Our apartment is located within an exclusive gated complex, set on the edge of the typically Spanish town of Los Alcazares, on the Mar Menor. The Mar Menor, meaning ‘small sea’ is the largest salt water lagoon in Europe. The area is well known for its temperate climate; long, safe sandy beaches; and warm, shallow crystal clear waters. The palm-lined, traffic-free promenade stretches for 7 km and is ideal for couples and families, with beachside cafe/bars, restaurants and children's play areas. There are several golf courses within close proximity, including the world famous La Manga. Murcia Airport is less than 10 mins and Alicante Airport 50 mins drive. The apartment itself is furnished to a very high standard, sleeps 4/6, and has a private balcony, with views over the residents’ pool. It is ideally located, with restaurants, bars, supermarket, shops and banks only a few mins walk away, while the beautiful Mar Menor beach and promenade is a 10 mins stroll away.

Why Carolyn Earl chose Cartagena & Mar Menor

I am naturally very cautious and did a lot of research before viewing in this area. Basically we were looking for a property that was close to an airport and within walking distance of the beach, shops, bars and restaurants, without being a typical tourist resort. This area ticked all the right boxes for us. The Mar Menor is beautiful and truly unique. Los Alcazares is an old fishing village and has retained its Spanish charm. It's fantastic to sit along the promenade and look across the Mar Menor to the La Manga strip, even better to take the ferry across. Both the old town and the new plaza provide plenty of choice of high quality restaurants and there are plenty of cafe/bars in the plaza and scattered along the promenade.

What makes this apartment unique

The complex is very friendly and within a secure gated community. We have tried to make the apartment a real home from home. It is very sleek and modern but comfortable. Our apartment also enjoys the benefits of a quiet location yet is only a couple of minutes walk to the plaza, which is buzzing with several quality restaurants and bars, and a further 5 mins walk to the beach and promenade. The plaza and promenade are pedestrianised so it is great for kids. My parents also appreciated the distinct lack of hills in the area - it really is as flat as a pancake. My husband enjoys golfing and is spoilt for choice - I hope he remembers to replace the divets! I prefer to browse a magazine on the balcony with a French Martini!

The apartment was lovely, modern, tasteful and spotlessly clean. It was really well equipped. Malcolm was an absolute gem, really helpful. The complex is lovely, very secure, near to all amenities (restaurants, shops and supermarkets) and a short walk from the beautiful beach. Carolyn was extremely helpful and has everything very well organised. We will definitely use again and recommend.

We all had a great holiday and the apartment was lovely,modern and very central for the supermarkets and restaurants. The kids spent most of their day in the pools. It was our first time in this area of Spain and we really enjoyed ourselves and look forward to returning. We definitely would rent the apartment again.

Coast/Beach:

The beautiful, blue flag, sandy beach of the Mar Menor is a 10 mins stroll away. This vast seawater lagoon is rich in minerals and iodine, and around 5 degrees warmer than the Med. It is renowned for its warm, shallow, crystal clear waters and therapeutic properties, ideal for safe family bathing and a wide range of water sports. The beaches of the Mar Menor boast around 7km of tree-lined pedestrianised promenade, with children’s play areas, bars and restaurants scattered along the way.

Travel:

The apartment is less than a 10 mins drive from Murcia (San Javier) Airport, which is served by a number of low cost carriers from all over the UK and Europe, while Alicante Airport is a 50 mins drive. Although a car is not essential, it can be useful for touring and exploring the Costa Calida area, with its picturesque towns and cities such as the Capital Murcia, the historic towns of Cartagena and Lorca, and the holy city of Caravaca de la Cruz. Car and bike hire can be booked locally.

Distances:

The naval port of Cartagena (20 mins drive) and the historic city of Murcia (30 mins drive) are well worth exploring for their shops, architecture and history, and both can be easily reached by local bus. A 40 mins drive north will take you to Elche`s vast shopping complex, where you can buy locally made shoes at vastly reduced prices. Aquapolis Water Fun Park, near the resort of Torrevieja, is 20 mins drive along the coast. There are also a number of large modern shopping complexes nearby.

Further Details:

There are weekly local markets just a short walk from the apartment, with direct produce from the 'garden of Spain', which take place on Tuesday and Saturday mornings and are well worth a visit. There are also local fishing villages within a few miles, serving excellent fresh fish and seafood. The old town of Los Alcazares is a 20 minutes walk away, where you will find many restaurants and tapas bars, in addition to the several restaurants located nearer to the apartment. If you are feeling homesick, a 25 minutes walk will take you to an English Community, where you can have traditional meals, including a Sunday roast, listen to live music and watch the footy.

