House With Amazing Views Over The Libyan Sea In Unspoilt Area Of Crete

Bedrooms 4
Property type house

About the property

Painters house in Kolokassia, Nr. Frankocastello, South Western Crete, Greece - Peaceful Location On Hillside Just Above The Sea Below The White Mountains

House with amazing views over the Libyan sea and the White mountains. 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and separate artists studio house, ie one further bedroom. Surrounded by numerous terraces for outdoor living. Situated in secure walled garden. There is a short walk from the car to the house by village path past the spring that provides the water supply. Roughly 300m. This area of Crete boasts 320 days a year of sunshine. The house has no mains electricity, there is solar power for charging mobiles etc and in the evening we light old fashioned oil lamps. The surrounding hills are the home of goats, sheep, wildlife and birds. We often see the indigenous Cretan vulture eagle. There are amazing walks and fabulous beaches in this area, if you like walking and/or the sea you will love this property.

About Matilde Cooke

The owners of this house are Paul Cooke, a painter and Matilde Cooke, an opera singer. They have 2 children, 10 and 12, a dog and 2 cats.

Why Matilde Cooke chose Sfakia

We stumbled on the abandoned medieval village of Kolokassia on a walk at the end of Asfendou Gorge. We were intrigued by the ruins, all built around a central Cretan arch and the position of the village is charming. Paul always wanted a place in the mountains and Matilde's dream was always to live by the sea. We felt we had found the perfect compromise! We bought this property as a ruin about 10 years ago and have restored it slowly, trying to preserve it but make it comfortable at the same time. This part of Crete is very unspoilt and there are few tourists here. The local tavernas are family run and the the food is delicious and very reasonable.

What makes this house unique

Our house in Kolokassia is the most peaceful place I know. It is surrounded by amazing nature and constantly throughout the day your eye is drawn towards the sea. The sky at night is extraordinary with a steady parade of shooting stars. We sit on the terrace at night drinking Raki and talking till the small hours. And then when you go to sleep, either on a bed under the stars or in the house you sleep the most refreshing sleep imaginable. Then, the next day there are so many nice beaches to choose from. Or walks. As a special treat we will go on a small taxi boat to Loutro, a village only reachable by boat. This is the bluest water I have ever seen. Our house is great for the children, an adventure and a real bonding experience for the family as a whole. We think of it as our paradise.

Guestbook comments from the owner

June 2011

We have just returned having spent our two week honeymoon at this house. We were overwhelmed by the natural beauty and serenity of the property. Not having electricity proved no problem at all. The property is absolutely stunning and exactly what we were after. Access to the house is either by the old village path (fairly level), or for quick access via a series of very steep steps which would not suit those with mobility issues. A car is essential, you are near absolutely stunning beaches and delicious genuine tavernas. We had the best holiday of our lives. If you want to truly get away from it all, it is nothing short of perfect.'

Your house has been a sheer joy for us. Perfect. The lack of tourism and location is a treat to find. You have done wonders, and great planning .. vistas thru the garden every direction. Wonderful walks, plants and colours new to us. We think the hills must be a profusion and riot of colour and interest in May? Yrs S&C

Dream location

  • 5 of 5

We loved every moment of our two weeks at Kolokassia, which were mostly spent gazing absent-mindedly at the spectacular view from the terraces, following the sun around the lovely terraces and listening to the delightful sounds of bells (from the hillside goats and sheep) and birdsong. All the local beaches and tavernas were excellent and very quiet as it was the beginning of the season. May is a great time to visit - the weather is fine and warm and the wild flowers are spread profusely across the landscape.

Dominique and Yves (who live locally) were very helpful in showing us all the necessary details. The lack of mains electricity wasn't a problem and lighting the lamps and candles was a charming ritual each evening and seemed to fill the house with a golden glow. The house wouldn't suit those with mobility problems (or an aversion to driving on steeply winding roads) but if you want peace, solitude, spectacular views (plus amazing star-gazing), proximity to splendid beaches and friendly tavernas, Kolokassia couldn't be bettered.
