About Barry and Joanna

The owners live unobtrusively in the adjacent property. We are there to answer questions and provide assistance if needed. We also provide a baby-sitting service. There are two friendly dogs and a cat in residence!

Paul Zak and family stayed in 2011 and said " We had a truly wonderful week-the house was extremely comfortable, and was cool even on the hottest days The pool was big enough for a real swim. The owners couldn't have been more helpful and did everything to make sure our stay went smoothly. Finca El Capitan Alta has everything you can need for a really great holiday, very highly recommended ".

John, Yvonne and family stayed in 2012 and said "Many thanks for a lovely week at Gaucin. The villa, pool, sunshine and beautiful surroundings were all perfect"

Barry and Joanna purchased this villa in 2000

Why Barry and Joanna chose Gaucín

The Genal valley, which is where we are located - the river is approx half a kilometre away as the crow flies - is a well known bird watching centre, being on the migration route from/to Africa. The house is also overlooked by the Crestalina, a mountain that is famous for nesting eagles. Vultures also abound. In all, the whole area is a bird lovers paradise! Talking of paradise, this applies to the walking fraternity as well. It is possible to walk from the house in the surrounding countryside and hills or along the river. For the more ambitious there are organised walks covering the whole area to Ronda on one side to Jimena on the other.

What makes this villa unique

The River Genal is about 1 km away. In spanish terms a relatively substantial river. Great for walking , bird life and a swim for the young.!

Guestbook comments from the owner

A review from Thelma of London who stayed in September 2010 - ¨Barry and Jo live in the adjoining property. They were there if we needed anything, otherwise we were hardly aware of them. The kitchen is better equipped than mine..We had exclusive use of the pool particularly enjoying BBQïng by it at night, sitting gazing at the stars and the glittering lights of Gaucin,on a mountain in the distance."

Charlotte who was looking for a local property to buy said " I don´t think we want to leave this place - and to look for somewhere after being here is setting impossibly high standards ". Boris from Holland was so impressed with the location, he made the following unsolicited comment "...sitting outside last night , we thought that this place is so beautiful, it doesn´t matter if tomorrow never comes ! " You can´t say more than that !

El capitan Alto

  • 5 of 5

The drive to the house was stunning, with views of the mountains and valleys and tiny villages to explore. We arrived at Jo and Barry's beautiful home and were warmly greeted like old friends. Inside they had stocked the fridge with essentials and a few ice cool treats which we drank round the pool.. perfect after a long day travelling. The house and its stunning scenery has a magical quality, so quiet and still that I simply fell in love with. We spent days lounging around the pool ( a good size to swim), peppered with occasional games of darts, badminton and table tennis - then we stoked up the BBQ for lunch - again - perfect. In the evenings we drove to villages and were charmed by the friendliness and generosity of the locals. The real magic happens at night though, the crystal clear mountain skies show you every star constellation imaginable.

Jo and Barry have created a wonderful place to relax and unwind, they are charming and discreet - their two little helpers in the form of the sweetest little dog called Puddles and a talkative puss called Woody ....nearly broke my heart to leave! We are planning our next trip as I type...x

Just Go...!

Fantastic holiday in stunning countryside!

  • 5 of 5

We have just had a most wonderful holiday at this property. The villa is in the most stunning position with 360 degree views of the mountains with the white village of gaucin perched on the top. The house is lovely. Very clean and well equipped with everything we needed and beautifully furnished. The outside area around the pool is fantastic with various seating areas and a huge shady pergola under which we enjoyed many meals, not to mention the bar!! Our children loved the pool, diving board and the table tennis table.

We spent a lot of time relaxing at the villa but also had some lovely meals out in gaucin and at a fantastic beach bar. We also travelled down to tarifa on the coast which the kids loved - fantastic waves for body boarding and surfing and an amazing whale and dolphin watching trip!!

Lastly Barry and Jo (the owners) were so friendly and helpful in recommending places to eat and day trips if we needed them to but other than that we did not see them. You would not know that they live on site.

I would definately recommend this villa and we will return!

Fabulous Villa

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a fabulous break at Finca el Capitan Alta. Barry and Jo could not have been more welcoming or helpful but also let us do our own thing so that we truly felt we had the place entirely to ourselves. However they were always on hand if we needed anything.

The finca is stunning and very well equipped with all we needed. We were travelling with our small daughter and Barry and Jo had all the baby paraphernalia we needed! The villa is traditional Spanish style but immaculately clean and well maintained. There was everything we needed including towels, toiletries and plenty of kitchenware and outdoor cooking equipment. On arrival we were greeted with a basket of fruit freshly picked from their garden which was lovely. Barry and Jo even did a shop for us so that we had the essentials for our arrival!

The local area is stunning and Gaucin has a small selection of shops and restaurants, however we were so relaxed and comfortable in the villa that we didn't venture far! Although Ronda is less than an hours drive away and well worth a visit.

I would thoroughly recommend the area and the villa to anyone looking for a relaxing enjoyable stay in Andulucia.

