House in Soumartre, Nr. Faugeres, Languedoc-Roussillon, France - Very Peaceful Location, Beautiful Views Over Forest And Vineyards
Cedar-built, single-storey house, which sleeps six. On the edge of the picturesque medieval village of Soumartre, near Faugères and Bédarieux. With a pretty, terraced garden and private swimming pool. The house is in a very tranquil location and has beautiful views over the hilly, forested Parc Régional and the vineyards of Faugères. The house has three bedrooms, two double (one with en-suite, WC and shower) and one twin, a bathroom, utility room with washing machine etc, and a spacious and airy open-plan kitchen, dining and living room, which opens onto a wooden veranda and outdoor dining area. It is a ten-minute drive to the bustling town of Bédarieux, with its supermarkets and restaurants. The beautiful valleys of the Orb and Mare rivers are nearby, leading into the forested mountains and gorges of the Haut Languedoc. To the south, wide sandy beaches are less than 45 minutes away.

About the Owner
Kim is a therapist working with individuals and couples and Rob is a psychotherapist so having a place to relax and wind down is really important to us. Making this already welcoming house our own has been a really enjoyable project, and we would like to feel our guests will share some of this enjoyment. We both have a sense of freedom and release each time we arrive: something to do with the air, the light and the smells of the forest and garrigue - the herb-filled local terrain.

We spent an enjoyable holiday at Maison Vercoe which is a well equiped and very spacious villa set in tranquil surroundings. It is ideally placed with a backdrop of wooded hills and is perfect for relaxing and enjoying alfresco dining on the terrace. Highly recommended. S Hopkins Bexhill Sussex.
Having spent a very enjoyable holiday in the Languedoc area of France at the above property, I would like to express the pleasure my partner and I found in stopping at this very spacious and well equipped villa. The view from the outside patio is too die for, overlooking rolling hills and mountains in the distance. We were lucky enough to have all our meals outside and particuarly enjoyed our sundowners/aperitifs. Thank you for a great time. D H Birch.
We had a lovely holiday in Soumatre - the house was lovely and spacious and we all really enjoyed staying there. Everything was absolutely fine and we would definately recommend it to others. There was lots to do in the local area and we p

