About alison

I am a dentist and have a well respected practice in north Northumberland.I now live between Paris and the south of France. I have three adult children, who love the house and area as much as I do! Mas des Anges is very much a family home and we have had many parties and family gatherings here over the years. My daughter was married here 5 years ago and my other daughter was married here - with a marquee in the garden in August 2015 so it holds many special memories. The house is very lovely with views across the surrounding garrigue with amazing tranquillity and light. We are a family very interested in art, film and music. The library has an interesting collection of contemporary art books and an eclectic mix of DVDs in French and English. We are also foodies so lots of recipe books! my daughter now has a small baby so the house is well equipped with baby stuff !

alison purchased this villa in 2003

Why alison chose Paradou

We are true Francophiles and had holidayed for many years in this area and other parts of the south of France. This area kept drawing us back. It is magical! there are many beautiful places to visit for a true flavour of Provence. The local markets bustling with colour and vibrancy, amazing little restaurants both casual and smart with excellent choice and standard. The village of Maussane is lively and chic with lots of lovely little shops and a weekly food and souvenir market. It is an area of outstanding natural beauty and deservedly has a reputation of attracting artists and writers. There are many festivals throughout the summer celebrating local culture. Luckily the area is still unspoilt! We found the house nestling in the hills of the Alpilles completely tranquil and bathed in sunlight. It charmed us immediately ! The views are uninterrupted countryside with sheep and olive trees- quintessential rural Provence. yet everything you need - restaurants , food markets, charming village square and gorgeous little shops are all within a 5 minute drive. The garden is all enclosed and a complete delight. the house has thick old stone walls so is cool in the summer though we have installed air conditioning this year in the bedrooms and a wood burnering stove in the big fireplace in the salon in the cooler winter months. Life is easy here. The kitchen is well stocked with appliances, pans etc for proper cooking and there is a large gas barbecue for those hot days when everyone wants to eat outside. in addition there is a very efficient pizza oven in the pool house with all necessary tools. All the rooms are spacious- theres not one cramped, tiny bedroom and all bathrooms are modern and work well ! we stayed in many houses previously where there was always a compromise but this house suits everyone! we arrive with kids, friends and oldies and all relax immediately. Its an all season house.Theres plenty of space to be together or retreat so life is easy here.

What makes this villa unique

Peace tranquillity and beauty. The garden is very beautiful and big with amazing views. The house is spacious and cool with beamed ceilings and an enormous fireplace. We love the easy open plan way that the rooms flow and the complete privacy of all bedrooms having their own generous bathrooms . There is no small bedroom so everyone has lots of space . The pool is large, salt water system and alarmed with stone terraces around. This space works so well for families or large groups. I love that it is so near to all the lovely villages around but feels completely in the countryside with no noise or distractions. We have decorated the house to suit this comfortable ambiance so that it feels modern but cosy and very comfortable. All the beds are incredibly comfortable good quality with excellent bedlinen - this is very important to us.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Last years visitors waxed lyrical-so much so we have already repeat bookings. A group of American doctors came in October and agreed to give a testimonial if so requested as did the cycling group in June and a group of journalists in July. contact me if you want to be put in touch. Everyone agreed it is a perfect house for groups of friends but also a wonderful family house for children and adults alike.People fall in love with this area as it is true Provence- very different and much more chic than the cote d'azur :)) The house is perfectly situated to be as quite and peaceful as you like but also near enough to all the best restaurants, village squares with bars and shops and cultural pursuits. We travelled all around the south of France renting many houses before we found our idea of heaven- we hope you feel the same !

Wonderful familh holiday

  • 5 of 5

Just back from a weeks holiday in this wonderful property. Tim and I and our 3 children age ranges 19 to 25 with Sophie's boyfreind and Jamie's girlfiriend. One of the best family holidays we have had. Was rather nervous about renting a house as have to admit Tim and I are a fussy couple. But we needn't have been. It was like staying in someone's luxurious home that had just been featured in House and Garden ! Everthing you could possibly want for a perfect holiday. Oh and the beds ! I am going to ask Alison where she bought them from. The most comfortable sleep ever ! Tons to do in the area. I already knew that I loved this area of Provence and for a reason. The countryside is beautiful and so many villages and towns to visit on the doorstep. Alison left an extremely comprehensive manuel with everything you could need listed- times of markets/ restaurants/ all contact numbers etc etc. Alison's housekeeper Neassa is the loveliest most helpful person. Nothing was too much trouble with Alison herself checking we were all fine. Have only been back 24 hours and we have booked for next year !

