Farmhouse in Sees, Orne, Lower Normandy, France - Self Contained Rural Retreat, 5km From Cathedral Town Of Sees With All Its Amenities

18th century stone and granite farmhouse at the end of long private lane. Set in its own 4 acre plot of mainly pasture land. Located in a completely private rural location it is within very easy reach of all amenities,(7kms from Sees). The house is very spacious and although has only three bedrooms has the capacity to sleep at least ten by using a large mezzanine area. The house, although fully restored is furnished with antiques throughout. There are two bathrooms in the main house plus an extra shower in the gym and sauna building, adjourning the swimming pool. There is a good sized living room and separate dining room with antique table and chairs to seat 10. The kitchen is well equipped and has its own original bread oven. With its oil fired central heating, as well as a large open fireplace in the dining room La Guelandiere is an ideal place to spend cosy autumn or winter holidays.

About Caroline Hawley

My name is Caroline Hawley, I am married to John, have two grown up sons and a black Labrador! We run an antiques auction business from our home in Yorkshire and I am a BBC antiques expert on Bargain Hunt, Flog It etc.. Since I saw and fell in love with La Guelandiere I have spent the last seven years restoring the farmhouse. This has been both great fun and a great challenge!! There was no electricity, water or glass in many of the windows, guests will be pleased to know that we now have all three in abundance and lots more besides! John and I have spent quite a lot of time in France over the last few years but the demands of the business mean that we need to spend more time in England therefore we have decided to rent out the house. My family, friends and I adore spending time here and I am sure that you will too.

Why Caroline Hawley chose Orne

We especially love this area for its temperate climate, plentiful rivers and forests, abundant wildlife and delicious regional produce. The area is easily accessible from England. There is a quality of life which we seem to have lost in England. Life seems to move at a slower pace, allowing people to have time for each other.

What makes this farmhouse unique

The farmhouse is set in splendid isolation in its own 4 acre, grounds, however a 7km drive will take you to Sees, cathedral town which offers everything you would require. In Sees there are shops, restaurants, banks, cafes and small cinema. The inland lake/beach of Le Mele is easy to find and very fun. A 12 minute drive can take you to the historic lace making city of Alencon, which tourist activities can be found, 40 minutes away is the famous 24 hr motor racing city of Le Mans. Paris can be reached within 2 hours. From this base you can enjoy great days out but also great days in! Should you not wish to venture far this rural retreat offers everything you would wish for a relaxing break, heated swimming pool, sauna, gym, huge open fireplace and plentiful supply of logs!

A wonderful retreat

We have stayed in several properties in the local area, while visiting family and this is far the best. The property is very spacious and well equipped, we all like to cook, so rarely eat out and there was everything we needed, particularly loved the pots of fresh herbs on the patio near the kitchen door. The bedrooms are spacious with very comfortable beds with nice linen. Everywhere was clean and the house was a pleasure to be in. The grounds are lovely and although not warm enough to sit out, we enjoyed he privacy and freedom. Our young labrador was in his element, We would certainly recommend this property, you will not be disappointed. Hope to return very soon.

Truly unique

Excellent value for money, amazing pool for kids

Family of 7 including grandparents and children aged 15, 10 and 5 years old. We have just unpacked after a very relaxing week that involved little more than eating, shopping and swimming!!! Caroline, the owner, was a pleasure to deal with and offered lots of help in the planning stage including researching opening times for supermarkets and the best place to horsehide for a beginner. The property was clean and well prepared for our arrival with very clear instructions on how to use everything. The house is large and well equipped with excellent bedlinen and the kitchen contains everything you need. I made good use of the dishwasher, washing machine and tumble drier and have just arrived home with only half a load of washing which is always a bonus. I would recommend taking more towels (pool and house towels are provided) if you have kids like mine that will swim three times each day as we very quickly used up the house supply. This trip was approximately our 15th to France and this is definitely the warmest, cleanest and most enjoyable pool that our kids have been lucky enough to use. The gym and the sauna are just an added bonus! There was ample provision for outside seating for all of us with plenty of sunbeds around the pool and the bbq and patio area were also used regularly. We only really ventured out to eat a couple of times and we took the kids karting which was great fun. Apart from that, we lazed around and enjoyed the beautiful pool and garden - a great week for all of us. We paid 'high season' prices for a week in August and I can tell you (as someone who has rented many, many times) this house offers truly great value for money. My only complaint is that the sun didn't shine a little bit more! Thanks Caroline - you have been a wonderful host.