The Mar Menor Ferry picks up from the sailing school at the nearby Las Palmeras beach between 15 June - 15 September and visits La Manga marina and the islands of the Mar Menor. A 1 hour and 45 minute trip costs around 10 euros.

Notes on accommodation: The apartment is furnished to a very high and comfortable standard. A selection of DVDs, games, and books are available for your entertainment. Communal pool consists of a large pool (with disabled access) and separate children's pool. Sorry but this is a non-smoking apartment and pets are not permitted. Outside: Patio doors lead out of the apartment onto a pleasant balcony with lighting, table and chairs, overlooking the communal pool area. The resort has 3 large swimming pools, each with their own separate children's pool area, set within large paved and landscaped gardens, within a secure gated enclosure. The nearest pool has a gently sloping access with a hand rail. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Linen and towels are provided for use in the apartment only (please bring your own beach towels). The apartment is cleaned prior to your arrival and on departure. Further cleans can be arranged for longer stays, at an additional cost. Other: Balcony: the balcony is overlooking the residents’ pool and is equipped with table and chairs. This can be accessed though the living room. An ashtray is provided for smoking on the balcony only.

Really clean, well maintained property- Very nice

Lovely apartment in this excellent complex. We stay on this complex every year for at least one week and this apartment is ideal, clean with good facilities.

The only negative is that the TV isn't in English, but who cares, your on Holiday anyway, get into the town and enjoy yourself.

I will be back in May and would not hesitate to book this apartment again.

Carolyn is also really helpful and Clive who met us is also really nice.

The person who has reviewed this apartment as one star is obviously just a miserable sod.

Dreadful

This apartment is very basic. No curtains, no English TV as no satellite connection.(So no WIFI). I did have to mention to Caroline about the state of the very stained mattress, Caroline does not take criticism well.Make sure you inform Caroline of your arrival time as I could not gain access until 19.30 on the 16th. Not a very nice week.

Owner's Response: I am gobsmacked by these comments. Several attempts were made to contact the guests to determine arrival time and make suitable arrangements with my keyholder. Due to no response, I confirmed with guests vacating that day that they could check-out late afternoon, as they had a late flight. When they eventually got in touch the day before their arrival date and advised that a late check-in didn't suit, they were invited to leave their luggage securely with my keyholder and have keys to access the apt as soon as it was cleaned. My keyholder described them as guests from hell, calling him for the most trivial of things. They had the cheek not to return my keys until the day after they were supposed to vacate without prior agreement with myself. I feel the rates charged are very reasonable for the standard of accommodation on offer, which seems to be above satisfactory for most guests. We hope that our guests have a pleasant stay at our apartment but I guess there's always one that's never happy!

Everything you could want from a holiday rental....a real home from home. Lovely and clean, spacious and comfortable, excellent facilities. The complex is very relaxed and has a friendly atmosphere. The pool areas are well looked after and there is plenty of room for the sunbeds!

The Mar Menor beach is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the sunshine. The resort of los Alcazares is a five minute walk from apartment and has plenty of choices of good value restaurants and bars. Highly recommended!!

This is a well maintained apartment and is equipped with everything that one might need on a self-catering holiday and is situated on a very secure and stylish complex. The complex is of a high standard and has 3 swimming pools, it is situated a 5 minute stroll from the shops and restaurants and a 10 minute stroll from the beach. If sea bathing is your thing there are miles of clean sands which are not overcrowded on a shallow lagoon which is excellent for swimming.

This was a lovely apartment in a nice quiet complex,has said in previous reviews its very handy for everything you could possibly want

from your holiday.This is the best complex in the area.

Everything in the apartment was 1st class it was a shame to come home.

Booking Notes:
A non-refundable deposit of £100 is required to secure the booking, with the balance to be paid in full 6 weeks before departure. A refundable damage bond of £100 is also required 6 weeks before departure to cover lost keys, replacement locks, damage/loss to the apartment/contents, which will be returned to you subject to no damage/loss during your stay. At least one member of the party must be over 30. Method of payment: bank transfer.

Changeover Day:
We are flexible about changeover days and departure times in order to accommodate our guests flight arrival and departure times. However, in the circumstances of a quick changeover, we may need to ask for your cooperation.

Notes on prices:
Prices are in GBP, based on a maximum of 4 occupants, and are fully inclusive of all linen and towels (not beach towels), electricity, and cleaning on departure. The air-conditioning is operated by a card meter (cards available in denominations of 10 and 20 euros. A surcharge of £25 per person per week for additional occupants is applied. Discounted prices for longer term and winter rentals are negotiable. We offer a welcome pack containing basic groceries to order (payable locally on arrival).

Owner's Cancellation Policy

  • 50% refund for cancellations more than 30 days before check-in date.
  • 100% refund for cancellations more than 60 days before check-in date.
