Overview

About the property

Townhouse in Marseillan, Herault, Languedoc-Roussillon - Central Yet Peaceful Location, Shops And Restaurants Only A Few Minutes Stroll

Situated in the centre of historic Marseillan, this light and airy 'maison de village' occupies a corner position on a quiet street just a couple of minutes walk to the old port and the Etang de Thau. Our house is the perfect base for experiencing the local culture in the restaurants, cafes and shops along the harbour side and village centre, or visiting nearby "must sees" such as Bouziques, Beziers, Meze and Pezenas. Relax on the roof terrace soaking up the sun and enjoy the local "apero" Noilly Prat or perhaps a glass of the local Picpoul de Pinet - a perfect accompaniment to the famous oysters fresh from the Etang.

Beautifully renovated with exposed beams and high quality fittings/furnishings throughout, the house offers spacious living space over 3 floors. On the ground floor there is a twin bedroom with en suite shower room. There is also a small garage and utility room, ideal for cycle storage. On the first floor is a large master bedroom with a Juliette balcony plus a modern en-suite shower room and a walk in wardrobe. The house is topped off with a sunny lounge and open plan kitchen. Large patio doors lead out on to a walled sun terrace, giving total privacy along with comfortable table and chairs and BBQ for alfresco dining. Facilities include air conditioning in all rooms, free Wifi, flat screen TV with UK and French satellite, DVD and CD players and i pod docking station. The central location of the house means that shops and restaurants are just an easy stroll away.

Marseillan is a beautiful, unspoiled village standing at the entrance of the Canal du Midi. Described by the Times newspaper as "the St Tropez of the 60's", it offers a slower way of life, fabulous harbourside restaurants and some of the best seafood that France has to offer. As well as a couple of good supermarkets, there are boulangeries, butchers, deli, greengrocers plus many stalls selling the local oysters and mussels. There is an indoor market plus a full street market every Tuesday. With such a range of amazing local produce on offer, who could resist the chance to cook up some fabulous meals? But with more than 20 restaurants just a few minutes away, you need never cook at all. Many of the restaurants line the charming harbourside and specialise in the local Languedoc cuisine and wines. Further along the Etang is Bouzigues with its oyster and mussel beds. Visit the museum to learn more about the history of the Etang and the industry now and in times gone by. Sample the oysters direct from the producers at one of the many roadside stalls or at the restaurants nestling along the shores of the lake. Marseillan is a vibrant village with lots of festivals with music and fireworks, concerts and craft markets held throughout the summer.

Beach life - Marseillan is only 5 kms from miles of sandy beaches and the clean Mediterranean sea. Walk or cycle along the Etang and Canal du Midi or pop on the local bus and you are there. MARSEILLAN PLAGE is a family friendly beach resort with lots of activities on offer as well as cafes and bars. Further along the coast you will find CAP D'AGDE with its marina filled with yachts. Enjoy a meal at one of the many restaurants that line the promenade and watch the world go by. There is also a self contained naturist village with its own nudist beach on the outskirts of Cap D'Agde. The Etang is separated from the sea by a narrow spit of land, providing some 11 kilometres of unspoilt beach running all the way to neighbouring SETE. Built like Venice with a network of canals, Sete has a famous fish market where you see the daily catch landed from the Mediterranean or why not try their local delicacy "La Tielle".

Out and About - Picturesque vineyards grow right to the edge of the village. Hire a cycle (available in the village centre) and travel the beautiful country lanes to visit local wine cellars and sample some of the traditional wines. Cycle paths also run all the way to the beach and along the spit right into the heart of Sete. A visit to the Noilly Prat winery in the centre of Marseillan, is a must. Take the guided tour and then sample the Noilly Ambre. It is served in the local bars as an apero and can only be bought in the village. Further afield, visit the historic town of PEZANAS famous for its antiques, art galleries and artisan craft shops or perhaps BEZIERS with its 13th century Cathedral and remarkable set of 7 locks on the Canal du Midi or perhaps the famous Devils Bridge at St Guilhelm le Desert. The historic cities of Carcassonne, Montpellier and Nimes are all easily reachable and the mountains are only an hours drive away.

Activities - Karting, Petanque, Tennis, Horse Riding, Bird Watching, Golf and Paintball are just some of the activities available in the area. Kite surfing, dingy sailing and windsurfing are on offer in the Etang and the Marseillan Sailing Club offers courses to beginners and experienced sailors

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a superb stay in Marseillan, thank you very much. the house was just lovely - well designed and thought out and very well equipped. I must say the air-con was a godsend as the first week in particular was very warm. Everything about the house worked for us and contributed to a fine holiday (A & J 2012)

We (party of 4) had a wonderful week in this very confortable and nicely decorated house. The location was perfect with shops and restaurants close by but it was still very quiet at night. We hired bicycles, kept them inside at night in the big utilily room, which was very convenient. We loved the house, we loved the village and we loved the beautiful countryside. We enjoyed oysters, moules and the local Picpoul wine and look forward to our next visit. (Eva 2011)

Everything was great. Each year I like it more and more and will come again next year. (JJ 2012)

We've had a really relaxing 2 weeks at your lovely house and the air-conditioning was a godsend. (HS 2012)

Lovely house, great location

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay in Marseillan and the house was perfectly located for us. Five minutes walk and you're in the town centre or on the very pretty quay with lots of choices for bars/ restaurants. Also, it's in a great spot for exploring the local area. The house itself was very clean, tastefully decorated and had everything we needed. The rooftop terrace was a real bonus. Just great.

Super property!

Lovely house with every home away from home comfort you could want. The owners were only an email away if we had any questions re the property. The location was very central but in a nice quiet street. Would highly recommend.

Authentic French property in charming village.

  • 4 of 5

We stayed in The Griffiths' house in Marseillan for 5 weeks and at the end of our stay we would have loved to stay longer. The house provided exactly what we had hoped for and was in a great location as we could walk or cycle anywhere we wanted to go.

We loved the top floor living space with roof terrace and spent hours in the evening watching swifts shooting around, then the stars coming out.

The ground floor bedroom was a bit scruffy and basic but spotlessly clean with comfy beds. The garage/ utility space seems to be ripe for change which would hopefully enhance the ground floor space. First floor bedroom was really spacious and comfortable.

We did really enjoy the experience of living in this property for 5 weeks and would certainly return.

French style house

  • 4 of 5

We stayed for the weekend, wished we could have stayed longer. Marseillan is a wonderful town, low key & with loads of French charm. Superb restaurants, food & service excellent.

The house was very clean & well equipped, we ate out for the three nights of our stay, however, everything was there If we had decided to cook for ourselves. It was conveniently situated, a short walk through the narrow streets to shops, restaurants a harbour.

As is typical with some French townhouses the stairs were quite steep, although not a problem for us.