Highly recommended.....our second visit!

Just returned from our second stay at La Guelandiere and it was fantastic once again!

Very secluded and peaceful but close enough to the delightful town of Sees. First time we visited Paris and did lots of trips, this time we spent most of the time at the pool. Our kids loved the pool, keep and eye on them but with roman steps and shallow sides, even at the deep end, they will enjoy it.

Remember this is the countryside, with wonderful wildlife to match, we saw wild boar, deer, dragon flies etc etc!

Lots of room in the house to chill out and get away from the heat of the summer.

Once you find the entrance to the long private driveway through the woodland, you will be taken in by the tranquil location. (Follow the owners directions to the entrance very carefully and you will be fine)

I would highly recommend this farmhouse for families and for those wanting a base to discover the local area. Paris on the train, lakes just a short drive away, local towns and cities to explore......what more could you ask for. The owners are exceptionally nice to deal with and will ensure that you have a brilliant holiday!

We'll be back.....again!

Maison chaleureuse en pleine nature

Nous avons passé un week-end prolongé entre ami dans cette petite ferme située à 15 min d'Alençon.

La maison est très bien équipée (salle de sport, terrasses, salon, salle à manger, grande cuisinière, et grandes chambres). Une piscine extérieure chauffée est également présente, même si nous n'avons pas pu en profiter à cause de la saison.

La maison se situe au bout d'un chemin, sans voisins autour, uniquement une forêt et une clairière. A proximité immédiate de la voie rapide Sées-Alençon (pas un bruit!), son emplacement est idéal pour vsisiter l'Orne.

Caroline est une propriétaire disponible et attentionnée. Nos échanges ont toujours été rapides et efficaces.

Notes on accommodation: The property benefits from oil fired central heating to all rooms including the gym and has a large open fireplace in the dining room. The property is suitable for children but care must be taken with the swimming pool, well and small pond, near the house. The well has been covered with a permanent metal grill for safety. The swimming pool has a security cover which we would recommend is left in place at all times when the pool is not in use. As the mezzanine area is accessed by ladder it is not suitable for young children, although teenagers love it! Pets are welcomed, our labrador has been a frequent visitor and loves the place! For the comfort of all our guests we ask for no smoking in the house. Outside: The 4 acre grounds are mainly made up of pasture with very few cultivated areas. There are a variety of fruit trees, including apple, cherry, chestnut and walnut. There are three separate patio areas. There is a shady courtyard off the kitchen with granite topped table and chairs, a very large poolside patio with patio furniture which gets the sun throughout the day and evening. Finally a patio with picture book, original well adjourns the living room. This is a great place to sit and enjoy a sundowner while watching the wildlife in the field. A barbeque is provided. The private heated swimming pool measures 10x5m. The depth graduates from 1metre to 1.75 metres.There is a separate room next to the pool housing a Tylo 6 seater sauna and gym with its own sound system, (ipod required). Utility Room: Across the courtyard from the kitchen there is a utility room which houses the boiler, washing machine and a separate drinks fridge! There is also a ceramic sink. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: House, pool and tea towels are included and are provided at the beginning of each week. The property is cleaned before each new guest, we would ask that guests please leave the property as they find it. Other: There is a very spacious upstairs landing area with seating and a desk which provides extra living space. There is a separate building which houses a gym, sauna and shower, complete with own music system, (iPod required).
