About Gary & Denise Stephens

After many visits over many years to France, it was perhaps fate that we would move here. Many people dream of living the dream, Denise and I decided to follow ours. And jumped in with both feet. We believe we have found our little piece of heaven here in the Cantal, a lovely old farmhouse with two superb gites, a large swimming pool, and the most delightful views over the countryside you could possibly ask for. Denise and I both like to explore and we are centrally placed to reach the Med, Spain and even Italy. I love the garden and to try to play my guitar, while Denise loves art and is eager to re-ignite her passion for painting. We both have grown up children back in the UK who love to visit, just hr from Rodez. we love where we live and look forward to it bewitching all our guests.

Gary & Denise Stephens purchased this apartment in 2010

Why Gary & Denise Stephens chose Junhac

One minute high on the mountain tops then down again in the valleys and never far from cascading streams and yet beautiful meadows and forests all around. Deep rusty brown Salers Cattle graze and the new roads through the hills and lack of traffic on the roads make this area a pleasure to drive in. Experience the bustle of the local markets and fetes. The beautiful warm (30°) plus summers, balmy evenings, fresh clear clean air, peace and quiet and what is becoming rare indeed in the UK, lots and lots of space. both the spring and autumns vibrant colours make you just stop and catch your breath. And then in winter, you can still sit and eat outside and enjoy alpine blue skies with bright sunshine and the most spectacular sunsets. It makes this truly a special region all year round.

What makes this apartment unique

Gites one and two both benefit from being next to the pool with glorious views over uninterrupted countryside. Inside there are all the mod cons you should need which include washing machines, dishwashers microwaves, over and above the equipment that you would expect to have normally. There is a games room underneath where you can enjoy a game of darts or ping pong on the full sized table tennis table. There is space to play Boule or to just kick back and laze by the pool. Both gites have a TV (BBC FREESAT) with DVD , if you wish to have a night in there are barbecues and the local good red wine, MARCILLAC is certainly worth sampling. we are only 3km from Montsalvy, where you have all types of shop and the nearest large town is Aurillac which is only 25 mins away.

Outside: An 11x5.5m swimming pool is to be found adjacent to the gites with parasols and sun loungers. There is also games room with table tennis and darts. The views are beautiful all around. The area is known as the chataigneraie which comes from the sweet chestnut trees which were grown in the middle ages to form a staple diet in that time and there are many examples of its uses in the local surroundings. Birds including various tits and finches jays, woodpeckers, (green and spotted) nuthatches and buzzards circling on the thermals are all common visitors here. If you are quiet you can sometimes see the deer which live in the woods and if you are really lucky a wild boar. Or perhaps as you doze in the sun you may spy the beautiful red squirrels with their almost jet black tails helping themselves to the last of your barbecue tit bits.

We had two fantastic weeks at this gite. Gary and Denise were great hosts - very attentive but never intrusive. They were full of local information and suggestions for things to do and see. The accomodation was spotlessly clean and very well equipped.

Our two teenagers were fully occupied with the great pool and thoroughly enjoyed the kayaking on the Lot.

The area is superb for road cycling with quiet - and very hilly - roads.

I would recommend this accomodation.

Gary and Denise have created a lovely place to stay. It's all been carefully put together and is very well-maintained. We enjoyed exploring the area, and the kids loved the pool and games room.

With two small kids, it's not easy to get any peace and quiet, but Le Coin Perdu is truly that - a beautiful tranquil place to really get away from it all. Fantastically kitted out by Gary and Denise, the cottage sits in a part of France that's blissfully unaffected by tourism. From unspoilt medieval villages, to dramatic snow-capped mountains and gorgeous sunlight (and buckets full of steak and red wine), there's an amazing amount to discover. We loved it.

We love this place! This was our second visit, and once again Gary and Denise pulled out all the stops to ensure that everything was ready and well presented. The gites are clean and well maintained. The pool (which was cleaned regularly) and games room kept us and our teenagers entertained when we weren't out and about exploring mountains, valleys and local towns. You can sit at the pool side and watch birds of prey soaring over the valley. The pool is big enough for a decent swim, and deep enough to jump and dive into.

This is a lovely corner of France, not as well known as places like the Dordogne, but well worth a visit. There are peaks rising to nearly 2,000m north of Aurillac, some of which are very accessible, either by road, with a relatively short final climb, or in the case of Plomb du Cantal, via cable car. There is a choice of velorails near Mauriac, where you can pedal your own train. Canoeing is available on the Lot near by, but you could also sit back and watch the world go by, either by the pool or in a bar or cafe at one of the local towns and villages.

This gite is excellent!

Special interest holidays:

We have not provided any special interest breaks as yet.

But if you want to hold a writing or art seminar here or maybe a retreat week then please contact us with your requirements. Its a very paintable area and peace for writing or just taking time out.

Cyclist love this area as it is indeed very challenging, with the tour de France often going through the area.

kayaking on the river Lot.

Great for walkers.

We held a Karate camp here as there is so much to challenge the active person with a new village hall, large enough to accommodate a squad for training.

Centrally located we are only 2hrs 30 mins from the Mediterranean at Montpellier. If you are here for two weeks why not make an early start one day do the beach thing then return and spend the next lazing by the pool.

Stansted to Rodez 1hr 30min flight then 1hr by road to Lagarde. Toulouse and Montpellier all between 2.30 to3hrs away.

By car it is around 12 hrs from Calais it is doable in a day, but most of our guests stop over en route, around Orleans. Eurostar runs between London Paris, then take SNCF to Aurillac 32 km away we could then arrange to collect from there.

Our local village is Junhac 2km away a pretty little village with two bars. Montsalvy is a bigger town, with all amenities 3.5km away.

The county town is Aurillac which is a nice little university town lots of well behaved youngsters give a vibrant feel. It is the centre for umbrella making in France. Entraygues is just across the border in the Aveyron about 20 min from us a pleasant little village on the river. Figeac is only 20 miles away in the Dordogne and has a bustling market on Saturdays

Further Details:

There is a bank in Montsalvy and a very nice restaurant at the Auberge Fluerie, not cheap but excellent. or why not stop in one of the numerous little restaurants for the menu de jour for about 11 euros great value some include the wine. There is a market on Thursday, we have charcouteries and boulongeries there is also a spa just as you leave town. There are two garages. Also there is a library which has internet, and a Doctors surgery. In Aurillac there are the major supermarkets and anything you should require during the course of your stay. There is a Car Rallye in Marcillac during March but we have only seen the posters. There are miles and miles of roads for jogging or cycling, and the French have a love of this sport and even in the depths of winter you will see them of all ages up an down the roads in fact the Tour De France passes close by. Mountain climbing is possible and hill walking and mountain biking are all popular. Horse riding, fishing and kyaking are all possible along the miles of waterways, sitting in cafes and watching the world go by is a favourite pass time here. of course skiing snow boarding and snow walking are common in the winter.
