The Old Pig Barn is a four star, one-bedroom cottage built on the foundations of the original pig barns standing in the grounds of The Homestead in Stokesby. The Old Pig Barn is on a single level and sleeps two in a double bedroom with a double sofa bed available in the lounge. The cottage has been furnished and decorated to a high standard; it provides modern coordinated accommodation within a traditional setting. The cottage also benefits from a large selection of the Owners' art collection. All rooms have high ceilings and wood flooring throughout. The main living area is open plan with a modern well fitted kitchen. The Old Pig Barn has stunning views over the grounds of The Homestead including the adjoining day ticket fishery and the open farmland around. The cottage is adjacent to the owners' own day ticket fishery, well stocked with carp and tench.

The Old Pig Barn is a charming well equipped cottage, set in quiet and peaceful surroundings. It is clean and very well maintained.

It is in easy reach of many coastal resorts, and the Norfolk Broads, as well as being within lovely countryside and pretty villages.

The owners are friendly and helpful, and will provide new laid free range eggs upon request and at a reasonable price, as well as vegetables during the summer months.

A few minutes walk away is the small village of Stokesby, which has a shop for essentials, and a cafe/tea room, which provides good plain home cooked meals. Adjacent to this is the "Ferry Boat Inn" which also provides typical "pub grub" though a little pricey. It is right alongside the river, and you can watch the boats going past or mooring, which is interesting and relaxing, especially in good weather.

A short drive away is the small town of Acle, which boasts a Budgens and Co-op supermarket for the larger shopping trip, as well as sundry other shops and restaurants.

The site also has a well-stocked fishing lake for the keen anglers, and fishing is free for visitors staying at the Old Pig Barn.

All in all, we had a lovely weeks visit, doing as little or as much as we wished to do. We would highly recommend this cottage to anyone, and we are planning a return visit next year.

Special interest holidays:

The cottage overlooks the locally well-regarded day ticket Mill Road Fishery, also run by the owners. The lake is well stocked with carp, tench and rudd. The carp run to almost 20lb, with plenty of double figure fish. The lake is open 12 months of the year. It has its own dedicated web site with hints, tips and latest news.

Coast/Beach:

The wide open sandy beaches of Great Yarmouth are less than 10 miles by car. A train service also runs from Acle.

Distances:

The Old Pig Barn is on the outskirts of the delightful village of Stokesby. Within 5 minutes walking distance is the Ferry pub/restaurant and the Riverside Tea Rooms. Two miles away is Acle – The Gateway to the Broads - with supermarkets, pharmacy and butchers, weekly market and country auction as well as a pub and several restaurants.

Further Details:

Eight miles away is Great Yarmouth with its beaches and many museums and attractions to visit including the race course and harbour. The Old Pig Barn affords easy access to all parts of the Norfolk Broads where you can explore the network of natural waterways, with Wroxham, Stalham and Horning all within a twenty minute drive.

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: The cottage is warmed with electric panel heating with separate thermostatic valves in each room. There is also a multi fuel wood burner - a supply of logs and kindling are provided free. A welcome pack with local produce is provided on arrival. The owners, Janet Duncan and Andy Jameson live in the adjacent thatched house and are always available to assist with any of your requirements. Outside: The cottage has its own private garden and table and chairs are provided to enjoy views over the open countryside. There is a separate access to the Old Pig Barn which leads to car parking for up to 3 cars immediately adjacent to the cottage with security lighting. There is access to a shed in which to store the BBQ and for guests to store fishing tackle, walking gear etc. Guests also have access to the Owners' 4 acre wildlife haven. Adjacent to the cottage is the well regarded Mill Road Fishery. The lake, run by the owners, is well stocked with carp and tench and provides all year round sport. Towels and linen are included.
