Sleeps 7 - 2 lounges & bathrooms; Cartmel & Grange-Over-Sands 5 minutes

The Hayloft is a 4 Star Gold Award (2017) cottage beautifully converted from a limestone threshing barn. It blends original oak beams and modern facilities with contemporary use of oak, slate and granite, all draped in Sanderson and Laura Ashley fabrics.

The living areas are open plan with an upstairs galleried lounge, gas fire and window seats for the views towards Humphrey Head & Morecambe Bay. Connected by an oak staircase to a bespoke oak kitchen and dining room with large oak table and chairs. This leads into a heated hardwood Conservatory with french doors onto the lawn. The Hayloft has gas heating, lots of hot water and is decorated as a home from home.

It sleeps 7 in 3 cosy bedrooms: a lovely ground floor antique Victorian double, a pretty upstairs double and cosy twin room, plus a lounge-based small sofa bed for 1 adult or 2 children. There is a ground-floor shower room with wide pentangle enclosure & power shower plus an upstairs bathroom with corner bath. Both have heated towel rails, lots of hot water and fluffy towels included.

The separate converted stable has a popular Games Room with table tennis, darts, drinks fridge and freezer and the Laundry Room has a washing machine, tumble drier, stone trough for cleaning pets & boots plus lots of storage for bikes & kit.

The pretty enclosed garden has parking for 2 cars, lawn, borders pergola and fountain. There is a BBQ & teak table with 6 chairs. 2 Pets Welcome!

About Carrie Tomlinson

My name is Carrie Tomlinson. I was born in Allithwaite, and spent my early years on Yew Tree Farm, when The Hayloft was used for storing hay, straw and mangols.

Why Carrie Tomlinson chose England

This 20-acre small-holding was farmed by my father and has been in my family for over 150 years! In 1999, having accepted that the barn was falling apart, my sister and I decided to convert it into cottages. As a retired Engineer, my Father became a very hands-on Project Manager, bringing in local skills when needed. When I describe that The Hayloft is a 'home from home', it is!

What makes this barn unique

The Hayloft is packed full of features as well as having all creature comforts. We used local tradesmen - some family friends - and local skills and materials giving The Hayloft some special features. The oak beams removed from the roof, were painstakingly adzed into life and put back into the ceilings. More beams were used over the windows and window seats added, stonework was rebuilt and 'owl' holes glazed in Victorian-style glass.Cumbrian greenslate was added to the ground floor public areas and the oak and iron staircase was made in the village to our own design. The windows and conservatory are all hardwood, manufactured by Knipes of Allithwaite.

Lovely property, well maintained with everything you need. A real home from home.

We stayed four nights. Because we were all adults we didn't make use of the games room which would be great if you had kids. Very thoughtfully knitted out property including spare accessories for the dogs and tea coffee and biscuits for the people. We visited family and spent time in Grange and Cartmel. Exactly what we wanted to do - chilled out and would visit again.

Allithwaite is a limestone-built village, founded in Norse times. It faces south & overlooks Morecambe Bay with views of the Lake District fells to the north. It is a working village with very friendly people, as you will find in The Pheasant Inn round the corner! The village has a Post Office, Church, Charity Shop & Play Park. The village is surrounded by walks through fields & woods & the Cumbria Coastal Way footpath is an easy walk to Humphrey Head National Nature Reserve & Morecambe Bay. The other direction leads to Grange-over-Sands, an Edwardian seaside resort with mile-long promenade, cafes, good shops and ornamental gardens. Cartmel (20 mins on foot) was voted the most picturesque village in Cumbria and is famous for its Priory, Racecourse and now Sticky Toffee Pudding. The foot of Lake Windermere is within 15 minutes and the heart of the Lake District too. Renowned Holker Hall & Gardens is 2 miles away. There is Swimming at local hotels and endless sporting facilities and opportunities.There are large supermarkets in Kendal, Ulverston and Barrow that all deliver to the house.

Lake Windermere is found within 15 minutes along with the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway, Lakes Aquarium, & steamer rides to Bowness-on-Windermere & Ambleside. The Lake District's many attractions are easily access & guests love that they come back to a comfortable cottage at the end of the day.

The balance is payable 6 weeks before your Holiday Start Date. A letter of confirmation is sent along with the deposit, once funds have cleared, and after the final balance payment has cleared. On receipt of the final payment, the Arrival Instructions are sent.

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: The Hayloft has been awarded 4 stars by VisitEngland. It has received a Gold Award for the 7th year, and all furnishings and equipment are kept up-to-date and clean. Repeat bookings are high as visitors say that it offers luxury yet value for money, as it is on the periphery of the Lake District National Park. Yet Lake Windermere is less than 10 minutes by car! Guests say the Cartmel Peninsula is a fantastic location as it is quieter, scenically beautiful with great restaurants and shops. Look at our visitor comments on The Hayloft website. The Owner welcomes 2 pets, which are currently included in the price, and is has been commented on that you rarely see pets welcomed to such a beautiful house! Outside: The Hayloft has a good sized, fully-enclosed garden. There are lots of paved areas, which can also accommodate 2 cars. One of the paved areas has teak furniture and cushions, and two luxury padded recliners for sunny weather. There are two stone seats in the garden, one under a pergola with Wisteria and the other between borders. There is a lawn and a lion's head fountain, completely safe as the water goes into a pebble pool. The Games and Laundry Rooms are in a converted limestone stable in the garden, next to the cottage. Utility Room: The Laundry Room has a washing machine, tumble dryer and a large trough for dog and boot washing and lots of space. Next door in the Games Room there is a drinks fridge and a freezer. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Bed linen and towels are included. The cottage has received a VisitEngland 4 star grading plus a Gold Award for 2016 for high standards of accommodation facilities and presentation. Complimentary linen change for 2-week lets. Other: The centrally-heated Oak Conservatory has a cane sofa and John Lewis Snuggle seat, rocking chair, TV with Freeview, DVD and well-stocked bookcase. A Games Room features full-sized table tennis table, table football , darts.
