About Joe Ellis

I'm 55 years old and live in Yorkshire with my husband Geoff and our Chocolate labrador called Coco who we adore. We have 5 holiday properties all next to each other which can be rented separately or all together. Our original property, the Piggery was built in 1821 and has been painstakingly renovated. Our other cottages and retreats are now 4 years old and proved to be a labour of love, hard work and sheer determination. We have exceptionally high standards which shows in the quality of interiors and the cleanliness. The comfort and enjoyment of our guests are our main concern - our guest comments are proof of this. These are really very special properties - ideal for friends and family to escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The icing on the cake are the stunning views from all properties over the Eskdale Valley.

Joe Ellis purchased this cottage in 2010

Why Joe Ellis chose Yorkshire Moors and Coast

Our property have been built in the orchard of our cottage - the Piggery which is next door and are built into the hillside to maximise the wonderful views from all windows of the Esk Valley and the North Yorkshire Moors.

What makes this cottage unique

The cottage has the benefit of being set in a village location, which is in wonderful countryside yet only 3 miles from long golden sandy beaches of Sandsend and Whitby. On your doorstep you have a lovely local bakers, award winning butchers and deli, tea rooms, restaurants and 2 pubs which are within easy walking distance of the cottages and retreats. The setting is peaceful, yet only a stones throw from everywhere you would like to visit.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Our first thought when we arrived at Cowslip Retreat was WOW! Want to stay in this piece of heaven forever. Fantastic view, the retreat is fabulous !! You have thought of everything. Thank you for the welcome hamper, we felt special from the start ! Haven't slept so soundly for ages, comfortable bed and lots of walking may have been the reason. It's been a fabulous few days, so sad we can't stay longer, but we'll be back. Love all the touches in the retreat - art work beautiful, binoculars, (used many times), JUST PERFECT !! Thank you so much

What a find

  • 5 of 5

Last minute escape for the weekend and we could not have asked for more. The property was spotlessly clean, with everything thought of. Highly recommend. The walks right from the doorstep were fantastic and a local pub right at the end of the road was a real bonus if you didn't fancy venturing the short distance into whitby
