Beautiful 18th Century Oak Beamed Cottage in the Lake District near Windermere

Updated: 24-Oct-2016
Cottage near Lake Windermere, Lyth Valley, Lake District National Park - Peaceful Location In Small Hamlet, 5 Miles From Lake Windermere In The Beautiful Lyth Valley

The Peat House is in the small hamlet of Row in the Lyth Valley which is featured in the Lonely Planet Beautiful World book of the 200 most beautiful places. The cottage stands on the bottom edge of Whitbarrow Scar with magnificent views in all directions. Surrounded by damson orchards, fields and trees it's a rather special place. Our local pub the Lyth Valley is just 10 minutes walk and offers their own real ales and great food and the dining terrace has spectacular views across the valley. Many of the well known attractions of the Lake District are within easy reach, yet the cottage feels far from the hustle and bustle. We set out to create a home from home - our own experiences of self catering holidays have been very variable - so our aim was to achieve a very high standard of comfort and facilities. The cottage was designed and furnished with your every need and comfort in mind, using only high quality furniture, fittings and equipment. The Peat House is inspected by Quality in Tourism on behalf of Visit England, who have very high standards for holiday homes and was awarded a 4 star grading in January 2016. Sorry we don't accept pets and the property is no smoking.

Cosy cottage in excellent location

  • 4 of 5

This was a great find, as I always struggle to find a place with 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms (at a reasonable price). The cottage is in a great, quiet location, with walks from the doorstep. Although the weather wasn't great we still managed to get out on 3 walks, the autumn colours were stunning. The cottage is well equipped, and very cosy (double bed was very comfortable). We would certainly like to stay again.

Lovely Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Very impressive. This cottage is a bit like a Tardis- bigger inside once you open the front door. Very comfortable beds and full ensuite to each of the two bedrooms. We had a warm welcome from the owner and there was plenty of information leafets and books on the surrounding area to hand. We appreciated the HD TV, blu-ray player ( a number of films to watch ) and wifi for the childen. Kitchen was well equiped too with washer/dryer and dishwasher.

Lovely and quiet at night. You will need a car to get around ( or bikes - there is storage in the attached log store ). There are boat rides and a steam train around nearby Lake Windermere. Bowness on Windermere provides a thriving town with places to eat out as do pubs in the area.

We only stayed for a week, I wish it was two.Would recommend this cottage for sure.

Idyllic Haven

  • 5 of 5

Cottage was even better than we expected. All the comforts of home in a beautiful setting. Ideally located for Windermere, Kendal & the whole of the South Lakes area. Steven & Lorraine were warm, friendly & very welcoming. Nice touch having Tea, Coffee & Milk waiting for us. Very comprehensive information folders about the cottage itself, places to eat & drink locally and a HUGE file of info about walks & days out etc. Thoroughly enjoyed a relaxing week. Would certainly recommend to friends & would love to return ourselves. Thank you Steven & Lorraine. Kind Regards, Phil & Joy.

My daughter took me here on Thursday 26/2 for my birthday weekend, my birthday being on the Friday 27/2, and we arrived quite late, dropped our stuff off and wandered around and found a good Chinese take out - Jumbos - which was yummy. Got back sorted our stuff out and collapsed into the comfiest bed I have ever slept in. Next morning my daughter brought me coffe in bed and I got up, showered in the beautiful ensuite, got ready and went up to the kitchen to find pressies on the table, and cards and she had brought croissants, butter, jam and oj for breks. Then we went out for the day.

Went all over the place, totally gobsmacked with the scenery, had a great lunch at the Apple Pie Café in Keswick and were so stuffed we didn't go out for my "birthday meal" that night but stayed in and had a sort of buffet, listened to music and played backgammon, slept like a log. Sat up and had hot cross buns which we got at the Apple Pie Café homemade - gorgeous! then out fo the day again then back to find somewhere to have my birthday meal and found a place called the Brown Horse - best meal I have had in a long while!

