The Keeping Cottage

The Keeping Cottage sleeps 2 with room for a or baby in a cot. It has a sitting room with lovely country views, one bedroom with a 5ft French sleigh bed, contemporary shower room and modern well equipped kitchen. The cottage has a tiny outside area with table and two chairs.

About the property

The Keeping Place nestles in a quiet hamlet close to the renowned resort of Salcombe. The style of the house is French country and it boasts a wealth of character including ancient oak beams and flagstone floors. The layout of the house works extremely well for either one or two families sharing. There are two master bedrooms both with en-suites, and two further bedrooms sharing a shower room. The house is walking distance to a lovely safe, sandy beach with fabulous beach cafe. The property is well equipped and is very much a home from home, giving it a lovely atmosphere. The walled garden is safe for children. The Keeping Cottage sleeps 2 adults + child. The house and cottage, although one property, are separate and do not overlook each other, giving privacy to both. It is possible to rent the two, if the extra space is required, perhaps for Grandparents, a nanny or friends. The Keeping Cottage can be rented at any time of year and we are flexible on length of stay during low season.

About Annabel Levey

We are a family of four who have been living between the West country and France for 15 years, hence the French feel to the house! We have been renting our homes for 26 years and are therefore very experienced in providing what our clients wish for, ensuring they have a lovely relaxing holiday. We have renovated our properties over the years and this year our French home will also be available to rent. Our aim is to ensure that we offer a truly personal service, and have in fact made many friends over the years wiIth guests who have come to stay in one of our properties. Nothing gives us more pleasure than to share our home and know that our guests have enjoyed it as much as we do.

Why Annabel Levey chose Kingsbridge

We bought the house because the location is perfect - close enough to Salcombe to be able to join in all that goes on there during the summer, but far enough away to find peace and quiet. We also love to walk our Norwich terrier across the fields and many footpaths in the area. There are stunning clifftop and coastal walks which can be accessed by foot from the house.

Cozy cottage in a rural setting yet close to the beach

  • 4 of 5

A lovely cottage attached to the main house down a quiet lane. Very comfortably appointed and an ideal location for walking direct from the cottage or seeing the local attractions nearby by car. The beach at Thurlestone is around a 15 minute walk away, with access to the coastal path, with Hope Cove and the Bolt Tail nearby. Bigbury-on-Sea, Kingsbridge and Salcombe are all short drives away and there is a well-stocked coop at Malborough less than 10 minutes drive. All in all a great location from which to explore the South Hams.

Fall of character

  • 5 of 5

Lovely place to stay you have got everything you need, the coast is one mile walk away down a country lane, there's easy places to get to like Salcombe, Hope Cove and Kingsbridge to name a few also loads of national trust places. We really had a relaxing time and look forward to returning.

Cosy cottage in a beautiful part of Devon

  • 4 of 5

We found the cottage very comfortable and as it is tucked away in the countryside we enjoyed the peace and quiet. There is a nice feel to the cottage with interesting features and plenty of storage space, which is not obvious from its exterior. Although it is set amongst the winding lanes of the South Hams, the location is very handy for exploring Salcombe, Hope Cove and the South Devon coast. There is a lovely dog-friendly beach just down the road (with a nice but very pricey Beach Hut cafe), where our dog had her first dip in the sea. In fact, we found a lot of really good pubs and cafes that welcomed dogs, which is great on wet days. We did think that some information would have been useful, for example, if we hadn't been to the area before we wouldn't have known where the nearest food shops were, and we didn't see the note about the wifi until day 2. We had a really enjoyable week at The Keeping Cottage and would certainly go back.

The Keeping Cottage, an excellent base for exploring this corner of Devon.

  • 4 of 5

The Keeping Cottage is a snug, well equipped base for exploring this part of Devon. Located only a mile inland from the coastal path, with Thurlestone Sands, and the nature reserve behind the dunes, in one direction and Hope Cove in the other. There are no end of footpaths crossing the local dairy farms and linking with the coastal path so there is never a need to retrace your footsteps. Plenty of scope for circular routes. One day we walked along the coastal path to South Sands and took the ferry into Salcombe. Another day we walked to the great expanse of Bantham sands. Plenty of eateries to walk to too! Enjoyed sampling the local sea food in particular.

One or two things that might have enhanced our stay are:

A radio (my husband was suffering withdrawal from radio 4!)

A visitor book - I find reading previous recommendations very useful when I visit an area new to me.

Some milk on arrival. I guess I've come to expect this when we stay in cottages and it struck me as particularly ironic as we were adjacent to a dairy farm!

Some of the cutlery was a bit grimmey, and that whole drawer could benefit from a spring clean.

I found it difficult to read in the sitting room after dark with the lighting.

Gosh, it looks as if I am criticising. I'm not, we had a lovely time and I guess I'm jotting down things I've remembered which I hope you will find useful.

Things I particularly enjoyed are:

Having to wait for the entire herd of dairy cows to cross the road after milking - this would not happen in Surrey, and I loved it!

I loved the sounds of the countryside as soon as you opened the stable door each morning.

I loved the early morning light, particularly down on the beach, when I had it to myself.

All in all, I would certainly recommend The Keeping Cottage as a place to stay. It's location is brilliant, and it provides a comfortable base for a holiday.

Quaint and quiet, but lovely

  • 4 of 5

Lovely property, beautifully furnished and equipped and an oh so comfortable bed! Restful and so quiet at night- and fantastic for star gazing. Not too far from several lovely beaches (South Milton, Hope Cove, Torcross) some good walks and pretty towns (Salcombe, Dartmouth).

Perfect retreat

  • 5 of 5

The perfect retreat , a beautiful cottage with a French influence in walking distance to an unspoilt beach .

Nearby to popular Salcombe but set in the countryside so nice and quiet , we would return here again but bring our family and book the keeping place which is next door .

Owner's Response: Dear Sandra Thank you so much for your lovely review and it was such a pleasure to meet you both. One of the great joys of renting is the lovely people we meet, some who have become more like friends than visitors. We look forward to having you to stay again, and perhaps meeting more of your family! Warmest wishes Annabel

There is a beautiful beach exactly one mile from the property, which is an easy reasonably level walk. It is also possible to park at the beach. The beach is safe and sandy, with fabulous rock pools at low tide. There is a cafe at the beach which does delicious food, and in the evening you can take your own wine and enjoy the lovely seafood they serve, along with other dishes, and then walk back to the house. It really is a glorious beach the sunsets are spectacular!