What a great setting. Quiet and surrounded by woodland and vineyards. House really clean and very well appointed with three showers and two baths. Three patio areas and pool to cool off in. To be able to hear birdsong all day long was quite remarkable. Total relaxation.
Tranquil setting with beautiful views!
The house is large and well equipped with incredible views from every window. Situated in a very peaceful location, if you want to get away from it all - this is the place to be. Apart from our first night when we visited La Forge for dinner, we ate every meal here. Breakfast and dinner on the terrace, lunch by the pool. Our favorite time of day was the pre-dinner cocktail on the wonderful swing on the lower terrace. So peaceful and relaxing. The house has everything you need including laundry facilities and wi-fi. Note - if you are arriving on a Sunday, be sure to bring provisions as most of the supermarkets are closed Sundays except for the Hypermarket which closes at 1:00 p.m.
A lovely villa in a great location
We had a really enjoyable week. The house is very spacious and extremely well equipped. It's in a beautiful setting with great local walks (take the path at the bottom of the drive towards Fougeres for some terrific views), and relatively easy reach of the coast with excellent beaches, lakes with good watersports, and the Languedoc hills and gorges. Montpellier is a little further but a great city to visit.
Hope to return!
Secluded in Soumartre
A wonderful property in a great location. Lovely and peaceful with fantastic views. Close enough to excellent facilities in Bedarieaux for families and in the middle of a beautiful rural location. A large well maintained property extremely clean with everything you need for a relaxing and comfortable holiday. Close to Pezenas and Montpellier both excellent places to visit as well as within striking distance of Aigues Morte and Le Grau Du Roi.
Make sure you try a variety of local Faugeres wines to find one you like.
Marseillaise Plage great for swimming and Sete great for seafood.
Visit the national park for the outstanding scenery and secluded villages and just take the time to explore some of the back roads to see the best views.
We had a marvellous time and would heartily recommend this property to anyone. As a family it was a real bonus to have wifi to get the children's Kindles, IPods and other gizmos going not to mention the pool, a welcome break after a hot day travelling.
It was perfect!! The location was good & easy to find and close to Lakes & beach.
The house was lovely with fantastic views and well stocked. There's not much in Soumartre but its a quiet pretty village. I would definitely go back.
From the Owner
“We are very much drawn to the landscape and culture of Languedoc. What drew us to this house in particular was its tranquillity, its airiness and spaciousness, and its views over the forested hills of the regional park on one side and of vineyards and mountains on the other. It was built in 2000, mainly of Canadian cedar, and its builder, who is a nearby and friendly neighbour, planned it on ecological lines. With its sheltered pool, it turns out to be cool in high summer and cosy in winter, with a big traditional open fire.”
Activity and Interests
The wide, sandy beaches of Valras, Sérignan, Portiragnes and Sète are about a 45 minute drive away.
Airports: Béziers, 28 kilometres (18 miles), Montpellier, 79 kilometres (49 miles), Toulouse, 169 kilometres (106 miles), Carcassonne, 88 kilometres (55 miles), or Girona, Spain, 232 kilometres (144 miles). Car: from Calais, 737 kilometres (461 miles), Dieppe, 657 kilometres (411 miles), Le Havre 656 kilometres (410 miles)TGV: to Montpellier, with connections to Béziers and Bédarieux. A car/car hire is essential.
Faugères is about a ten minute and Bédarieux a fifteen minute drive away. The Lac du Salagou, and in the opposite direction, Béziers, are both about half an hour away. Montpellier is around an hour, the Pyrenées within two hours and Barcelona about three-and-a half hours away.
There are excellent local walks, past small vineyards, with stunning views of the surrounding hills and mountains and the coastal plain. Particularly pleasant is the walk to three sixteenth-century windmills, which stand on the hill above Faugères. There are numerous 'caves' in the vicinity where one can sample and purchase wine from Faugères or Saint-Chinian. Ancient nearby villages, such as Roquessels, dominated by a ruined castle, or the medieval villages of Villemagne or Boussagues, are well worth visiting. Bédarieux has two supermarkets, and some good and one first-class restaurant (La Forge). Slightly further afield, one is in the heart of Cathar country, with its circular and fortified villages and towns, ancient churches, abbeys and cloisters. The beautiful, man-made Lac du Salagou, on the eastern, Lodève side of Bédarieux, offers swimming and wind-surfing. The Cirque de Mourèze, with its strange standing rocks, is a unique geological feature, and the lively town of Lodève contains a small art gallery which often has exhibitions of international interest. Nearby too is the huge Lerab Ling Buddhist Centre, set in a breathtaking landscape. To the west of Bédarieux are the spectacular Gorges d'Héric, and to the north the extensive and dramatic Gorges du Tarn. Beyond lies the great Viaduc de Millau, and the regional park of the Grands Causses, the airy uplands of the southern Massif Central. Béziers, to the south, with its Spanish feel, sits on the Canal du Midi, alongside which are delightful cycle rides. Beyond, about a 45 minute drive from Soumartre, are the wide, sandy beaches of Valras, Sérignan, and Sète, and the pretty marina at Marseillan. Further afield, but within easy reach, are cosmopolitan Montpellier, historic Aigues-Mortes, the Carmargue, Marseille, Nîmes, and Aix-en-Provence. In the other direction lie Narbonne, Perpignan, Collioure, the Pyrenées and the Spanish border.

“The house feels secluded but not remote, and it is in fact only an hour from Montpellier airport and less from Béziers. What sets it apart from other properties we looked at is that while it belongs within a pleasant little community it is not overlooked by any other dwelling. We may live here permanently one day, a more and more tempting possibility the more time we spend in the area and the house - cooking, reading, writing, or doing nothing. Lovely walks into the hills and woods of Haut Languedoc are right on the doorstep.”
