About the property

Gite in Gironde, St.Emilion, Aquitaine, Dordogne, France - Charming Property Close To The Vineyards Of St.Emilion

Welcome to La Maison de la Riviere on the leafy banks of the Dordogne, just outside the market town of Castillon la Bataille, between the airports of Bordeaux and Bergerac. With its own entrance and private garden overlooking the river the two storey, self-contained gite has been recently renovated but retains much of its original charm and character with exposed limestone walls and oak beams. Enjoy a swim in the pool or just relax with a glass of wine in the shade of a 100 year old wisteria tree while you watch white swans drift past on the beautiful Dordogne river. Dine at a charming restaurant just a 2 minute stroll away with great food and local wines. We are a short bike ride to a lake with a safe sandy beach, water activities and jet skis. Fishing, horse riding and canoeing can also be found nearby.

Peaceful and relaxing by the bank of the Dordogne

  • 5 of 5

Excellent relaxing stay for four of us with a lovely property well located. The outside area was particularly welcome with space to sit or eat under the veranda whatever the weather. We were easily able to self-cater for all the time we were there, with adequate facilities. Town is quick drive, OK cycle but long walk away.

Gorgeous gite on the Dordogne

  • 5 of 5

This is such a beautiful gite on the pecaeful Dordogne river. Basil and Julie, the owners, have done a wonderful job creating a vert tastfully furnished little bite, right on the river. The pool was lovely and the house and all areas were spotlessly clean. The compact kitchen has all you need and it was nice to make use of the BBQ.

We went to the La Table Rouge local restaurant that offers a short but freshly cooked menu which was greatand also La Plage just under the stone bridge in town. We enjoyed the Monday morning market at Castillon and there was also a well stocked intermarche in town.

We ventured out to St Emilion which was very pretty and did the monolthic church tour underground which was worthwhile and a great resite from the searing 37 degree heat that day!

We also had another day out at Bergerac - pretty old town and then a river boat trip around the old port was nice.

There is a great hypermarket Le Clerc about 30 minutes away which has a great choice of food.

We had a lovely holiday here at La Maison de la Riveriere and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to others ho are looking for a relaxing break.

Marvellous gite

  • 5 of 5

The gite exceeded all expectations. Set on the banks of the beautiful Dordogne river, it is decorated and equipped to a high standard. It has it's own peaceful, sunny, secluded garden and the use of a lovely pool and sunbathing area. The owners are always on hand but never intrusive. They provide a high standard of service. Close to the towns of Castillon and St Emilion it is set amoungst beautiful countryside with little traffic and where you can walk or cycle safely for miles enjoying the scenery. 50m along the road is a delightful restaurant La Table Rouge handy for the evenings when you don't want to use the BBQ.There is always a delightful French market to be found in a town nearby and plenty of chateaux for visiting and wine tasting.

This is a wonderful part of France to visit and we definitely felt priviledged to stay at Basil and Julie's gite.

just perfect

  • 5 of 5

Stayed here for a week whilst on a business trip. Arrived Sunday and came armed with a few essentials such as milk, teabags salt and pepper etc. No need, all essentials supplied as well as a bottle of Rose and a lovely welcome note.

The property, although attached to the house, is very private, beautifully decorated, well equipped and spotless and being March, the power shower, open fire and central heating were fully appreciated.

Although I was there on business and the 18mbps broadband and the proximity to Bordeaux and Bergerac were essential, I managed to get my French kick too: from the mug of tea on the terrace at sunrise, watching the wildlife come to life on the river; to the glass of wine at sunset, before heading out for a delicious meal nearby.

Oh, and the owners are charming too!

Thank you both

From the moment we arrived onto this beautifully appointed property along the wonderful Dordogne river, we were impressed.

The immaculate grounds. The stunning pool area. And a warm & friendly welcome from the owners (Julie & Basil) who were the ultimate hosts.

They gave us lots of great advice on local restaurants and went out of their way to make our stay very memorable.

My wife and I stayed in one of the two newly renovated B&B rooms which was beautifully decorated with a romantic French style.

The bathroom was also fantastic with quality fixtures and products.

The breakfast was another great experience and Basil makes meanest omelette in town. You notice the attention to detail, the style and class everywhere and for us it was perfect.

There's lots to do, whether it's a trip to the local markets, a vineyard tour and tasting or a visit to the stunning nearby town of Saint-Emilion.

I can not stop telling all my friends what a great place La Maison de la Rivière is, and If anyone was heading in that direction I would highly recommend they make a reservation with these guys. Top notch Julie & Basil.

La Maison de la Riviere

  • 5 of 5

Highly recommended. The accommodation is superb - very stylish and modern. The surrounding area is absolutely stunning, the villlages and countryside are just amazing! We really enjoyed going on wonderful day trips to the region's historical attractions, restaurants and local markets (and there is plenty on offer!), and then being able to come back and relax by the pool at La Maison or enjoy a walk by the river, in a peaceful and private country setting. The hosts are wonderful. Julie and Basil make sure you are very well looked after, and go out of their way to create a wonderful experience for their guests. I would definitely return on my next trip to France.

La Table Rouge
Car: recommended

Lac du Cadie is a few minutes away by car and has an excellent large sandy beach with safe swimming, water activities, jet skis, fishing and a bar/restaurant. The Atlantic coast is a 90 minute drive away where, along with endless sandy beaches, you will find Arcachon (famous for its delicious oysters), Europe's largest sand dune the Dune de Pyla and the chic resort of Cap Ferret.

We are situated approximately one hours scenic drive from both Bordeaux and Bergerac airports. Car hire is available from both airports. Castillon la Bataille also has a train station. Car essential.

Further Details:

Local restaurant La Table Rouge is a 2 minute stroll along the river, boasting great food and a superb local wine list. A two minute drive away La Plage is an open air restaurant where everything is cooked over a wood fired grill. The market town of Castillon la Bataille is just across the river and was the site of the end of the 100 year war in 1453. It has a typically French street market on Monday, restaurants, boulangeries, banks, pharmacies, doctors and supermarkets.

The stunning medieval village of St Emilion is just 12km away, whose architecture and surrounding vineyards are part of the World Heritage of UNESCO. With narrow cobbled streets, limestone churches and underground caves, the best way to visit is on foot (but leave your high-heels in the car!). Fabulous restaurants and wine shops in abundance.

Bordeaux is the cosmopolitan capital of Aquitaine, with theatres, designer shopping (including the longest pedestrian shopping street in Europe), museums, galleries and opera house and the new tramway system makes it easy to visit and get around.

Petrus, Ausone and Cheval Blanc are some of the best known vineyards in this part of the Gironde, but so many others are also worth a stop-over. The best way to discover this area is through its many trails that have been plotted by the different tourist offices. Don’t miss the weekly markets in Libourne or Sainte-Foy-la-Grande which are some of the best in the area.
