Sleeps 4/ in a private, luxury accommodation, two bedrooms, each with en-suit bathroom and private sitting rooms. Fully centrally heated, warm in the winter but cool during summer days. About Hjordis

The owners are Hjördís Guðbjörnsdóttir (Icelandic - Public Health Nurse) and Robin Bovey (Canadian/British - Biologist with a lot of interest in Nature Conservation). We live in the farmhouse in a private apartment separate from the guest accommodation, so we are always available to assist our guests. We worked for many years for International Humanitarian Organisation´s in different parts of the world. Since we bought the house in 2006, Hjördís has been in charge of the house renovation but Robin on and off working for UNEP in Sudan. Robin is also a keen woodturner so when he is at home he spends a lot of time in his workshop - you can take a look at his work at http://logs2art.eu/. Hjördís also works on her own things, making jewelry and products from the lavender grown in the garden. They have their craft for sale in their home. Languages spoken in our home is Icelandic, English and Portuguese.

Why Hjordis chose Vila Nova de Cerveira

We had travelled a great deal over the years for work and wanted to find a house where we could create a calm and peaceful accommodation for guests. The Alto Minho is a very interesting area, full of natural beauty and interesting historical sites to look at.

Beaches are close by, both in Portugal and in Spain but we are very close to the border of Spain. All around Covas there are big and small towns with different things to look at and Spain only a few km away.

What makes this farmhouse unique

We wanted our house to be peaceful and calm and we think we have managed to give it that feel. We have tried to make sure to keep its original look as much as possible even though it has everything that a modern house has today.

We think it is an excellent place to rest and "recharge" your "batteries" and that is what we have to offer, a calm and nice place surrounded by nature and beauty - inside and out.

09.2012 - A great place to stay. Our hosts made us feel most welcome, inviting us to join them for a drink and snack in their beautiful garden. The apartment had a very interesting decor and was beautifully furnished. Nice and cool from the hot sun in parts but a wonderful sunny light airy kitchen leading onto a quaint floral patio area where we barbequed every evening watching the sun go down over the Portugese hills. A short walk to the swimming pool which was a great way to cool down after a long hot day on our motorbikes. Added bonus - fresh raspberries and tomatoes from the garden - delicious. A short walk through the villlage took us to the supermarket where most things were sold.

We had a wonderful time.



05.2012 - It was a wonderful stay in fascinating and peaceful surroundings. The accomodation were beautiful and comfortable where old times and new met in good harmony.

Notes:
This is a lovely old farmhouse built in 1706 that we have carefully renovated and modernized. It is centrally heated, warm in the winter, but the thick granite walls keep the house cool during hot summer day's. Our garden always has a resident Black Redstart, the first bird you will hear in the morning and the sound of Scops Owls at night is a feature of the valley and we always have lots of butterflies on the lavender around the garden. We try hard to reduce our carbon footprint – we use solarpanels for water heating and electricity and have an organic garden. We have a large collection of books which you are welcome to borrow and we also have a good collection of DVD´s if you would like to watch a movie in the evening, DVD-players are available. We have decorated our home with the many pieces of art and crafts we have acquired during our time working in various parts of the world, we hope that this gives you the same pleasure it gives us. The property overlooks farmland and woodland with the Serra de Arga beyond. The garden is terraced with lots of private corners to enjoy. It has beautiful views over the Coura Valley and beyond. The garden is full of flowers and outside the rooms is a small courtyard full of roses and screened by vines. If you want to sunbathe, there is a beautiful area with sun-loungers and a parasol´s if it gets too sunny. Depending on when you visit, we often have a surfeit of asparagus, berries, vegetables and herbs from our garden, which we are pleased to be able to offer you. There is a barbecue for your use and outdoor tables and chairs if you want to eat outdoors and enjoy the views. We have solar water heating and solar electrical supply that is hooked into the national grid. There is a washing machine an outside cloth-line, an iron and ironing board. We provide linen, towels and dressing gowns. Beach towels can be provided if asked for. The rooms are cleaned and linen changed once a week. We have decorated the house with the many pieces of art and crafts we have acquired during our time working in various parts of the world. We hope this will give you the same pleasure it gives us.

