New Cottage has been completely renovated keeping the feel and character of the original. It is one of 8 cottages clustered round a courtyard. At the back the extensive play area is well used, as is the communal table tennis room. The enclosed courtyard has small swings for small children. The laundry is shared by all the cottages. Hillside location with views of the valley, 5/10 minute walk to the beach and coastal path.

About Kate Williams

We first went to Porth Farm Cottages nearly 30 years ago. Since then we have holidayed in the cottages most years, often with friends or family in other cottages. In 2007 we had the opportunity to buy New Cottage and we have subsequently completely refurbished the cottage trying very hard to maintain the original feel of the cottage we have known over the years.

Kate Williams purchased this cottage in 2007

Why Kate Williams chose Newquay & St Austell area

There is no better place in England. Beaches, walks, scenery and a contented peaceful setting.

Wonderful Find

  • 5 of 5

Our stay here was just wonderful! With a 10min walk to the beach (we had a toddler, so it may be faster!), we spent a very happy week here. The property is well equipped and of high standard. It was clean and well cared for. Leading up to our stay the owner contacted us to make sure we knew where everything would be. I would highly recommend this cottage, not only for the location and the quality of where we stayed, but on the care and attention shown to us by the owner. We look forward to coming back next year!!!

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Newquay Airport at 3 Miles Nearest Train : Newquay at 9 Miles Nearest Beach : Mawgan Porth at 500 Metres

Coast/Beach:

Mawgan Porth beach is a wonderful sandy surfing beach life guarded in the summer season. There are other surfing beaches facing out to sea at different angles within an easy drive: Harlyn Bay, Constantine, Watergate and Fistral among them.

Fistral hosts a number of surfing competitions.

Watergate Bay is a kitesurfing site, the Extreme Academy is based there.

Lusty Glaze is a base for coasteering and abseiling.

The coastal path, 10 minutes away has great cliff walks in both directions

Travel:

By car, leave the A30 at Indian Queens and follow signs to the airport. Drive past the airport and at the T junction a mile or so on turn right. Follow the road through Mawgan Porth, beach on the left. Go up the hill a few hundred yards, past Tredragon Road on the left then after 50 yards turn right at the SLOW road marking into Porth Farm Cottages.

By train, to Bodmin Parkway, then branch line to Newquay. Taxis from the station or the 556 bus route to Mawgan Porth.

By air to Newquay airport.

Distances:

Eden Project: 17 miles. Padstow: 8 miles. Newquay: 6 miles. Truro: 20 miles. Wadebridge: 13 miles. Cornwall / Newquay airport is 3 miles. Bodmin Parkway railway station is 23 miles, Newquay station is 9 miles.

Further Details:

Mawgan Porth by the beach has a well stocked grocery, deli, off-licence, newsagent, a surf hire shop, cafe/restaurant and the local pub, The Merrymoor does a range of good pub food with a garden facing the beach.

St Mawgan village is a short walk away and has a good pub, The Falcon.

Local Farm shops, Bre-Pen and Gluvian. Bre-Pen sell local farm meat, veg and cakes. Gluvian Farm, towards St Mawgan is an organic farm selling beef and vegetables.

The coastal path runs along the clifftop with stunning views: east to Bedruthan Steps is about half an hour's walk (plus a stop at the National Trust Tea shop); west to Watergate Bay takes about an hour (plus a stop at the Beach Hut overlooking the sea). Both are fantastic in all weathers.

On the coastal path you can of course go further towards Padstow and plan ahead you can simply cut in from the cliff and catch the bus back and get off outside the cottages.

Newquay has a range of amenities, banks, supermarkets and surf shops. As has Padstow with it range of restaurants and harbour, its Rick Stein's home base.

Nearest supermarkets: Morrisons at Newquay; Tesco at Wadebridge.

St Column Major is a small working town with a well stocked coop, bank, butchers and a fantastic all purpose traditional ironmongers.
