About the property

Holiday Home in Appledore, Devon, England - Peaceful Location Within Walking Distance Of N Devon Golf Course And Surfing Beach With Lifeguards

Pretty painted fishermans cottage sitting on water's edge close to 'the little white town' of Bideford. The cottage sleeps 6 and is tastefully decorated with a very light and nautical theme. You will wake to the sound of gulls and lapping water if the tide is in. It is convenient for Clovelly, Croyde and Woolacombe. The cottage is well equipped and has everything from picnic set to loungers and outdoor dining on the sheltered balcony overlooking the estuary. Here you can relax and watch the fishing and sailing boats go by. Surfing lessons and wetsuit hire are available from N Devon surf school at the nearby surfing beach. There is a sailing club and watersports at nearby Instow (on the other side of the estuary), and golf within walking distance. Appledore is a working fishing village with many restaurants and pubs serving good seafood. There is a ferry service from nearby Bideford (depending on tides) to Lundy Island with its puffins. Or your can hire a bicycle and follow the Tarka trail.

About Susan McCabe

I have two sons and two beautiful grandchildren, Bella and Will. We all love visits to appledore, as does my lovely dog Hattie. We visit as often as possible, whenever work allows. I have a busy soft furnishings shop in Suffok, so look forward to the peace and tranquility of the cottage with its ever changing views across the water.

Why Susan McCabe chose North Devon

The cottage is located on the waters edge and has an ever changing view across the estuary. It's situated on the picturesque north Devon coast, in an area of outstanding natural beauty. It's perfectly placed for visiting Croyde, woolacombe, Lynton and clovelly.

Notes on accommodation: Waters Edge was formerly a fisherman's cottage which has been tastefully renovated and modernised to provide light and comfortable accommodation. The cottage is painted white under a slate roof with a pretty blue stable door. Inside, the ground floor is slate with white walls and fresh and pretty fabrics at the windows. All bedrooms and the bathroom are on the ground floor. The bedrooms all have estuary views. The stairs are carpeted in a contemporary stripe and upstairs is a relaxing, light open plan room with vaulted ceiling. This room has another stable door which leads out onto the large balcony where there is a table and seating for six people as well as two recliners. Inside there are 2 light and comfortable sofas, and luxurious interlined curtains in a jaunty stripe. There is Sky tv and a DVD player with plenty of DVDs. There are also board games and books of local interest. The views over the estuary are stunning. At night the lights twinkle across the water at Instow. Magical. Outside: There is no garden at the property. However, there is a large balcony which is equipped with a table and seating for 6. There are 2 hardwood reclining chairs which have comfortable seat pads. There are some palms and patio pots on the balcony. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Christine, the housekeeper will make sure that the cottage is spotlessly clean on your arrival. There will be crisp cotton bedding and fluffy towels waiting for you, as well as a welcome pack. It is cleaned weekly. Other: Entrance hallway with stable door and slate flooring.

What a little gem. Spent a very relaxing week in this lovely, well presented cottage. It smelt clean and fresh when we opened the front door and everything inside was spotless. Spent most of our time on the balcony looking out on the estuary there was always something to see. Minutes away from the shops, cafes and pubs. Appledore, the people and the weather perfect couldn't have asked for more. We got a visitors parking permit online from Torridge District Council, it was only £20 for the week, well worth it. Can't wait to go back.

Fishermans Cottage/Appledore - a fabulous holiday!

  • 5 of 5

Having never been in Devon before, we think we landed very lucky choosing both Appledore as our base and this beautiful, tastefully furnished cottage to stay in. They were both really lovely and we enjoyed our holiday enormously.

As well as exploring Appledore (lots of lovely shops, restaurants, pubs and a lovely cream tea – oh and we enjoyed the locals who were lovely as well as the pub quiz in the Beaver Inn), we particularly enjoyed day trips to Tintagel Castle‎ (to see King Arthur) very fascinating and as our first foray into Cornwall we had Cornish pasties for lunch - yum); Boscastle (beautifully restored after flooding); Bude (2 beautiful beaches, a game of tennis, a meander around the shops and a Devon pasty - yum) and Ilfracombe (lovely sea cliff walk around an interesting seaside town and bizarre (but glad we saw it) Damien Hirst statue called Verity). We also had an unexpectedly long walk along the coast (6.5 hours!) to Clovelly which is a beautiful and quaint old fishing village. In retrospect driving a bit closer for a walk would have been better but that was a miscalculation on our part! All in all we had a fabulous holiday and we would love to visit the area again. This cottage and the location are highly recommended. Thank you.

The nearest beach is between Westward Ho! and Northam burrows. It is about 3 to 4 miles by car or you can walk along the coastal path in approx 30 mins. It is two miles long, with coastguards in the summer and is popular for surfing and bodyboarding. The N Devon surf school offer lessons and hire of wetsuits. There is a unique pebble ridge, behind which are the Northam burrows where ponies and sheep graze. There is also a beach and sand dunes across the estuary at Instow approx 10 mins by car.

A car is essential. The nearest airports are Exeter or Newquay both of which are approx one hour by car.

Bideford is the nearest town, approx 3 miles with supermarkets, etc. Clovelly is a popular tourist destination and is approx 8 miles away. Croyde, Ilfracombe, Woolacombe, Lynton and Lynmouth are all within range, within 30 minutes drive. The National Trust gardens of Rosemoor are approx 15 mins by car.

Further Details:

You can find supermarkets, Morrisons and Asda in Bideford. Appledore has many good independent shops including a newsagent, specialist chocolate shop and post office with deli and bakery. There are two good restaurants and tea shops, as well as art galleries. There are many more shops, banks in nearby Bideford.
