About Patricia Amer

My husband and I live in Suffolk, which is very flat, so Gascony is a complete change with its rolling hills and mountains. We have had properties in the Gascony region for over 30 years, starting with a 17c farmhouse in need of much renovation. 18 years ago we saw l'Amersfoort and immediately fell in love with it. Since then we have visited the house for around 3 months each year and still feel it is as wonderful as when we first saw it. Over the years we have had many visitors during the summer and everyone has said how beautiful it is and how good the facilities are. l'Amersfoort is our home in France and we have put lots of love and thought into it. We hope you will enjoy visiting too.

Patricia Amer purchased this house in 1998

Why Patricia Amer chose Hautes-Pyrenees

We first visited Gascony over 30 years ago on holiday and loved the slow pace of life, the food and the friendly local people. The region feels like England 80 years ago! I love the rolling hills and valleys, with the Pyrenees as a backdrop wherever you go. The little villages are full of history with bastide towns, monastries and castles. Although not near the sea, there are many lakes in the area with sandy beaches, and great for swimming but without the noisy seaside crowds in high season. Even after 30 years of coming here, our family look forward to visiting the house, to relax and recharge their batteries.

What makes this house unique

The thing we love about l'Amersfoort is the gentle pace of life. Sitting under the shaded patio eating meals and watching the odd tractor go past, with the farmer waving and smiling. If we just want to relax we stay around the house and pool. If we are feeling more energetic we go off to various towns nearby such as Condom, Pau, Auch to sight see and shop. We are still discovering new places and breathtaking views. We never become bored with this region.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We've had a wonderful time here at l'Amersfoort. The house is amazing and SO big. We all loved the garden and pool and had many nights having BBQ's. Thank you also for the lovely welcome pack which was really needed as we arrived too late for the shops. We hope to be back very soon.

Notes:
Notes on accommodation: The house has high ceilings and large rooms and is light and airy, with tiled floors downstairs and wooden floors upstairs. It has a beautiful oak winding main staircase leading from the hall and a second spiral staircase from the kitchen. A small balcony from the landing gives lovely views of the nearby Pyrenees. The garden is enclosed by hedges and large wrought iron gates, so safe for young children. The swimming pool is approached via a fence and gate which we recommend is kept closed when there is no adult supervision around the pool. The tile floors and high ceiling make the house cool in the hot summer months. Outside: The very private 1 acre garden is mainly grass with old chestnut and fir trees, several fruit trees, roses and flowering bushes. Guests are welcome to pick any fruit in season. The covered patio has a table, chairs and a gas BBQ. A great place to eat during summer as it is shaded from the hot sun. The 10m x 5m private swimming pool has steps leading into it and can be heated for an extra cost. A patio surrounds the pool with sun loungers, chairs and a table. A large pool house is used to store extra chairs/loungers and a selection of pool and garden games. There is a fridge in the pool house for your cold drinks. Parasols and a very large plum tree offer shade during the day, as it can get very hot during the summer months. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Linen and towels (not swimming towels) are included. Cot linen can be provided. The property is cleaned before arrival and after guests have left. Extra cleaning can be arranged at a small cost. Other: The dining room has a large table seating 8, wood burning stove, welsh dresser and a side cabinet.

Fantastic house for a family holiday

  • 5 of 5

Situated in a quiet rural setting this house is very spacious, well equipped and comfortable. The pool is a good size and has plenty of loungers. The house has a lovely garden suitable for games and a runaround area for children. There is a small town nearby which has a supermarket, various bars/shops a good pizzeria and a weekly market. It is close enough by car to many other areas worth visiting. My family really felt relaxed and spoilt there. Would highly recommend, lovely owner and great housekeepers who made sure we were well looked after.

Beautiful property and location

  • 5 of 5

A thoroughly beautiful, clean and well equipped house, pool and garden. Everything you need for a relaxing holiday. The whole house is extremely comfortable and welcoming and we felt at home very quickly! Anne and Jacques were very friendly and helpful, which was a godsend. We loved the area and the local town. There were plenty of boulangeries and a super internarche for grocery shopping too! All in all a great holiday!

Fantastic place for family / friend groups

  • 5 of 5

We were a family of 9 who really enjoyed staying here for a week in a great rural location. There was plenty of indoor and outdoor space for eating and relaxing, and all the rooms were very spacious. The pool was large with plenty of room to sit and relax around it.

On the days we decided to explore we enjoyed the local villages, the Jazz festival at Merciac, trips to Pau, the Pic du Midi (visiting the observatory there) and then over the Tourmalet to Lourdes.

Anne, who looks after the property, and her husband Jacques were really helpful especially with ideas for our trips out.

Would highly recommend !

Coast/Beach:

Biarritz is around 2 hours drive away, and has good beaches. It is well known for surfing.

Travel:

Toulouse is the main international airport for this region, around 90 minutes drive away. We also have Lourdes airport (45 minutes drive), Pau (1 hours drive).

The ferry from Portsmouth to St Malo is the easier route for drivers. From St Malo to the property takes around 7 hours. Driving from Caen takes around 8 hours and Calais will take around 10 - 12 hours.

Distances:

The nearest villages are Mielan and Trie sur Baise, both around 10kms away. Trie has a very good market on Tuesdays and the supermarket there is well stocked. Mielan has a small supmarket but is open from 8am until 8pm.

Marciac is 20 mins drive away, and attracts lots of visitors to its famous Jazz Festival in August. Mirande, 25 mins away, has a huge Country and Western festival in July. The region is steeped in history.

A trip to the Pyrenees is a must! Breathtaking scenery and lots of good places for lunch. We love visiting the village of Fources, near Condom. It is one of the prettiest villages in France and the restaurant in the square serves superb food.
