About the property

House near Mirepoix and Carcassone, Languedoc vineyards, Lac du Montbel swimming, boating, fishing. Ruins, hiking, scenic drives and walks.

The seasons:

Summer - temperatures mid 20s to high 30s, no humidity. Sunflowers everywhere. Go to the lake for a swim. Perfect for sipping my favourite rose' and relaxing in the garden.

Autumn - leaves turning gold on the grapevines, lovely warm days with cool evenings perfect for getting the fireplace going, with a nice glass of red wine.

Spring - probably my favourite time of year, though weather can be unpredictable, but if it cools it's a good excuse to get the fireplace going. Typically bright blue skies, snow capped mountains, wildflowers and green green green rolling hills. Just stunning. Sipping white wines with the promise of summer around the corner.

Winter - cold and sometimes snowy, bright blue skies, snow on the mountains and 40 minutes to ski resort and Andorra. Perfect Bordeaux sipping weather.

Our village house has been renovated and modernised as a comfortable home for entertaining and relaxing. With very thick walls, the house stays comfortable on even the hottest days and the fireplace in the living room provides a cosy gathering place on chilly evenings. The kitchen/dining room is the centre of activity and opens on to the terrace for alfresco dining and easy access to the barbecue corner. The garden is enclosed by tall crumbly stone walls giving it lots of character and privacy. The bedrooms are comfortable and quiet and lovely to wake to the sound of birds in the garden or the soft chiming of the village church bells. Leran is 10 minutes from Mirepoix, a charming medieval town, and about 30 minutes from Carcassonne which is one of the must sees in the area. There is a lot to do in the area from swimming, sailing, canoeing and horseback riding at Lac du Montbel; or hiking and exploring the Cathar ruins and towns - and white water rafting and skiing close by.

About Susan

I live in London which I really enjoy, but when I need a break from my busy job I spend my holidays in France, where I have really fallen in love with the Ariege and Languedoc. I love to cook and entertain, so really enjoy it when my friends come down and we spend most of the time outside in the summer or around the cosy fire in the cold months, enjoying the food and wine of the area.

Susan purchased this house in 2008

Why Susan chose Léran

I discovered the Ariege almost by accident when visiting the Aude and Carcassonne. Once I did it was a clear winner with its soft rolling countryside with fields of golden wheat and sunflowers in the summer, and the snow-capped Pyrenees gracing every view in the winter and spring. Autumn sees the all the leaves turning including the Virginia Creeper in the garden and the vineyards in the fields just over the border near Limoux. The house is in a quiet village with the necessary boulangerie and cafe, but close enough to anything else you might want or need. Mirepoix's Monday market mustn't be missed. Foix and Carcassonne are must sees. Skiing in Mont D'Olmes is only 40 minutes away, and if you fancy a hike, Chateau Montsegur is 20 minutes away.

What makes this house unique

From my guests:

"We had a lovely time in your beautiful house and enjoyed outdoor breakfasts and dinners in the garden which you must have spent a lot of time in to make it such a haven of calm and beauty."

"Just to let you know we had a great time staying in your lovely house, and will not hesitate to recommend it to friends coming to France. It was a great base for exploring the surrounding area. (as well as having the best shower in 8 weeks!)"

"The house was perfect and exceeded all our expectations - I would recommend it to anyone without hesitation and in fact you will be having my cousin in September."

"We have just left Leran - what a lovely place and area. The house was perfect. We had a great week and feel like there are so many things that we didn't get a chance to do."

Guestbook comments from the owner

From one of my guests:

Thank you Susan - we had a lovely time in your beautiful house and enjoyed outdoor breakfasts and dinners in the garden which you must have spent a lot of time in to make it such a haven of calm and beauty. We loved the village with its bakery and cafe. We went for walks and bicycled to the lake where we had a nice lunch at the cafe. We visited the "bastides" and since we are interested in

history it was fascinating to follow in the paths of the "cathars". We really enjoyed our stay and would like to come back some time."

Car: necessary

The Mediterranean beaches (Narbonne, Perpignan, Coulliere) are about 2 hours east of Leran and the Atlantic beaches (Biarritz, Arascon) are about 2 hours west of Leran.

Carcassone - about 30-40 minutes drive from Leran.

Toulouse Blagnac - about 60-75 minutes drive from Leran.

Palmiers or Foix - are the closest train station with connections to Toulouse, about 30 minutes drive from Leran.

You will definitely need a car and they can be rented from both airports and locally in Laroque D'Olmes.

Carcassone, 30 mins, a must see Cathar stronghold with much history.

The Corbieres/Limoux, 30 mins, a great drive with vineyards for wine tasting/buying. Andorra, a 90 min beautiful mountain drive to duty free shopping, with the ruin of Chateau Montsegur on the way.

Foix, the capital of the Ariege has a beautiful castle and a stunning light/music festival in July.

Further Details:

Leran is a small village 5 minutes from Lac du Montbel with swimming, sailing, horseback riding, bicycling, canoeing, and cafe available.

In Leran there is a boulangerie 5 doors down from the house, and a small bar/cafe, Le Rendezvous, with very good food and entertainment with both English and French spoken. Leran has a medieval festival in August and July through August every Friday night there is a fun street party with food, drink, music, and dancing attended by both french and expat locals and visitors. The Tour de France goes right by in July!

Mirepoix, 10 mins, is a beautiful medieval village with shops, cafes, supermarkets, petrol station, and a fabulous farmers market on Mondays and a smaller one on Thursdays.

Lavalanet, 10 mins, shops, cafes, petrol, a small hospital; and a big farmers market on Fridays.

No shops or supermarkets are open on Sundays except the occasional boulangerie, however, restaurants and cafes are open. Monday is variable, some places open, some don't.

Near Leran on the main road is a Go-karting place.

Brocante: there are several small brocante in Mirepoix, a large one on the way out of Mirepoix towards Palmiers; there is a large one past the hospital in Lavalanet; there is a large one in Palmiers past the Le Clerc supermarket.

Palmiers has a selection of shops at the roundabout where the MacDonalds is, and also in the centreville.