A great holiday place

  • 5 of 5

Thank you Barry and Jo for making our stay so easy. The property was lovely - spread over several areas so that we could all do different things (teenage girls plus a 10 year old girl and their mums). Having a larger pool and a diving board was a huge bonus - we used it all the time.

The house was lovely and clean, and having some stand-by food and goodies on our arrival was very thoughtful and went beyond what we have experienced in the past in other stays in Spain. Anything that we needed was always quickly sorted out (not that we needed much beyond what was provided). It was lovely to be visited by the friendly dogs too!

We tended to stay close to the house (and the pool!), but the property was close enough to other places (Ronda, Malaga) for our needs.

Barry and Jo were close by when we needed them (for advice on places to eat etc) but we felt that we had the place to ourselves as much as we wanted. Once again, thank you for providing us with a lovely home from home!!!

Above all,

Wonderful place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful ten days at Barry and Jo's property. Fantastic location, within easy reach of Gaucin and the surrounding villages, as well as being within comfortable striking distance of the coast.

The property was extremely comfortable and well looked after. The outside areas were great, with a fantastic pool and lovely shady areas to relax in when it got really hot. Barry and Jo were great hosts, welcoming and helpful but also let us get on with our holiday!

The property and the surrounding area provided us, with our three children plenty to do. We would recommend it to anyone looking for a great property in a beautiful location.

Special interest holidays:

Bird watching is justifiably very popular locally and outings can be arranged with experts.Eagles, Vultures and even Golden Orioles , which sing in the nearby Genal Valley are frequently spotted. THIS IS A BIRD-WATCHERS PARADISE !! The exceptional habitat which attracts many species of moths, includes an abundance of wild flowers in the spring. Three species of Hawkmoths have been spotted , which enjoy the wild orchids that grow on the property.

There are caves at Cueva La Pilieta with cave paintings , stalactites etc. Casares, 8 minutes away, is rich in Roman and Moorish history , whilst Baelio Claudia near Bolonia has a superb Roman city right next to the beautiful beach. On the beach there are several excellent fish restaurants where you can enjoy lunch and views over the coast and sea.

Horse riding is nearby in beautiful countryside and can be arranged by the hour or by the day.

The nearest beach is at Sabanillas which is about 20 mins by car and has sandy and rocky areas. Thre are tremendous beach bars selling excellent local fish. The Port of Duqueza is worth a visit. Lots of boats bobbing in a very pretty marina. Sotogrande is 30 mins away. It has a lovely marina with large yachts as this is a very sophisticated smart playground for the rich . It also has polo fields - a good day out. Marbella and Puerto Banus are 40 mins drive and need no introduction !

Malaga Airport is just over an hour´s drive away and Gibraltar 40 minutes. We are also one and a half hours drive from Jerez airport. Car hire companies are located at each of the airports. Unless you are happy to be confined to the house for the duration of your stay ( we are happy to shop for you ! ) a car is essential. Jerez, Granada, Cadiz, Cordoba and Seville are all within 2 - 3 hrs driving distance for a day trip.

It is possible to travel by train from London to Gaucin station !! ´

Nearest shops are in Gaucin which is 8 kms away. There is one supermarket - small but adequate - and lots of local grocers. For greater choice the coast has an abundance of shops and supermarkets .

Gaucin has excellent tapas bars and restaurants dotted around its pretty streets and in adjacent villages.

The train journey from El Colmenar (Gaucin station) to Ronda is rated as one of the top 10 train journeys in Europe ;break the journey at Molino del Santo at Benaojan, for lunch .Truly lovely.

Further Details:

There are two banks in Gaucin both with cash machines. A health centre is located in Gaucin in case of emergencies. Most houses charge extra for logs and electricity during the winter - we don't - they are included in the rental price! The sitting room is heated by an effective wood burner and there are heaters in all bedrooms. Winter weather is, in the main, lovely with tanning sunshine - but it does rain! Be guided by the weather forecast and risk booking late which is viable out of high season when flights are also reasonably priced.

Every Easter Sunday, Gaucin entertains with the Torro del Cuerdo which involves bulls being let loose to run through the streets, chasing anybody who is daring enough to think they can outpace them! One of the few villages in Spain still to continue this "sport". If you want to go to a bullfight , Ronda boasts the oldest bullring in Spain. Even if bullfighting is not for you, Ronda is a must to visit. It is approx 1 hours drive from the villa.

August is feria ( festival) time in the white villages. Very noisy and busy, they can go on all night - fun if you are young but not conducive to a good nights sleep if you are staying in the village ! The famous historic towns of Seville ("2 hours drive), Jerez ( 75 mins ), Cadiz ( 90 mins), Cordoba ( 2 hours) and Granada ( 3 hours ) are all within easy reach for a day trip. Driving in this part of Spain is a delight compared with the U.K. Open roads and hardly any traffic (with the exception of the Marbella area).

WALKING It is sublime countryside for the keen and casual walker. June and September ( Not high season prices !!) are ideal . Temperature are lovely and no extreme and , in June, wild flowers and a green terain. The house contains detailed routes around Gaucvin and Ronda ares
