land. Outside: This is the most idyllic piece of land. Five acres of thyme and rosemary covered terraces, with pines and olive trees acting as shade. The terraces are more than 1000 years old and were built for growing vines and cultivating olive trees. The private and secluded pool is 10m x 5m in size with a surrounding unobtrusive fence for maximum safety when children are staying. It has comfortable mattresses surrounding it, with a table and parasol. The nearby Cabanon provides a lavatory and outside shower shaded by a fig tree. The ping-pong table is on the terrace below the pool, shaded by an ancient olive tree. Numerous hammocks are dotted all around the Terrain, and all houses have an outside table and chairs for eating al fresco. Les Lavandes has a gas griddle which can work at any of the houses. This is a wild and wonderful wilderness with all manner of flowers, insects and fauna. Watch out for beautiful and rare orchids in spring and butterflies and dragonflies that crop up everywhere.
