Overview

About the property

Bed and Breakfast in Barga, Province of Lucca, Tuscany, Italy - Peaceful Location.Olive Groves, Romantic. 20 Minutes Walk From Town Centre.

La Serra di Barga B&B is located on the slope of a hill facing the 1000 yrs old cathedral of Barga, a medieval town of some 2000 inhabitants. It is in the Valle del Serchio, between the Appennines on the East and the Apuan Alps on the West. From La Serra and from the surrounding paths there is a great view over the mountains and the Duomo di Barga. There are numerous trails allowing both easy strolls as well as more strenuous hikes. The area is rich in historic buildings, especially Churches, Castles, Fortresses, Palaces and Watermills. Inhabitants of Barga and surrounding villages in the past have emigrated abroad, especially to Scotland, in search of work. Many of their descendants have come back to Barga over the years, and contribute to a very special international atmosphere. Barga has been named ‘the most Scottish town in Italy’.

About The Owner

Our names are Pietro Bianchessi and Marijke de Jong. I am Italian and was raised in Crema (Cremona, Italy) whereas my wife Marijke is Dutch and was raised in Bergen-N.H. (The Netherlands). We met in Holland in 1969, and were married in 1975. We lived in The Netherlands (Bergen, Eindhoven), Canada (Montreal), Italy (Ivrea) and Luxembourg (Schrassig). In 2005 we retired and in 2007 we bought this property in Barga.

During our travels we have often visited guest houses, backpackers, hostels and B&B's and thought we could use our experience as guests to play the hosts. This is how we came to be here and are now offering our hospitality. We speak English. We spreken Nederlands. Nous parlons francais. Wir sprechen Deutsch. Parliamo italiano.

The Owner purchased this guest house in 2007

Why The Owner chose Barga

We wanted to come and live in Italy. We were looking for a property in the country side, with a view, a good climate, yet within walking distance from a small town. A town with character and history, but also with a few restaurants, shops and cafés. A place where it would be possible for us to easily make new friends, both italian and foreign. We wanted an old property, with character. Near the mountains, yet not too far from the seaside. And within reasonable distance to an international airport. And not invaded by the tourist crowds. And reasonable prices (no tourist traps).

Barga seemed the ideal location, with its Bargajazz festival, its lively scottish-italian community, its network of hiking trails in the Appennines and the Apuan Alps, its excellent trattorie and cosy cafés.

What makes this guest house unique

The one thing which is special about La Serra di Barga is the view. Every morning when we open the window we have a stunning view on the Duomo and the Apuan Alps in the background (Pania della Croce and Pania Secca). In the evening, the valley reminds us of a presepio, with the lights of all the little villages up on the slopes of the mountain. Also, our house is situated amongst an olive grove, birds singing and flowers in the fields, in a pastural tranquillity. Yet we are only 20 minutes walk (1.5 km, 5 min by car) from shops and restaurants and cafés.

Dear Marijke and Pietro

Staying at La Serra di Barga was out-of-this world. It's a magical place and you have created something very special.

Thank you for everything!

Dear Pietro and Marijke,

Thank you so much for your wonderful hospitality! You made our trip to Barga unforgettable. The Panoramica room is comfortable and beautiful. The view of the "dead man" (we prefer to think of him as sleeping) is spectacular. Breakfast was fresh, delicious and beautifully served. But the highlight of our stay was meeting you. We left feeling we had made new friends. We look forward to coming again someday.

All our best,

Abbiamo trascorso due giorni perfetti: luoghi pieni di fascino (non vedevo più le lucciole da anni!), una camera con una vista spettacolare sulle montagne, la piacevole compagnia di Pietro e Marijke, ottimi padroni di casa.

My husband and I spent 7 nights at this beautiful B&B, and we can honestly say it was everything we had hoped for. The views are amazing, our accommodations were excellent, and we loved breakfast! The hosts are friendly and helpful; we were extremely pleased, and even hope to return!

Special interest holidays:

For a modest fee, the owner will give private tuition in the Italian language and/or accompany guests on hiking trails in the area.

Coast/Beach:

Distance to the Ligurian coast (Viareggio) is 65km / 75 min. drive. The coast from Viareggio to La Spezia is called Versilia. It is flat and wide and sandy. Ideal place for families. The coast near La Spezia is more hilly and rocky and it includes the famous area called Le Cinque Terre, where nature lovers have been taking hikes and walks since the times of Byron and Shelley.

Travel:

The nearest and most convenient airport is Pisa 70km / 75 min drive. Hiring a car is recommended for people used to a comfortable style of living and/or people that want to explore the area by car. For people that are more sportish and are happy to walk 20 minutes from La Serra to the town of Barga, it is possible to arrive in Barga from Pisa by public transport (train or bus). The owner can fetch guests from the bus in Barga (no charge) or from the train in Gallicano (small fee).

Distances:

Pisa (leaning tower of Pisa, airport): 70km / 75 min. Lucca (medieval walls, san Michele, Torre Guinigi) 40km / 50 min. Bagni di Lucca (thermal baths) 18km / 20 min. Firenze (Galleria d.Uffizi, Ponte Vecchio, Michelangelo's David) 106km / 90 min. Borgo a Mozzano (Ponte del diavolo) 16km / 20 min. Castelnuovo Garfagnana (Fortezzadi Mont'alfonso) 13km / 20 min.

Grotta del Vento (caves with guided tours) 15km / 30 min. Orrido di Botri (canyon for river walk) 15km / 30 min.

Further Details:

In Barga there are several shops, including a small Conad supermarket (there's a large Conad in Gallicano 7 km away). Some marvelous restaurants / Trattorie. We recommend: L'Altana -impeccable tuscan food and lovely ambiance-. Shamrock, Irish Pub, good food, friendly owners, outside terrace. Osteria Angelio -good food, historic setting, cheerful. Scacciaguai -refined cuisine and beautiful ambiente. Alpino -traditional cuisine, excellent wines. All the above places are geared to give both to locals and to tourists good quality food for the correct price. Barga has 5 banks, all located in the part of town called Giardino. There is also a hospital, a vet, a number of doctor's practices, 2 pharmacies, 1 theatre, 1 cinema (Italian spoken only), a video-hire shop, 2 news-stands, a number of pasticcerie/cafè/gelaterie, etc.
