Overview

About the property

Cottage near Maentwrog, Gwynedd, Snowdonia, Wales - Set In 30 Acres Of Privately Owned Mountain Woodland, Excellent Walking From Front Door

It is a large stone cottage nestled in privately owned woodland in the hills above Maentwrog. The cottage has been sympathetically renovated and furnished. It has wooden and slate floors throughout, and a large wood burning stove in the main living area (heats radiators and hot water). It is surrounded by a large area of private garden with a table and benches for eating outside. ACCESS: the cottage is 3/4 mile from the road along a track which is in places steep, narrow and rough. It is passable to all cars (except low slung sports models) and not suitable for unconfident drivers. The railway crossing limits width/length of vehicles to standard transit van measurements. ACCESS: We are situated 3/4 mile from the main road along a track which is rough, narrow and steep in places. (Not suitable for unconfident drivers.)

The cottage is powered by both mains electricity and wind and solar.

The surrounding land overlooks the Vale of Ffestiniog, one of the most beautiful and best preserved wooded valleys in Britain. It is an excellent area for walking, bird watching, mountain bike riding and swimming. A swimming lake and Plas Halt request stop of the Ffestiniog Railway are both within easy walking distance.

The picturesque village of Maentwrog with two good pubs is two miles away. The cottage's location 10 miles from the sandy beaches of Harlech to the south, and 10 miles from Snowdon to the north makes it an ideal base for exploring Snowdonia.

About Noelle Griffiths

Noelle Griffiths is an artist who paints and makes artist's books. She and her family live in Hafod y Llyn, the old gamekeeper's cottage on a 30 acre estate in the Snowdonia National Park, North Wales. Hafod Cottage (nearby but out of sight) was the old stables and dog kennels for the estate and was renovated in 1992 as a holiday cottage. Noelle teaches art part-time in Wales and Spain.

Noelle Griffiths purchased this cottage in 1962

Why Noelle Griffiths chose Gwynedd - Snowdonia

Noelle has been living at HAFOD since 1988 when she married and moved into her husband's family home. Set in 30 acres of mountain woodland, she and her family have lovingly restored the land to its former beauty by felling conifers, re-planting with oaks and returning some land to pasture in 1991.

It is 3/4 mile from the road, along a track which passes through some beautiful scenery. It is private with no other cars apart from ours and our guests.

It has wonderful walks from the front door, as well as a request stop (5 minute walk from Hafod cottage) for the Ffestiniog Railway. A swimming lake is a ten minute walk away.

It is the perfect place to relax in nature and explore Snowdonia.

What makes this cottage unique

Hafod is very secluded, our local road is 3/4 mile away so you cannot hear or see traffic. You can walk to the local pub along paths and a track, only crossing the road once outside the pub!

Our cottage is nearby and but out of sight. Access is along a track which in places is narrow, steep and rough. Not suitable for unconfident drivers.

HAFOD is close to the sea - sandy beaches of Harlech or the beaches near Porthmadog of Borth y Gest or Criccieth - all approx 20 minute drive away. Snowdon mountain range is also approx 20 minute drive. Lots of castles, slate caverns, the Italianate village of Portmeirion are all approx 20 minutes drive.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"The lovely Hafod cottage is the perfect getaway, it offers a tranquil and secluded setting in what seems to be your own woodland. There is plenty to explore - particular highlights are the steam train with its request stop a few minutes from the cottage and a secluded lake where we spent the most relaxing afternoons. I came here as a child and returned as an adult last summer! If you want to getaway from everything, explore Wales or just chill in your own private space, then Hafod cottage is perfect!" B. Bowen

Very remote little idyll

  • 4 of 5

Cosy cottage hidden amongst gorgeous woodland nature. Wonderful quiet retreat with only the passing "toot toot" of the nearby heritage steam train breaking the silence.

Fantastic walking country, and a pub/hotel/restaturant not too far away as well.

The cottage is set on a significantly large hill, so it is a steep walk down to the pub and back! But scenery is lovely and there are many different routes to try.

The single track to the cottage is fun(!!) to drive as it meanders around the hillside, very steep and bendy in places, need a decent car and a confident driver!

Ideal for people who want to truly get away from it all.... take a weeks provisions and hide yourself away here ....

Magical!

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful place! Like being in A Midsummer Night's Dream! Swimming in the lake everyday, dinner on the terrace every night, no noise apart from the birds and the wind in the trees. Perfect! Cottage lovely and clean and very cosy. Great walks, right from the door. Dogs have never been so tired! We had such a lovely time, thank you!

WoW!!! What a great place

  • 5 of 5

We, a family of four and our dog, stayed for 4 wonderful weeks at Hafod Cottage. It was like living in an enchanted forest. Such a beautiful spot just for yourself, the meadow, the old trees, the lakes and of course the three lovely pigs. The house was cosy with the fireplace, very well equiped and so tasteful in its colours and furnitures. A homeaway from home! Thanks to Noelle and Richard for their very warm welcome!
