About Marie Woods

We live and work mainly in London but have many connections to Aegina, and love to visit whenever we can.

Marie Woods purchased this house in 2000

Why Marie Woods chose Attica

The island is lively throughout the year and has a great tradition of artistic and cultural life. There is a classical music festival in the summer. It is long established as a working community, with olive and pistachio harvests. There are wonderful walks and tavernas. The people are friendly and not overstretched by tourism.

What makes this house unique

We aimed to create a house with space and elegance. It has a meditative air with many quiet corners, and yet is close to all the amenities and pleasures of a Greek island

Activity and Interests

Coast/Beach:

The sea is 20 metres to the front of the property. It is possible to swim from there if you wear plastic shoes to protect your feet from the rocks which can be sharp. There are sandy beaches to the right and left within 20 minutes walk. There are many other places to swim on the island (shingle, pebble, sand and flat rocks) just a short drive away. The small island of Aggistri has a cresent shaped sandy beach and a pebble beach frequented by nudists.

Travel:

The nearest airport is Athens. To get to Aegina, you need to get a bus, taxi or underground to Piraeus which is Athens main port. From there, there are usually hourly boats to Aegina. The hydrofoil takes 3/4 hour, the ferry 1 1/4 - 1 1/2 hours. A taxi or the local free bus can get you to the house in minutes. It takes 20minutes to walk. Although it is quite possible to manage without a car, and to use buses and the occasional taxi to explore the island, a car gives you greater flexibility.

Distances:

The lively port of Aegina, with its famous fish market, smart shops and bars, tavernas, churches and the ancient site of Colonna is just 20 minutes walk from the house. The beautiful temple of Aphaia, the magical abandoned village of Paleochora and picturesque fishing village of Perdika are all within 20 minutes drive. Athens with its abundance of sites and museums and Epidavros with its amphitheatre staging performances throughout the summer are easy day trips.

Further Details:

The island's main supermarket is 20 minutes walk away on this side of Aegina port. There are several banks in the port and more than one cinema. There is a very pretty open air cinema a quarter of an hour's walk from the house. Also a very cheap internet cafe. The local taverna is excellent, just 5 minutes walk away at Faros, overlooking the sea. There is also a water park just minutes away which also serves meals. You can take boat trips from Aegina port and Perdika to the small islands nearby.

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: The accommodation is flexible. Couples on their own can use Bedroom 1, which has ensuite bathroom. Families may choose Bedrooms 2 & 3 which have their own bathroom and a separate entrance opening on to the central courtyard where people tend to meet together to talk and relax. There are four living areas; an indoor living room, central courtyard, the veranda, and around the pool. Outside: The one acre property is surrounded by trees (about 30 pistachio, olive and pine trees), climbers (bougainvillea and jasmine) and flowering shrubs (oleander, hibiscus, and banks of rosemary and lavender). There is a large table and chairs on the shaded veranda at the front, comfortable seating in the central courtyard, and a mobile barbecue. A fruit and vegetable garden leads to the private pool at the back (10 metres x 5 metres, depth 1 metre – 2 metres), where there are lounge sunbeds and a large parasol. There is parking space under the pine trees at the front of the property, which is gated. The sea is 20 metres away and it is possible to swim from there over flat rocks. Plastic shoes are advisable.