Tasteful, homely villa in great location

  • 5 of 5

We shared the house with another family for two weeks and had the best time! Great location with lots of easy to get to towns nearby and one of the best restaurants in the whole region in the same village! The Bistro du Paradou. The house is family friendly and pool right by the kitchen and outdoor eating area making it easy to watch kids. All the rooms are beautifully done and gardens very pretty too. Not overlooked in any way either. Can't think of any complaints and hope to return next year.

Wonderful family holiday

  • 4 of 5

My family (party of 8 adults, 1 toddler and 1 baby) had a fantastic week stay here in June. The house and it's grounds are simply stunning, the photo's are great but truly can't do it justice, it's that beautiful! Also, the house seemed much bigger than i expected. The house was equipped with everything we needed - with the exception of English commentary during the Euros ;) I think we could have watched it if we had brought our Sky viewing card but hadn't realised this beforehand. There were an extreme amount of flies during the beginning of our stay i believe due to some unsettled weather before we arrived which of course could not be helped, but were difficult to keep on top of! They seemed to ease off as the week went on and the weather remained hot. Paradou is lovely, we used the house bikes to explore locally which was great. We used the pizza oven a couple of times which was fun. The pool was lovely and refreshing for us adults but i wish i had brought my baby's wetsuit costume as he (8 months old) found the pool too cold. Our toddler also found it a bit nippy but managed to brave it for longer. I'm sure if they had their wetsuits they would have been fine. The alarm on the pool gave piece of mind with the children. We would love to return one day and will be recommending this to all our friends in the future. Alison was fantastic, always friendly and warm and answered all our queries, her housekeeper was brilliant and very accommodating too.

Owner's Response: Its always good to hear that guests have been delighted with the place and time and time again we hear that the photos don't do it justice ! The place is just wonderful and perfect for families. It is rural so sadly at certain times - and it does seem to be when a storm is due, there can be flies due to the farm next door but they settle as the temperature rises. Equally the pool is not heated but by July it is wonderfully warm as it is in full sun all day. Adults find it refreshing but maybe little ones could be cold in the deeper end. The television is indeed mainly French though news channels can be accessed in English. We have a sky box so if guests bring their own sky card they can access all channels on sky satellite.( Im a bit of a technophobe so Im assured by my son this works !) I would welcome this family back any time as they really looked after the house as if it was their own and everything was left immaculate. So happy they had a lovely holiday !

Stunning destination

  • 5 of 5

We were here for a family wedding and have stayed prior to this on a few occasions. The house remains a beautiful peaceful haven to relax and enjoy the surrounding countryside and beautiful villages, Mausanne a firm favorite with a plentiful selection of eateries and a very welcoming square.

We look forward to returning in the near future to this beautiful accommodation, well worth a visit.

Really beautiful house in gorgeous setting

  • 5 of 5

we were completely satisfied in every way. The house and garden are immaculate. The kitchen very well stocked for serious cooking- every gadget, basic kitchen stock of oils and condiments, good knives and smart crockery and serving dishes. We took advantage of the lower rates at this time of year and were very happy as the weather was extremely pleasant and all the restaurants and shops in Maussane and Paradou open. We actually didn't go very far as we were very content at the house and going out to the villages for shopping and eating. The beds are sublimely comfortable and big !. Im hoping to come back next year as this is probably the best house we have ever rented. The owner couldn't have been more helpful and communicative which is always a comforting sign. Really top holiday !

An oasis in an area of natural beauty

  • 5 of 5

After a long delayed journey from london we arrive in an idyllic little valley to mas des anges. Surrounded by lavender and rustic fields, it couldnt be more fitting to be named house of angels. Blissfully quiet apart from the soothing sound of crickets in the trees, it is exactly what i needed after the hustle and bustle of living in central london. The house and garden are spacious and beautifully decorated in the true provencal style you only ever see in magazines. Being an old stone farmhouse, the bedrooms were suprisingly cool even though the temperatures outside were reaching the 40s some days. Great kitchen and dining area that opens up onto another outdoor dining area with a fantastic bbq grill. Our only complaint was that we had to leave! This house is fantastically homely and the owner couldn't have been anymore helpful and charming with any requests we had.

