Why Laura Bough chose North Yorkshire

We moved to Holtby in 2003 because it was a beautiful little village that was close enough to York for us to commute quickly to the city centre for David's work and Emily's school yet felt like we were in the middle of the countryside when we were at home relaxing. Our nearest pub is only 3/4 mile away in the village of Warthill and the pub next to the village duckpond.

What makes this cottage unique

Holtby village is very close to York, approximately 4.5 miles and the city has many attractions to offer. Holtby is also very close to the Howardian Hills and a short commute away from the North Yorkshire Moors, the Yorkshire Dales and the Yorkshire Coastline. If you want to escape to the country and enjoy walking or cycling then our public rights of way around Holtby will be perfect for you. The Applebarn is a comfortable cottage offering home from home facilities and provides a perfect base with off street parking for your visit to historic York and the North Yorkshire countryside.

Exactly what we were looking for!

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is a delightful modern conversion which is decorated and furnished throughout in keeping with the cottage theme. The owner lives in the adjacent property and is friendly and extremely helpful. Loved every minute of our holiday and looking forward to trying the honey produced by the owners. Definitely will recommend.

Applebarn is a lovely little cottage, perfect for a stay in the York area. It is very well equipped and comfortable. The location is ideal, being in the country but only 5 miles from York with an excellent bus service both loathe local bus and the Park and Ride. Dunnington is about 30 mins walk away and has quite a few shops.

We enjoyed a super 4 night break during which we visited York and also further afield.

Stayed 5 nights at the Apple Barn and had a great time! The house is very well equipped and spotlessly clean and Laura was very friendly. Lots of books and dvds on hand, lovely outside space, off road secure parking, we were even allowed to lock our pushbikes in the shed! Nearest pub (Agar Arms) was 3/4 mile away, no pavement though so need to be vigilant! Friendly pub in nice setting. We travelled to York by bus, stop is a 5 minute walk from the house. Did Minster, The Shambles, City Walls, Jorvik and York Dungeon. Cycled along the Trans Pennine Trail to Selby, about 20 mile return journey, very pleasant. Selby is a nice town with a wonderful Abbey, well worth a visit. Drove to Keighley, about an hour away, and took the steam train to Howarth to the Bronte Parsonage museum. What a great day out, Howarth is fantastic and so nice to get there by steam train! Ate out a couple of times, the Duke of York in Gate Helmsley was very good, if a little expensive, would recommend booking as it was very busy! Best meal was in York, Biltmore Bar & Grill in Swinegate. We wandered in by chance and had a fabulous meal then found out that on Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday all food is half price so we paid £23 for 2 starters, 2 mains and drinks! Will definitely recommend the Apple Barn to others, amazing house, peaceful surroundings, lovely village and a great host.