An APARTMENT IN COVAS

We thoroughly enjoyed our fortnight in Hjordis and Robin's apartment in Covas.The accommodation was excellent with many interesting features- (which for us was a first) a chapel in the garden! Our hosts where most hospitable and excellent company, and helpful in many practical ways(including arranging for a replacement of the hire car when the original car conked out) The house is well placed for visits to the coast, local towns , Spain ( just across the Minha river) and the local countryside with many unland roads affording spectacular views of the area. For us , a most memorable holiday in this beautiful part of Portugal

A little slice of paradise!

What a wonderful two weeks we spent as guests of Hjordis and Robin! This accommodation has everything you could want in terms of mod-cons, furnishings etc and so much more! The garden is beautiful and offers wonderful views of the Serra d'Arga mountain range and is well equipped with loungers, tables, parasols and even a hammock! Relaxing in gorgeous, tranquil surroundings is paramount here and we (2 adults and 3 young children) took full advantage of this! The area itself is rural which adds to its charm yet it is easy to drive a short distance to the coast, over the nearby border to Spain or a little further South to Porto and Amarante. Porto was really beautiful and made even more accessible thanks to Hordis' useful advice and tips. Amarante Water Park was a must-do for us with three young children (aged 10, 8 and 5) and again Hjordis helped in ensuring we made it there successfully ;) Another aspect that really impressed us was how inexpensive this region was in terms of dining out (very important with 5 mouths to feed!). This left us extra money to sample the very reasonably-priced local wine Vinho Verde. All in all, this was one of the best holidays we have ever had and this was helped by Hjordis and Robin who were so welcoming and helpful. We hope to be back some day!

Wonderful, tranquil and warm

I have visited this luxury accommodation in Covas twice. Once as a stop and rest on a pilgrimage to Santiago del Compostella, where Hjordis' nursing skills and helpful advice got me back on my feet. I liked it so much there that I came again with the extended family a year later and stayed a week. It is a quiet town, very well situated and close to major attractions. The flat is very tastefully renovated and has every comfort. It is clean and Hjördís, the owner, is very warm and helpful. I enjoyed the pateo in the morning sun, dinners outside on the veranda, going for walks or driving to nearby towns for excursions. I tried two restaurants in the village, both fine. I have only praise for this oasis and cannot wait to go there again.

A little bit of heaven!

We had the most fantastic stay at Hjordis and Robins fabulous property. It was 5 star accommodation with extras! Everything you could possibly need was readily available. The property was set in a lovely location and pretty central to visit lots of beautiful places. We ventured over to Spain a few times and visited places Robin and Hjordis recommended and we were not disappointed! The restaurants we tried were amazing. The setting for the accommodation was beautiful with stunning views. The gardens and patio area were full of flowers, immaculate and so peaceful. Nesi was great fun and always so happy to see you when you returned. We would love to think we will return one day as this is by far the best place we have ever stayed! Don't doubt whether to book just do it as you will definitely not be disappointed!

Fantastic place

We came to Covas in spring time, it was my first stay in Portugal and what a fantastic place. Hjordis and Robin are such wonderful hosts and Nesi became my favorite dog ever! The apartment is decorated in such tasteful and generours manner - its like being in a 5 star boutique hotel. We went sightseeing and wine tasting in the picturesque neighbourhood. The prices are very affordable and the portuguese are extremely hospitable. Our favorite restaurant was Foz de Minho in the town of Caminha. We will come back for sure!

Unbeatable

Our second stay here and every bit as magicl as the first time. Local restaurant at the top of the hill has been smartly upgraded since a couple of years ago, so that males it even better. Even Hjordis wasn`t able to keep a spell of chilly wet weather from creeping in but she makes up for minor mishaps like that by being such a wonderful host. We hope to be back yet again before too long !
