Beautiful 17th Century Stone House in the Heart Of Languedoc

Overview

Property

Updated: 02-Dec-2016
Lovely 3 Bed House in Mons la Trivalle, Haut Languedoc Regional Natural Park - perfect for outdoor activities

La Casela is a 17th century stone house which we refurbished for our family in 2003 and to which we return each year. It is set on the edge of a friendly, small hamlet (Mons) which nestles on the side of Mont Caroux. The scenery is beautiful - vineyards line the valley, chestnut forest flanks the slopes which rise to the heather-covered mountain top. The house is perfect for exploring the area on foot, or as a base to enjoy swimming in nearby rivers and gorges, canoeing, riding, cycling on the long distance cycle path along the valley or mountain biking for the more adventurous, or venturing further afield to the beach or wine-tasting tours.

The house is very comfortable inside: the bedrooms and bathroom are light and pretty and the kitchen is very well equipped. The living room is spacious with a TV/DVD, sofa and chairs for relaxing and a wood burning stove for colder times. There is plenty of outside space for sunbathing and relaxing - either on the terraces or in the garden. There is also a sofa bed in case friends want to stay.

Mons La Trivalle is a small community in the Herault. The ancient part of the village is called Mons and it is located very close (1km) to the beautiful Gorges d'Heric. This is where our house, La Casela, is located and there is a lovely footpath straight from the house through chestnut woods to the Gorges, where you can swim, rock climb or hike. The environment is very tranquil and the perfect location for a family holiday. At the bottom of the valley (5 minute walk) is La Trivalle, where you find a bar, baker, grocery shop and restaurant. There is also a long distance, traffic-free cycle route through the village extending for 30km in either direction.

The river Orb runs through the bottom of the valley and provides wonderful opportunities for canoeing, swimming and sunbathing.

All in all the house is a great location for anyone looking for a relaxing holiday with good access to outdoor activities. In addition, the house is very comfortable and if you don't fancy going out at all, the terraces and garden provide the perfect location for reading and relaxing.

We had a fantastic holiday at Mons - many thanks for providing such a fantastic home for us to use. The house was lovely in a fantastic setting and the gorge was brilliant and the kayaking was enjoyed by all who took part. Overall we would give Mons a 4 star rating! Mr Jeffreys August 2012

We had a wonderful time in La Casela. Both the house and the surrounding area were beautiful. The house was well equipped and we were particularly impressed by your extensive selection of books. My husband loves to cook and he was very fond of the kitchen. We also had some great walks in the area around the gorge. All in all we had a lovely stay in La Casela. Mrs Bente, July 2012

I very much enjoyed our stay in La Casela. Ah, the bliss of no background traffic noise or piped music! I found the house and garden utterly sympatico and loved sallying forth down to the village below. Ms Whiteman, July 2012.

Very Nice

  • 4 of 5

It is in a beautiful area and views from upstairs windows are particularly nice. Walking to the home from where you park the car is a bit of an effort but that's part of the overall charm. The home was very clean, there was a welcoming bottle of wine, the internet was good, the bed was comfortable and the home is spacious and authentic. Owner responds quickly via electronic communication. Excellent centrally located area for hiking.

There is no freezer, not even a tiny one, in the small refrigerator. Not an huge problem, but I wish we had known ahead of time before shopping for groceries. A late, but final disappointment was that when we paid the required 300£ security deposit it was US, $397.33. When the 300£ deposit was credited back the £ had dropped and we got only $366--a direct additional $33 charge. Ah Brexit.

Definitely recommend.

A very special place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for an old country cottage with character and ambience where we could have a few days rest and relaxation with our two dogs. We found exactly that! The house is a couple of hundred metres from the Church car park and up a winding stone path. It oozes history but also is well equipped and comfortable. It is a lovely place just to BE.. We loved sitting on the spacious terrace in the September sunshine, watching the dogs stretched out on the cool flagstones after leaping over the stone walls and playing with the autumn leaves on the walk to the gorge . The views from the upstairs windows are stunning. The village shop ( 20 minute walk) is brilliant and the cafe bar very friendly. We will be back!

Beatifically restored building

  • 4 of 5

We had a perfect time in this much loved holiday home. We did loads of walking and exploring in the area. The local epicerie is perfect for buying all ones foodie needs supplemented by bread from the village boulangerie. The house is very well equipped with loads of space - I would have given it 5 stars as it suited us - 2 married couples - but the lack of a second toilet/ bathroom might be a consideration. We enjoyed evening drinks and meals on the stone flagged terrace.

Charming!

  • 5 of 5

Delightful, tastefully renovated old stone house in beautiful village.

The house has all the facilities you would want for a self catering holiday and does not have the empty box feeling of a property that is only used for rental. It is very comfortable and quiet.

There is a bakers, grocers, tobacconist and restaurant within walking distance where you could actually get everything you needed, but for more choice there is a supermarket about 15-20 mins drive away. The bread from the bakers was wonderful!

We went principally for the walking and to see some of the beautiful villages of Languedoc and we weren't disappointed. There are plenty of trails for walking and there is a 60 Km cycle track near the house which we walked a short way along and it looks great.

The village is quite hilly and the car parking is not directly beside the house, as the ad warns, so it's not suitable for those with walking difficulties, but I'm 65 and managed it fine.

I would recommend La Casela and hope to go back some time.

Fantastic Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We loved the cottage. It was really comfortable, had everything we needed and loads of character. Spent many an evening on the terrace chatting or reading the books from your wonderful collection, the TV wasn't switched on once. The location was great, really nice to be able to walk to a cafe and bakery. Enjoyed our walks down to the village for fresh pastries and coffee in the morning. Loads to do in the area, highly recommend canoeing down the River Orb.

Location

From the Owner

I have always loved this area - previously we owned a small house near Bedarieux where we spent our holidays, but we always found ourselves driving to Mons to swim, walk, eat, etc. So when the chance came to restore the derelict La Casela, we jumped at it!
