About Maxine

We have lived in France for several years now and run two businesses, our gites and also a tree surgery business. Both of these allow us to make the most of the lovely countryside and glorious weather. We look forward to welcoming you to Le Grand Juvet.

Maxine purchased this barn in 2008

Why Maxine chose Limoges area

We fell in love with this part of France. Its a beautiful area with lots of trees and lush countryside. The locals really could not have been nicer to us and we have been made so welcome. We often come home to find a neighbour has left surplus veg on our doorstep. Lots of people say its like the UK was 40 years ago when nobody had to lock doors and everyone was keen to help everyone else. Oh and coming from Scotland the weather has been a huge bonus, proper seasons and lots of sun in summer time!

Guestbook comments from the owner

'Absolutely superb gite in a most beautiful location. We cannot think of a more perfect place to relax and unwind'

'We all had a fantastic and relaxing holiday in your beautiful gite that has everything you could possibly want and more. It's so peaceful here and the surroundings and views are wonderful, we wish we could bottle it all up and take it home with us. We grew very fond of all the animals, especially the daily visits from the baby ducks. You wont find better hosts, they have been so kind and helpful to us and so enjoyable to talk to. There is so much to do in the area, we especially enjoyed the races at Pompadour, swimming in the lake at St Yrieix, the castle at Chalucet.... All in all the perfect holiday and we hope to return'

'We picked this gite because it filled all the boxes for our requirements, we now know that it has filled more than boxes - it has filled our hearts with fond memories for years to come!'

Notes on accommodation: Having sampled a number of gites ourselves over the years we have set out to provide something that we struggled to find - spacious accommodation with large rooms, nicely decorated, well furnished, more than enough equipment and a private, pretty oustide area to drink a glass of wine and admire the view. We hope that is what we have achieved. Both properties have been recently renovated / restored. In the barn we have retained the stone walls, exposed beams and many quirky features which allude to its previous use. In the farmhouse we have tried to use wallpaper and paint colours which are sympathetic to its proportions and character. We have animals on site - horses, chickens and ducks. They are housed well away from your accommodation but for those guests who wish to be involved with the animals they are more than welcome to join me in my daily duties of feeding, watering, collecting eggs, grooming horses etc. Outside: Each property has its own private courtyard with outdoor table and chairs, parasol, plunge pool and BBQ, accessed directly from your accommodation. In total we have 15 acres of land. The orchard is a lovely place so sit and take in the view. The entire property is securely fenced and gated so children are safely contained and have plenty space to expend some energy! We have mountain bikes for guests use.

We stayed in the barn conversion and we were amazed at the detail and care taken to make the accommodation so comfortable, atmospheric and beautiful. Plenty of space and the outside area is perfect for relaxing, swimming and playing with awesome views, especially as the sun sets. Great location for exploring nearby towns too. We were lucky enough to get tickets for the Circus (Sirque) in Nexon to see an acrobatic performance, which was brilliant! A lot of shows and events in August so be sure to do some research. We had a fab holiday and couldn't have hoped for a better place to stay. Thank you! X

Beautiful barn in a beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

Maxine and Darren were wonderful hosts. They came and rescued us when we got lost (we were one village away). We stayed in the smaller barn conversion which was beautiful, it had everything we needed and more. It is set in a small hamlet, so you do need a car but there is a super market only 10 mins away and the roads are so so quiet which made driving super easy. Maxine and Darren know the area really well and gave advice on where to go, how to get there on alsorts of things we asked about including food shopping, zoo, markets etc. This is a really beautiful part of France and we had a wonderful weeks stay here. We would thoroughly recommend staying here.

Lost in France

  • 5 of 5

The idea behind the title is that we were surprised how much space we had, inside and out. The property was what we would consider as a typical French farmhouse. The kitchen was well equipped with everything you would need. The rooms were large and airy and well maintained.

The owners were very approachable and friendly and were always on hand to help and advise us.

The pool and games room helped keep the kids amused when we were not out exploring.

We would recommend the property to friends and family and would consider a return trip ourselves.

The location is remote enough to be quiet but not so far as to be a problem. The surrounding areas have plenty to offer without having to travel too far.

The Barn

  • 4 of 5

We recently returned from two weeks staying in The Barn. This is a very well appointed property. Maxine and Darren are lovely hosts, when we arrived there was fresh bread, milk, orange juice and even a bottle of pear cider! Having stayed at many properties over time this was a first. They were available if needed but not intrusive. The Barn is in lovely countryside, which makes for a nice relaxing holiday. We had a lovely holiday and would recommend this property.

Lovely Stay.

  • 5 of 5

What a lovely week. The Barn was really welcoming, and had everything you could need for a week away. It has been renovated to a very high standard and really felt like a home from home. It's a long drive to get there from Calais, but worth every minute! The kitchen is so well stocked, if you cook - you'll want for nothing! Everywhere was really clean and tidy, and is a real credit to the work put in by the owners Maxine & Darren. Maxine even offered to prepare a salad and cold meats for us ready for our arrival as they knew we'd be shattered, such is the friendly welcoming manner that she has. We were concerned that we had forgotten to buy BBQ coals when we got there, but there was a gas BBQ ready and waiting to be fired up - this was a godsend after the drive! Maxine even made sure we had eggs, juice and milk in the fridge, as well as a bottle of wine when we got there. The terrace area to the rear had lots of use over the week, as did the pool to cool off. Definitely the best stay we have had in France - don't look elsewhere on this site, if the property is available - book it!

Thank you both for the week, and we hope to see you again!

Lots of lake beaches and lake swimming available within a 15 minute drive. During the summer all have a life guard and there are various other activities/facilities on offer, diving platforms, pedaloes, cafes, velo rail, canoe hire etc. We can advise on the best ones for your needs.

An easy 40 minute drive from Limoges airport. An easy hours drive from Brive airport. Approx two hours from Bergerac and Poitiers airports.

Approx seven hours drive from the ferry ports. The French motorways are excellent so it really is quite a pleasant trip!

4km to nearest village (which has an excellent restaurant open for lunches and dinner), 14km to the medieval town of St Yrieix la Perche which provides a choice of four large supermarkets, many restaurants to suit all budgets, bars, a weekly market and an excellent selection of shops. A new leisure centre has opened which offers indoor and outdoor pools with flumes and wave machine for the kids and spa facilities and gym for the grown ups. There are numerous Chateaux to visit locally.
