Converted barn in Holtby, Nr. York, North Yorkshire, England - Set In The Beautiful Yorkshire Countryside, Yet Just 5 Miles From York And Its Many Attractions

The Apple Barn is just a short drive into York city centre, the perfect location for your visit to the many attractions of York and the surrounding countryside. Set in the quiet village of Holtby and sitting peacefully next to Holtby church our village is steeped in history and untouched by development, just right for a relaxing stay. The Apple Barn has one spacious double bedroom with a king size bed and flat screen TV. A good sized bathroom with over bath shower and WC. The lounge/dining area has a new large flat screen TV, along with a DVD and CD and a selection of DVDs, CD's, books and board games. For those of you that like a challenge, wooden puzzles are there to tax you. The kitchen is fully equipped with a breakfast bar. Leading from the kitchen to outside there is a large lawn garden shared with the owners and two relaxing patios areas. We also have private off street parking for one vehicles. We have our own free range hens and produce our own honey on site.

About Laura Bough

David has lived in York all his life, Laura started life in Bridlington but has lived most of her life in York. They have one Daughter Emily who is a student at Sheffield Hallam University studying Product Design. Living in Holltby has allowed them to indulge themsleves in many of their hobbies and a more natural lifestyle. They keep bees and produce local honey. Living next door to the Apple barn they are on hand to make sure your holiday is as enjoyable as possible.

Why Laura Bough chose York

We moved to Holtby in 2003 because it was a beautiful little village that was close enough to York for us to commute quickly to the city centre for David's work and Emily's school yet felt like we were in the middle of the countryside when we were at home relaxing. Our nearest pub is only 3/4 mile away in the village of Warthill and the pub next to the village duckpond.

What makes this cottage unique

Holtby village is very close to York, approximately 4.5 miles and the city has many attractions to offer. Holtby is also very close to the Howardian Hills and a short commute away from the North Yorkshire Moors, the Yorkshire Dales and the Yorkshire Coastline. If you want to escape to the country and enjoy walking or cycling then our public rights of way around Holtby will be perfect for you. The Applebarn is a comfortable cottage offering home from home facilities and provides a perfect base with off street parking for your visit to historic York and the North Yorkshire countryside.

Outside: The Apple Barn shares a large lawn garden with the owners. We also produce our own honey. There are two patios within the grounds with tables, chairs and a barbecue. There is also plenty of off street parking which is well lit during the evening. Iron and ironing board supplied and some cleaning equipment can be found under the sink. Your property is cleaned after each guest, and fresh bed linen and towels are provided for your stay.

Great location and ideal accomodation

We stayed for a long weekend and would definitely stay again when visiting York. The property was great value for money and had everything that we needed. A lovely cosy cottage. The drive in to York was simple, and the designer outlet is close by. The owners are on hand if you need them, but you feel that have your own space at the same time. Definitely recommended.

Lovely cottage had everything we needed. Perfect for 2 people. Kitchen very well equipped. Cottage clean and fresh looking. Laura the Owner very helpful and welcoming.

If you head to York park and ride over half the price of city parking. Grimston bar nearest one on yellow line.

Pretty cottage in courtyard of The Cottage , lovely Acers ,espallied Hollies. Next a small brick and stone church. Our cottage was pretty and very comfortable. Thoroughly recommended ,in a fine village .

Special interest holidays:

The Yorvic way, a 65 mile recreational path, skirts the village and there is a network of 6 separate public rights of way within the parish of Holtby, which together with bridleways and country lanes, link Holtby to neighboring villages making it an excellent area for walkers and cyclists.


York is ideally located to visit attractions, such as the North Yorkshire moors (Heartbeat country), Scarborough (40 miles), Whitby (Dracula town). Easy access to Victorian Harrogate and cosmopolitan Leeds with its superb shopping and big city experience.


Leeds Bradford airport is approx 45 minutes drive. Manchester airport is approx 90 minutes drive. York city railway station is 5 miles away in the centre of York and our regular bus takes you straight there.


Leeds is approximately 30 miles away. Harrogate is approximately 20 miles away. The east coast, Scarborough and Bridlington are 40 miles away. Castle Howard is approximately 10 miles away.

Further Details:

Holtby is a small village on a regular bus route into York or just a 5 minute drive away to the nearest Park and Ride. Our nearest village is Dunnington, which is 2 miles away and has a supermarket, post office, newsagents, butchers and a couple of pubs serving good honest food. In the other direction we have the Balloon Tree a farm shop serving delicious homemade cakes, all of their produce is locally grown and very fresh. If you need to shop further afield we have Monks Cross shopping park a ten minute drive away which has a couple of the larger supermarkets and plenty of other shops to tempt you. York's MacArthur Glen Designer Outlet is also only a short drive away. Our nearest pub is in the next village of Warthill a 3/4 mile walk away.

Booking Notes:
When you book, we ask for a booking fee in order to hold the property. This deposit is non refundable. The balance of the rental is payable four weeks before arrival. Should you find it necessary to cancel your booking within four weeks of your arrival date the payment will not be refunded unless we are able to re-let the property for the same dates.

Changeover Day:
Friday is our preferred changeover day, but out of season this can be flexible. Arrival at the cottage is after 3pm, to be agreed with the owner and we ask that you vacate the property by 10am on your day of departure.

Notes on prices:
Our prices are based on two people sharing for a one week stay. A minimum stay with us is three nights, please contact us for a price if you wish to stay between 3 and 7 nights.

Owner's Cancellation Policy

  • 50% refund for cancellations more than 7 days before check-in date.
  • 100% refund for cancellations more than 14 days before check-in date.
  • Service Fee fully refunded on cancellations that qualify for 100% refund.
