Appledore Village - Fisherman's Cottage with Sea Views

Updated: 30-Aug-2016
Cottage in Appledore, Nr. Bideford, North Devon, England, UK - Situated In A Quiet Street One Minute Walk From The Quayside

Our house is an old fisherman’s cottage dating back to 18th century and is located in a small quiet terrace near the quayside. The cottage has been refurbished throughout and features a pretty, enclosed courtyard. With lovely views from both bedrooms across the estuary to the sea, and a short stroll to all the amenities of this quaint fishing village - shops, pubs and restaurants 100 yds. Instow is on the opposite side of the estuary with its sandy beach, pubs and restaurants. Westward Ho!, 2 miles is famous for its wide sandy beach and surfing, plus lovely walks across the adjacent Burrows Country Park with its dunes and grazing sheep and horses. Bideford, 3 miles offers town amenities, shops, pubs, restaurants and boat trips to Lundy Island. Other attractions close by include The Big Sheep, The Milky Way, Dartington Crystal Factory, RHS Rosemoor Gardens, the Atlantic Village outlet shopping centre and the Tarka Cycle and footpath trail.

Excellent cottage

  • 4 of 5

We found the cottage cosy, warm, welcoming, comfortable and very clean. It's all excellent, but in particular the shower room was really nicely finished, with very good shower. It has an ideal location, tucked away, but so close to the quay and all the amenities Appledore has to offer, especially the Seagate, which is just around the corner and has very good food. Appledore is a charming village on the Torridge estuary, and I would strongly recomend this cottage as a place to stay. Thank you very much for letting us stay.

Immaculate cottage in great location

  • 5 of 5

Minnow Cottage is very close to the quay in Appledore and we were able to park outside to unload our car. The public car park is only a two minute walk but we found roadside spaces every day within 75 metres. The location is really convenient for a level walk to the fabulous deli, brasseries, restaurants, great chip shop and galleries. Many cottages in Appledore are tucked away up narrow, non car accessible steep lanes which would have been a disaster for my elderly mum.

The cottage is immaculate - everything from the fridge, cooker and kitchen through to bed linen and bathroom was dazzlingly spotless. It is decorated and furnished like someone's home, not a "holiday cottage".

We were there in August and had six days of perfect sun. Our party of four was me, my elderly Mum, my 13 year old daughter and her school friend. The girls had an amazing action packed couple of days at Skern Lodge Activity centre - only half a mile away, surfing, rock climbing and river kayaking. We pre booked having checked out their programme online. We spent sun soaked days on the beaches. Our favourite was Saunton Sands just up the coast near Croyde. Whilst they burned off adrenaline I took Mum to the RHS garden at Rosemoor one day and the other we explored the galleries of Appledore. One evening we bought the makings of a picnic from John's the Quay front Deli - armed with chilled Prosecco, trout pate, freshly baked bread, locally produced cheeses and a cake or two we took the community run ferry over the Estuaryt to Instow and watched the sun set. If Carlsberg made holidays they would be like this!

I unreservedly recommend this property

From the Owner

We've owned Minnow cottage for 10 years. We bought it after we fell in love with Appledore and its quirky galleries and shops, artistic flair and the music in the pubs, on one of our family holidays. It’s been a really important part of our lives to come and relax. Since the children were small we've enjoyed coming to North Devon. Minnow has been such an important place in their lives.

Activity and Interests

The cottage is located directly behind the quayside where you will find the estuary of the rivers Taw and Torridge - great for beach combing, crabbing and staring into rock pools! Westward Ho! which is 10 minutes away by car - has an excellent beach with lifeguards and good surfing. Putsborough, Saunton and Croyde are good beaches thirty or forty minutes away in the car, all with surfing. Instow also has a good sandy beach. Further a field are the beaches of North Cornwall – i.e. Sandymouth

Exeter is the nearest airport. Train: From Exeter St David’s Station take the Tarka Line to Barnstaple, then bus to Bideford and Appledore.

Coach: National Express run services to Bideford from where you can get a local bus to Appledore.

Just 10 mins drive to Bideford (with large supermarket and pannier market), 15 minutes to Barnstaple (large shops). Lots of tourist attractions nearby, including The Big Sheep 5 mins drive. Milky Way 10 mins drive. Clovelly 15 mins drive. Hartland Quay 25 mins drive.

Further Details:

John's delicatessen of Appledore is a few minutes stroll away. It has a full service Post Office inside and a good selection of groceries and fresh vegetables and fruit. Galleries in Appledore sell great products by local artists and are well worth a look around. Atlantic Village retail outlet is 10 minutes drive away with a large comprehensively stocked ASDA.

From the Owner

Our house is in a fantastic location close to the quay and the proximity of the coastal path to walk across to the Northam Burrows and the Beach at Westward Ho! We love this invigorating walk with breathtaking views! A short stroll from the cottage to Appledore quayside we enjoy the bygone village era and love to watch the fishing boats bring in their catch(crabbing at the quayside is a popular pass time with the young and old!)Our cottage is a great base from which to explore North Devon. One of our favourite things to do is to walk the Peppercombe Valley, a 10 minute drive away on the Atlantic Highway. Popular attractions in the area include The Big Sheep, The Milky Way, Watermouth Castle and Dartington Crystal.
