About Wendy or Martin

We are Wendy and Martin Stannage. We moved to France in 2008 after selling our business in the UK. We have 3 children, Natalie aged 18, George aged 15 and Alice aged 9, all now settled in local schools. After spending many years on holiday in France we felt that we wanted to provide our children with the opportunity to experience a different lifestyle. We had already bought a holiday home in Montreal, Aude, before we moved here so our decision and the process was pretty straight forward. Since being here we have found our perfect family home, in the same village, which has now been completely renovated.

Wendy or Martin purchased this house in 2006

Why Wendy or Martin chose Carcassonne surroundings

We picked the Aude, and Montreal in particular as it offered everything that we felt our family wanted. This included a large choice of amenities for the children, eg swimming pools, tennis courts, parks, fishing lake, library, and lots of clubs for the children.

The village isn't huge but with around 2000 inhabitants it is certainly better equipped than the smaller villages around. It still has a lovely village feel, saying 'bonjour' to most people you meet & always seeing a friendly face when out on a walk.

Montreal is very well served by the local Carcassonne airport (10 minutes away) with Ryanair flights to various UK and European airports. It is also very straight forward to get flights from Toulouse, Beziers, Perpignan, Montpellier & even Girona (Spain).

What makes this house unique

Montreal is very well equipped for both residents and holiday makers. In the village there are 2 bakers, a butcher, pharmacy, 2 general stores, restaurants, a bar, beauticians, garage, library, doctors, dentist, tourist information and a Credit Agricole Bank with a cash point.

There is a fantastic outdoor swimming pool complex in the village which is open during July and August and is an easy, short walk from the house. You can also benefit from the tennis courts, a fishing lake, a small park for the younger children with plenty of local walks or cycle rides around the village or along the Canal du Midi.

Perfect place for travelling to and from

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay and the property was very clean and comfortable. Set in a typically French village. Wendy and Martin were very helpful, and gave us some good advice on where to visit. Great house for a family retreat after a day at the beach or sightseeing. Would recommend to anyone.

Super Accommodation

  • 5 of 5

The description of this property although accurate, does not do justice to the reality. A VERY comfortable and spacious house; very well maintained and clean; all furnishings and kitchenware of a good standard.

Martin and Wendy provided a very hospitable welcome and were quick to answer email enquiries before our arrival.

Montréal is a typical hilltop medieval village with narrow streets. Although a parking area is just a few metres from the property, we chose to park the car near the fountain at the bottom of the street in a much larger car park.

The village provided all basic shopping but bars and restaurant were in short supply.

We would thoroughly recommend the property as an excellent base for touring the area.

Fantastic house

  • 5 of 5

We had a great holiday in this lovely house.we were greeted by Martin on arrival who showed us all we needed to know about the house and beyond. The house is very comfortable and the living area is very spacious and airy.We had lots of meals on the sunny terrace and the electric sun shade was fantastic when it got to hot.The house has an abundance of toys that our boys age 5 and 8 were delighted to play with.Montreal and the surrounding area is stunning and there is a lot to do on offer.I can't recommend enough !we will defiantly be back.thankyou

A most enjoyable week!

  • 5 of 5

We spent a most enjoyable week here last June. The accommodation is excellent, the kitchen and bathroom very well equipped, and the air-conditioning in the main bedroom enabled us – during a very hot week – to sleep very comfortably. All other rooms are cool in summer. The house is well located in a quiet side street, with parking spaces just a few metres from the front door, and is an excellent base for sightseeing, only twenty minutes by car to Carcassonne. We would definitely stay here again and thoroughly recommend it to both couples and families.

Excellent holiday cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely week in this cottage. Very helpful owners, who left us milk and bubbly in the fridge on arrival, plus tea/coffee. Plenty of space, a well-equipped house, very hot sunny terrace and small garden, air-con available in the upstairs room (which is the only one that needed it), great views of the mountains, very quiet neighbours, TV, DVDs and loads of toys for kids. On-street parking was always available somewhere close, even if not in the same (narrow) street. Montreal is a big village with plenty of facilities (bakers, shops, restaurants, a huge medieval church all painted inside, squares and fountains), very close to Carcassonne and the Canal du Midi but an easy drive to the Cathar castles, caves and fantastic prehistoric park at Tarascon, canoeing/rafting on mountain rivers, etc. And easy motorway to Beziers or Toulouse airports. A great place to stay.

Special interest holidays:

There is so much to do and look at around the Languedoc Rousillion region it would take a book to cover it. In fact there is a Thomas Cook book called 'Drive Around Languedoc & Southwest France' which I would recommend anyone to read prior to taking a holiday here as it gives a great insight. We leave a copy of this book in the house for any visitor to read.

Just to give a quick overview of the sort of things you may want to see -

Carcassonne Cité (World Heritage site), Canal du Midi, more vinyards than you've ever seen, Castles, Cathedrals, local markets, Narbonne Beach, wildlife parks at Carcassonne and Sigean, Toulouse Space Centre, Dinosaur Museum, Bandas (music) Festival, Limoux Carnival, Carcassonne Music Festival, the list is endless. There is something for everyone.

There is a very nice swimming lake with a 'beach' at Carcassonne. The nearest beach is Narbonne Plage which is around 1 hour away but you can drive north or south from Narbonne & take your pick of dozens of beaches & coves along the coast. Port Leucate is very good for windsurfing while Collioure & Banyuls are charming ports.

You can fly directly into Carcassonne with Ryanair from various UK airports. They offer car hire with several leading companies. If you don't want to drive you could get a taxi from the airport or we can arrange a pick up transfer to the house.

Toulouse & Beziers are around 1 hour away, Perpignan is slighty further, Montpellier 1.5 hours, Girona is around 2 hours but does have some excellent pricing on flights.

Carcassonne town is around 15 mins, Toulouse about 50 mins, Andorra 2 hours, Barcelona 2.5 hours, Mediterranean 1 hour, Pyrenees 1 hour.