cant wait to return asap

Cycling, Walking, Cookery, Art, Provencal Culture. All can be arranged. Last year a group of very keen cyclists booked the house in June and rented professional bicycles from Maussane. We have 5 bikes in the outhouse/wood shed but they are more recreational. The tour de France comes nearby to Mouries. This is an area famous for the quality of the light and the changing hues of the garrigue so attracts artists, musicians and writers who are inspired by its magic. The weekly food markets are an attraction in themselves. Paradou has a food market on Wednesday,MaussaneThursday and St Martin de Crau Friday. The market in St Remy is wed+saturday with an evening arts and crafts market on Tuesday. Shops are open everyday from 8am to 13.00 and 15.00 to 19.00.except sunday open 8.00 until 13.00 and nothing open monday morning until about 15.00. Maussane has excellent shops and restaurants but the best bakers is in Paradou-fig and orange bread and the best flakey croissants you will ever taste!

Nearest beach either Cassis 1 hr drive or wide sandy beaches- amazing restaurants and music at Monpellier,la Grand Motte- 45mins.Totally wild and beautiful-Les Calanques near Marseille. These are fairly difficult access wise some involve climbing down the cliffs but so unspoilt and worth it. One you can drive to has Le Lunch restaurant with the freshest fish and coldest wine right on the beach.Horse riding on the beach in the Camargue with wild white horses along side one for the bucket list.

Marseille 40mins airport Marignane easyjet and ryanair also Air france

Nimes 30 mins airport Garonne Ryanair from Luton or Liverpool

Nice 2.30 hours international airport Easyjet and Air France also British Airways

Montpellier 1 hour Ryanair from Leeds Bradford or Birmingham is very easy as both are small airports and the airport is already on the east side and very easy to drive to the house via Arles. Avignon 30 mins TGV and airport from London City or Southhampton Flybe. Car essential.

Paradou Center 5 mins drive bicycle 10 mins,15mins walk

Maussane les Alpilles 10 min drive bicycle 25 mins charming village square with restaurants and shops.Thursday morning market. Fantastic festivities throughout the summer but especially 13/14th July with bull running through the village and dancing in the square all ages all night.

St Remy de Provence lovely chic boutiques art galleries and restaurants 15 mins drive

Arles 20 mins drive

Aix en Provence 40 mins drive

Avignon 40 mins

Further Details:

Bistro de Paradou was mentioned in Conde Nast travelling magazine as one of the 10 best bistros in France -no menu fixed price 4 courses and as much local wine as you can drink-booked for at least 3 weeks ahead! (I can do that for you). Chateau Establon under the platane trees with white linen cloths and local white Establon wine to die for, Cabri d ' Or by a small lake and young enthusiastic staff, chez Franke and Flo in Maussane got excellent reviews by A A Gill in the Sunday Times- must book ! L' oustau de baumaniere (ouch expensivebut soooo beautiful), La Maison Jaune michelin 2star at st remy. The best little pizzeria in the world is Collette and Brunos on the road between Paradou and Maussane. Tin tables on the street, a fridge you help yourself to wine and the loo is behind the tree! Excellent bakery (try the fig and orange bread), butchers, general store and english speaking doctors in Paradou village. Banks, supermarkets and other shops in Maussane. Paradou festival with lunch and dancing takes place first week of September. 14th of July festivities in Maussane include the bull running with Gitanes, dancing with live music and dancers is a must see.Arles Rencontre photography festival is in july as is the Avignon arts and music festival. Chez Caro in Arles -delicious,must book.15mins away.St Remy charming Roman old town with Roman remains at Glanum- lovely chic traffic free centre with arts fair on Tuesday evenings and wednesday market. At Les Baux ( village in the hills next to Paradou ) there is a wonderful art and music exhibition in the old quarry called Luminieres de Carrieres. For cyclists the tour de France comes very close - last year through Mouries. Keen cyclists can hire professional bikes to be delivered to the house with helmets. The cycling routes are numerous and all different levels from easy to challenging. May June and September October are superb for cyclists. The transumence festival in St Remy steers 500 sheep through the centre- great fun in June. Maussane is a lively little town with regular festivals/brocante /food markets every thursday morning.Antiques/brocante at Villeneuve les Avignon every saturday morning is great fun ! we shop in Maussane as the local produce is fantastic and there is a good choice of food supplies. Best butcher is in Paradou.Wine-Mas St Berthe-red ,white and rose ! There are many vineyards that organise wine tastings - we can advise
