We stayed with Denise and Lawrence first as Bed and Breakfast whilst we began the search for a new home in France. They could not have been more helpful, kind or caring. Nothing was too much trouble. We ended up transferring over to the Gite and staying for about six months. We really got to know them as people in their own right. Denise is incredible, always kind and willing to help in any way possible. Equally so, Lawrence, who had an incredible sense of humour, was always there ready to to step in whenever help was needed.

Brian and myself were amazed how much knowledge they had about what was going on locally for tourists and the many places of interest and history that surrounded their area. Sometimes unsure how to reach places we wanted to see, Denise would come along and be our guide.

The food was excellent, the company perfect, the gardens and surrounding area have to be experienced to appreciate them. We have no hesitation on recommending them and go back on a regular basis to enjoy their company and excellent quisine

Everything was spotless and extremely well maintained. Laurence has a great sense of humour and Denise is a great cook. They pointed us in the direction of things to do when we were unsure. Pity we didn't have longer and cant wait till we can get the chance to go back. Such a peaceful area. Would highly recommend. Came home very relaxed with fully recharged batteries.

Little gem

  • 4 of 5

What a little gem we found. Accommodation spotless and well equipped. Hosts friendly but discreet, helpful and knowledgeable about the local area, which meant we didn't waste precious holiday time going to the wrong place on the wrong day! After a day out it was great to BBQ in the lovely garden. We'll be back next year for a longer stay. There is so much to see in the area. Loved it!

Car: recommended

Sille-le-Guillaume, 50 mins - lake and artificial beach set in over 3000 ha forest. Normandy Beaches, 2 hrs - For WW2 enthusiasts. Mont St. Michel, 2 hrs - second most visited place in France after the Eiffel Tower. St Malo. 1 hr - The history of this walled, maritime town goes back to the Celtic. This town boats the holiday resort of Dinard, fabulous restaurants and shops and last but not least, amazing clean beaches for which Saint Malo is justifiably famous.

Own transport essential for this countryside location. Eurotunnel - Dover to Calais 35 mins. 4 hr drive, mostly motorway. Ferries - Dover to Calais approx 4 hour drive, mostly motorway. Dover to Boulogne - approx 4 hour drive, mostly motorway. Newhaven to Dieppe 3 hours drive from Dieppe but longer crossing. Portsmouth to either Caen or Le Havre 2 hour drive.

Airports - Cheapest - Usually Ryanair to Dinard. Rennes 1 hr 20 mins hours drive. Dinard, Nantes, Tours 2 hour drive.

Just 2km away from the La Rouillardays Holiday Cottage is the quaint town of Juvigné, aptly named the "Village of Flowers", after its floral displays, which set the community ablaze with colour during the summer months. Quaint local shops, bars and restaurants do little to disturb the tranquillity of pastoral Juvigne, offering its visitors an authentic taste of French life and culture. Also available in Juvigné: Bank and cash point, post office, tourist information office, local museum.

Further Details:

There are many local restaurants and supermarkets within 10min driving distance. Wine Tasting - Although it is possible to taste and buy most French wine varieties in towns and cities throughout the country, a tour of the Loire Valley will find you hard-pressed to find another singular area filled with as much diversity and choice for connoisseurs.

Some other places of interest: Vitre (This medieval city, residence of cobbled walkways, barony, and olde worlde enchantment, is a destination back in time, from timber-framed 15th century porch houses, the castle of the long-ago Vitre Barons, the Gothic Notre Dame and neo-Romanesque Saint Martin churches, to the Sacred Art exhibition and rural heritage museum. - 25 mins), Laval (with its chic store fronts and swish street cafes, Laval has a decidedly voguish spirit, but labelled Ville d'Art et d'Histoire, the town of Laval is also one rich in history, the setting of many a brave battle, creating an epic heritage marked by the Hundred Years War (1337 - 1453), the Great War (1914 - 1918), and the Second World War (1936-1945). - 30mins), Jublians(A major historical site, famous because of its ancient beginnings as a Roman city. A church that stands upon the central point of the tiny city is in fact a museum. - 40mins), St Suzanne(Sainte Suzanne is another medieval city, sequestered from the surrounding modernity by its bordering farmlands. Very much tourist-centric, the entire city is decidedly museum-esque in character, and the streets are a-bustle with sight-seers - 50mins) St Malo, Mont St. Michel and Normandy are a must-see for the epic adventurer.
