Beautiful townhouse ideally situated in picturesque village of Iznajar

Overview

Property

Updated: 15-Nov-2016
Best location in village with stunning views, a large outdoor terrace, and BBQ

A unique modern townhouse built to a traditional design. Situated at the top of the picturesque Iznajar, with uninterrupted views of the countryside, village and 8th century castle. Newly reconstructed, the house is cool in summer as it faces north and is built into the cliff face. It has two en-suite double bedrooms (with ceiling fans), beautiful open-plan lounge/dining area and fully fitted kitchen. There is also a large cellar/games room. It has a wood burning pellet stove and central heating for cooler late autumn and spring evenings. At the top of a quiet village street with stunning viewing points of the lake. Parking is possible outside the house. The open air area opposite has weekly events during the high summer. All the amenities of the village, including shops, restaurants and bars are nearby. The roof terrace provides sun and some shade and built in traditional barbecue. It is an ideal spot for eating, relaxing and watching the world go slowly by. Iznajar is easily accessible: approximately an hour from the coast and Malaga airport. In the heart of unspoilt Andulucia, it is an excellent base for exploring the national parks, yet close to the motorway system for access to Cordoba, Granada and Seville.

About the Owner

We are semi retired and although living in Wales, we love spending as much time as possible in Iznajar and Andulucia. We love the fact that the village preserves the best of the old Spanish traditions with many cultural events and activities. We are always made to feel welcome and so are our visitors.

Great base for exploring the sights of Andalucia: we visited Cordoba, Granada and Seville.

I've never felt so relaxed - lovely scenery and a taste of the "real" Spain. The terrace is a great place for a BBQ in the evening.

One of the best places we've stayed. Its really well equipped. Nice and cool - even during August.

Spacious, comfortable, clean and well-appointed.

Thoroughly enjoyed the stay despite extremely hot weather!

Would recommend this house if you have a car - important for getting around. Two supermarkets and fruit shop were useful. Found many places in walking distance closed or offering limited service. Enjoyed exploring this very hilly and historic town. No TV reception; plenty of books to read and a music system - bring your own DVDs/CDs. The English couple at the Café Bar Verde were very helpful.

Just wanted to say that we've had a lovely time and that the location is fab. We've been to Seville, Cordoba and Granada as well as touring the local sights. Enjoyed the tapas and the friendly people. Weather has been perfect.

Iznajar

  • 5 of 5

The house is situated at the top of the town via a narrow road in the old town of Iznajar. The town does not have many tourists and is still traditional in its values. Local cafe/bars were very reasonable and one in particular exceptional value.

There is plenty of information on the local area and places further afield in the house. If you want to get around a car is vital, also if it is peace you want this is also an ideal getaway but it is also within reasonable distance of the Costa Del Sol and some of Spain's most charming tourist cities.

The property overlooks the castle and lake and has enchanting vistas, especially from the terrace on the 2nd floor where there is also a BBQ, dining table and sunbeds. The house was substantial for our needs, both bathrooms (on the ground floor) have on-suites and the beds were comfortable. The lounge/diner and kitchen is open plan on the first floor and were adequate. The one downside was the TV and no wifi facilities The TV had limited stations in English, it effectively meant getting tucked into a good book. The TV is old and channels limited and of course these days most people need the gratification of the internet.

Although it takes a while to get to the main roads the journey to them is pretty. We used the house as a base to travel to Cordoba, Seville, Nerja and also to explore the local area. Granada is also within comfortable driving distance.

Iznajar is delightful and the people friendly and I would certainly like to visit again in the future to explore further some of the inland towns that we passed by but did not have the time to visit. If you are in good health the area is ideal for walkers, and biking. The town is not ideal if you have a walking disability or heart or breathing problems because of the steepness of the roads leading to and from the house and generally throughout the town but of course you would not have the wonderful views if the house was situated further in the town.

Fantastic Holiday

  • 5 of 5

I recently stayed with a couple of girl friends at this lovely town house. We had a fantastic time and both the house and Iznajar catered for all our needs. One of the girls was pregnant so we generally stayed close to the house, but it had everything we needed.

Lots of lovely places to eat in the village, including our favourite, Patio del Comidas next to the historic castle and the restaurant next to the beach on the lake. Also used the outdoor BBQ on the terrace several times, with fresh fish bought from the village (and then a cafe only a short walk from the house which does highly recommended ice creams if you still have room!).

Great to sit on the terrace and have a lazy breakfast and enjoy the fantastic views. Terrace also perfect for a bit of sunbathing as very private but the sail cover provided by the owners also gives lots of shade which was great for those of us with pale skin or with a bump.

Swam in both the lake, where you can set up among the trees on the end of the beach for shade and then pop into the water to cool off, and the swimming pool at the local hotel. The house is also really cool, particularly the bedrooms, so lovely to return to after being out for the day.

Property was clean and well maintained with very friendly neighbours who always say hello and are more than happy to have a sign language conversation if you have very limited Spanish!

We are already planning to return next year......

Location

From the Owner

It was "love at first sight" for us when we first saw Iznajar. The castle and village perched on the top of the hill, the amazing blue of the lake and sky, the endless olive groves - and this was in January! Although we knocked down the original house, we were determined to use local builders to construct a traditional house but with all modern amenities. We wanted to capture the spectacular views which is why we created a terrace with a BBQ area.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Malaga at 55 Kilometres Nearest Barpub : Several in the village - 3 within 4 minute walk at 200 Metres Nearest Restaurant : Several in the village within walking distance at 200 Metres Nearest Beach : Iznajar on the reservoir at 1.5 Kilometres Car: necessary

Special interest holidays:

Ideal base for walking and exploring the countryside. Fishing and swimming in the lake together with pedaloes, canoeing and possibility of sailing/wind-surfing. Mountain biking, horse riding and hot air ballooning all nearby.

Freshwater Lake and Beach:

The 32k lake has a sandy beach, a restaurant and a small classically Spanish hotel, owned by the local village, as well as some water-sports. The beach is deserted in the week, though frequented by the locals at the weekend.

Nearby Places:

Malaga with all its cultural attractions, marina and beaches is only an hour away; whilst Granada is slightly closer and Cordoba is only an hour and a quarter's drive. There is also easy access to the Costa del Sol, with the seaside villages from Nerja down to Gibraltar. The Sierra Nevada mountains form a back-drop to Granada and offer good trekking and mountain-biking as does the Subettica National Park - in which Iznajar is situated.

The El Chorro gorge and reservoir with canoeing and other water sports are 45 minutes away.

Antequerra is one of our favourite places. It is an upmarket town with an historic castle, a fine bullring, a clutch of interesting churches and some excellent shopping.

There are lots of pretty white-washed villages and towns in the area, which are well-worth exploring.

Travel:

Malaga airport is one hour away (72 kilometers) mostly on motorway, with the last 21 kilometres on a good country road. Car hire is essential.

Distances:

Granada (45 minutes), Cordoba (1.25 hour) and Seville (under 2 hours) are three of the most fascinating, historic and romantic cities in Spain.

Local Information:

The local shops, banks, library, churches, Moorish castle and plazas with bars and cafes are a short walk away from the house. There are 2 small supermarkets in Iznajar, and a large supermarket in the nearby town of Rute. There is a brand new public swimming pool with cafe and sun loungers near the beach. Some local hotels and restaurants have their own swimming pools which can be used while enjoying a meal. There are numerous good restaurants in the area, including Iznajar's own beach-side restaurant. There are also simpler traditional Spanish hostelries and tapas bars.
