Restored Farmhouse Within Private Walled Grounds Of Just Under 1 Acre

Updated: 13-Jan-2016
Farmhouse in Richelieu, Loire Valley, France - Peaceful Loire Valley Location In Open Countryside, 5 Minutes From Historic Richelieu

La Croixe Blanche is a comfortable, well restored and equipped 200 year old farmhouse just outside the historic town of Richelieu, which was built by the famous Cardinal of 'Three Musketeers' fame. Situated in open countryside, it is within approximately 1 hour's drive of many of the Loire Valley's famous attractions. These include the beautifully restored medieval town of Chinon (25 mins), chic Saumur (50 mins) and busy Tours (60 mins). The great Loire chateaux of Azay, Chenonceau, Amboise and Usse (of Sleeping Beauty fame) are all within approximately 1 hour's drive. Richelieu itself provides many amenities, including beautiful squares, an ancient market, a chateau park, and open air swimming. Historic Poitiers is within 1 hour, and the port of La Rochelle with its glorious nearby beaches is a 2 hour drive.

About the Owner

We have owned property around the Loire Valley since 2003, buying this home in 2010.

We love the area for its relaxed lifestyle, fine weather, great wine and wonderful towns, which include some magical chateaux and good shops!

Our family love to visit several times each year, but we like the idea of guests enjoying La Croix Blanche and the area when we are not there!

Guestbook comments from the owner

'The house was absolutely perfect, so peaceful and the perfect location. On our last evening there we had been out for dinner in Chinon and driving home about 11pm all the villages were letting off fireworks.

We spent a lovely lunchtime at one of the cafes in the square in Richelieu watching kids running in and out of the fountain. How clever, making it at ground level like that – perfect!!'

Everything we were hoping for and more!

  • 5 of 5

La Croix Blanche is set in blissfully rural Loire countryside but less than 5 mins drive from the fabulous town of Richelieu.

We loved the property's beautiful traditional stone buildings, which were wonderfully cool even in the midday heat. The house and gardens are really spacious, and the garden being securely walled meant we could relax while our children dashed about. The house has a real sense of history yet has been comfortably renovated and the sleeping accommodation is flexible enough to accommodate families of all shapes and sizes.

The town of Richelieu is big enough to have all the shops, cafes etc you need but was never unpleasantly busy even on market days in high summer. It's architecturally glorious, with a market square fountain that our kids drenched themselves in along with the local children. There's also a lovely open air swimming pool, and a huge shady park for endless family picnics just outside the town walls. The location of the house itself was perfect for us as we wanted to explore the area without driving too far each day; there are fairytale chateaux, interesting towns and family run vineyards all within half an hour's drive.

The English owner was really helpful and gave us lots of handy tips before we went. I'd wholeheartedly recommend La Croix Blanche to anyone visiting the Loire!

Lovely, relaxing holiday house

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a lovely, relaxing holiday in this beautiful, spacious house. The house is in a beautiful, peaceful area and very well-maintained and clean. We enjoyed sitting out in the sun in the lovely garden and watching the wildlife, of which there was plenty - we were lucky enough to see the resident owls a couple of times! The only thing we felt the garden lacked were some sun loungers for those lazy, hot days where you just want to read and relax.

All the bedrooms were well-decorated with comfy beds and there were plenty of bathrooms to accommodate everyone. It was great to have towels, bedlinen, washing up liquid etc provided too as well as lots of books and DVDs. David, the owner, was extremely helpful and friendly and kept us well-informed with 'how to's' and directions etc and there was plenty of information in the house about the local area and things to see and do.

Richelieu, the nearest town, is beautiful with a lovely park and lots for the history buff. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants - we would recommend the Auberge Le Cardinal where we had a lovely meal. The boulangerie and patisserie are excellent too.The market on Friday mornings is fabulous, amazing fresh fish, delicious fruit and veg and cheese. We also enjoyed visting Chinon and Saumur as well as many of the Chateaux in the area - Usse and Breze were highlights. There are plenty of supermarkets within easy driving distance and the small Carrefour in Richelieu has a good range of basics and is open on Sunday mornings.

All in all a lovely place to stay and enjoy this beautiful part of France, we would recommend.
