About the property

Cottage near Maentwrog, Gwynedd, Snowdonia, Wales - Set In 30 Acres Of Privately Owned Mountain Woodland, Excellent Walking From Front Door

It is a large stone cottage nestled in privately owned woodland in the hills above Maentwrog. The cottage has been sympathetically renovated and furnished. It has wooden and slate floors throughout, and a large wood burning stove in the main living area (heats radiators and hot water). It is surrounded by a large area of private garden with a table and benches for eating outside. The cottage is powered by both mains electricity and wind and solar.

The surrounding land overlooks the Vale of Ffestiniog, one of the most beautiful and best preserved wooded valleys in Britain. It is an excellent area for walking, bird watching, mountain bike riding and swimming. A swimming lake and Plas Halt request stop of the Ffestiniog Railway are both within easy walking distance.

The picturesque village of Maentwrog with two good pubs is two miles away. The cottage's location 10 miles from the sandy beaches of Harlech to the south, and 10 miles from Snowdon to the north makes it an ideal base for exploring Snowdonia.

ACCESS: the cottage is 3/4 mile from the road along a track which is in places steep, narrow and rough. It is passable to all cars (except low slung) and not suitable for unconfident drivers.

SUMMER: Hafod y Llyn cottage is also available, please see our hafod-art.co.uk website.

About Noelle Griffiths

Noelle Griffiths is an artist who paints and makes artist's books. She and her family live in Hafod y Llyn, the old gamekeeper's cottage on a 30 acre estate in the Snowdonia National Park, North Wales. Hafod Cottage (nearby but out of sight) was the old stables and dog kennels for the estate and was renovated in 1992 as a holiday cottage. Noelle teaches art part-time in Wales and Spain.

Finca Acehuche is set in a three acre olive grove in SW Spain. She and her family spent summers camping on the land before building a house in 2009.

Noelle Griffiths purchased this cottage in 1960

Why Noelle Griffiths chose Gwynedd - Snowdonia

Noelle has been living at HAFOD since 1988 when she married and moved into her husband's family home. Set in 30 acres of mountain woodland, she and her family have lovingly restored the land to its former beauty by felling conifers, re-planting with oaks and returning some land to pasture in 1991.

It is 3/4 mile from the road, along a track which passes through some beautiful scenery. It is private with no other cars apart from ours and our guests.

It has wonderful walks from the front door, as well as a request stop (5 minute walk from Hafod cottage) for the Ffestiniog Railway. A swimming lake is a ten minute walk away.

It is the perfect place to relax in nature and explore Snowdonia.

What makes this cottage unique

Hafod is very secluded, our local road is 3/4 mile away so you cannot hear or see traffic. You can walk to the local pub along paths and a track, only crossing the road once outside the pub!

Our cottage is nearby and but out of sight. Access is along a track which in places is narrow, steep and rough. Not suitable for unconfident drivers.

HAFOD is close to the sea - sandy beaches of Harlech or the beaches near Porthmadog of Borth y Gest or Criccieth - all approx 20 minute drive away. Snowdon mountain range is also approx 20 minute drive. Lots of castles, slate caverns, the Italianate village of Portmeirion are all approx 20 minutes drive.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"The lovely Hafod cottage is the perfect getaway, it offers a tranquil and secluded setting in what seems to be your own woodland. There is plenty to explore - particular highlights are the steam train with its request stop a few minutes from the cottage and a secluded lake where we spent the most relaxing afternoons. I came here as a child and returned as an adult last summer! If you want to getaway from everything, explore Wales or just chill in your own private space, then Hafod cottage is perfect!" B. Bowen

Stunning location and gorgeous cottage

  • 5 of 5

We've just returned from a week at this fantastic cottage. No wifi and no tv which was heaven! The location is simply stunning with a stream running along the bottom of the garden with the forest beyond that. The cottage had everything we needed and housed our family of 4 and 2 dogs comfortably. None of us wanted to leave, especially the dogs! If you want to get away from it all then this is the perfect place, we've already booked for next year.

Charming cottage in a wonderfully quiet setting

  • 5 of 5

We loved this cottage. It's set in lovely woods in a very quiet peaceful area but yet still near to everything you want - beach, Snowdon, shops and amenities. The cottage is very comfortable, log burner and good kitchen. Pretty and natural garden which goes straight into the woods. Walk to the steam train stop in 10 minutes - which we all loved. This a fantastic place, very highly recommended indeed. Perfect getaway.

What a wonderful holiday cottage!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I and our 10yr old dog Bucky stayed in this secluded haven just a couple of weeks ago. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Admittedly, the weather was very kind to us. We had 20C+ temperatures every day which was a bonus. We wanted a secluded location and this fitted the bill perfectly as we were surrounded by acres of wooded forest. Lovely walks for the dog. The sound of the Ffestiniog railway in the distance was so nice to hear. We took our dog on it for a 2 and a half hour trip and he loved it! Black Rock Sands in Morfa Bychan just 20 minutes away was a nice day out. It is a dog friendly beach.

It was lovely meeting the owners Richard and Noelle albeit briefly! Thanks for the welcome when we arrived and for showing us around the cottage. The wood burner had a generous supply of logs. So much so we had a fire almost every night without having to get any extra logs.

All in all a fabulous holiday! We will be back!

One of the most beautiful places we´ve ever been in holiday.

In the house you find everything you need.

You can start your walks direct from the frontdoor

NO cars no streets, just silence, nature and breathtaking views to the snowdonian mountains.

We will come back :)