All in all one of the best weekends I have had in along while, really good quality mum/daughter time in the most amazing little house which had everything you could possibly want and was spotless, comfy, cosy and homely.

Stephen and Lorraine (I hope I have got the names right!) thank you for helping me to have one of the best birthday weekends in a long time. And I am hoping my daughter will take me back there again some time in the not too distant future.

In fact if I ever want to go off on my own (which I sometimes do), I would come there and just stay there on my own and go out in the daytime to explore and come back in the evening and make summat nice to eat (or get a take out!!) and have a nice eve watching one of the many and varied dvds you have there!

It was a wonderful weekend and the little house was brilliant. Thank you.

All the best

Laura Bones (and Lindsay Wallace!).

I would have given it a 10/5 if I could!!!

Hidden Gem in the Lyth Valley

  • 5 of 5

A lovely quaint cottage in the Lyth valley which was exactly as described. Two large bedrooms (ensuite) and an open plan living space.

A very quiet hamlet but also close enough to all the main towns and attractions across the Lakes and southern peninsular.

Very warm welcome from Steven and the welcome pack and logs for the burner were a very nice touch. Highly recommended for a relaxing weeks away in the Lakes.

Plenty of great Inns and gastro-pubs close by as well.

From the Owner

Wonderful location in a small hamlet, loved the house the moment we saw it, had such character but needed at lot of work. Spent a year renovating and changing the cottage, which was a major undertaking. Did most of the work myself, kept me fit but felt exhausted at times having a full time job as well.

Activity and Interests

Car: necessary

For those travelling by car to the area, leave the M6 at junction 36 and after just 15 minutes on the A590/A5074 you arrive at the cottage. There are good links by coach, bus and rail to the area and a direct link to Windermere by rail from Manchester Airport, but you will need a taxi for the last part of your journey.

Lake Windermere 4 miles, Bowness on Windermere 5 miles, Kendal 6 miles, Ambleside 8 miles.

Further Details:

The whole fell behind the house has numerous walks all through outstanding scenery. There is a small wood 5 minutes walk away with lovely wild flowers which has been designated SSSI status. From the cottage it's possible to follow the bridal path around Whitbarrow Scar into the Winster valley and from there enjoy a drink or meal at the Masons Arms or the Hare & Hounds at Bowland Bridge. Lots of other great pubs in the area with outstanding food - see our web site. In Windermere, Ambleside and Ulverston there are many attractions to visit and things to do - all within a short drive by car.

The Peat House has full leisure club membership at the Damson Dene Hotel which allows up to four people free access to the leisure club, please take your own towels. The facilities include a swimming pool, spa pool, sauna, steam room and gym, it's 10 minutes drive from the cottage.

In Bowland Bridge which is 10 minutes by car there is a local shop. The farm shop near the cottage opens Tuesday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. offering vegetables and fruit. In Windermere there is a Booths supermarket which is very similar to Waitrose and a Morrisons plus there is a Tesco Express in Bowness which is open from 6am to 11pm. Further away in Kendal there is a large Asda and a Morrisons supermarket. The nearest large Tesco is in Carnforth where you can also order on line deliveries to the Peat House from www.tesco.com. Sainsburys will deliver on line orders as do Asda.

Children are very welcome and we have catered for their special needs.

We can provide a cot (you need to bring your own bedding), highchair and all the safety equipment you might need - you only need to let us know and they will be ready for you. The decking area is particularly safe with lockable gates to prevent access to the bridal path and lane. We have those small but important items you may have forgotten to bring, such as a night light, children's cutlery.

From the Owner

Near to all that the Lakes has to offer but away from the busy towns. Lovely oak beams and a wood burner make for perfect evenings. Walking from the door is great and the local pubs and restaurants are ideal for a relaxing holiday. Our visitors come back again and again and write such nice things in our visitors book.
