About the property

Seaside House in Gulval Churchtown, near Penzance, Cornwall - Peaceful location, with fantastic pub five minute walk

A large detached house that is beautifully warm and sunny. It is a house you feel very quickly at home in and won't want to leave. There is lots of space inside and out so no one gets under each others feet but its not big enough to get lost in. The accommodation is very light with exposed wooden floors and tiles downstairs. There are four very good double bedrooms whilst downstairs the kitchen and dining area is open plan and a large wet room. The sitting room also has a real fire.

About Sarah Shaw

I have a very lovely son who is seven and two completely mad Jack Russells called Otis and Alfie. I have The Cornish Hen Deli in Penzance which I bought about two years ago. We have a very hectic and full life with lots of fun and laughter. The shop keeps us very busy and my son can make a mean expresso and his pasties aren't too bad either, I'm still working on mine!

Sarah Shaw purchased this house in 1998

Why Sarah Shaw chose South West Cornwall

I have been coming to Penzance for all my life and it holds a special place in my heart. I was very excited to actually move here about 12 years ago and to buy my house. It is a house that is very light and warm and it is impossible not to know what the weather is like outside. It is also in the sun all day long.

The house is in a very pretty old village with a beautiful church and excellent pub. It is a very convenient location, about 1 1/2 miles from the south coast and about 5 miles from St Ives and Sennen.

Our location, just outside of Penzance, is perfect for exploring Western Cornwall. As well as St. Michaels Mount, St. Ives, The Minack Theatre and Land’s End the Cornish coast offers plenty of hidden beaches and stunning walks.

What makes this house unique

We are sun, food and bathroom obsessed.

Your first coffee of the day is in the front garden and then you move gradually around the house finishing with your sundowner in the back garden.

We designed the house for beach living so it has a very seaside feel to it. The kitchen is a very sociable room, the cook certainly doesn't get left out of anything. Enough space for everyone to chat whilst dinner preparations are under way, without anyone getting under anyone's feet. It's a hard room to leave even after you have eaten. The island is great for chasing children round (or each other come to that).

Downstairs there is an amazing wet room, so you can come in straight from the beach and go straight into the shower. In fact there are two bathrooms and a shower room so no queuing.

Comfortable, spacious and well-situated

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely house and we had a great week there. My abiding memory of the house is the space and light. The house is stylishly decorated in bright colours. There are four large, comfortable bedrooms and three bath/shower rooms, one of which is a huge wet-room. The cavernous kitchen/dining room is very well equipped, with an Aga cooker and lots of utensils. So it's a great place to stay and easily accommodates 8 people without feeling at all crowded.

The location is just outside Penzance in the first village beyond the suburbs, so you have the benefit of being in the countryside while being only 20 minutes walk from downtown Penzance. It's easily accessible by car (just half a mile off the A30) and a short taxi ride from Penzance station. The sea is even closer, just 10 minutes walk to the nearest beach.

There is quite a lot to do in the immediate area. Gulval church is directly opposite the house with a dark, mysterious churchyard where palm trees and bamboo grow alongside ancient yew trees. The long distance 'St Michael's Way' footpath goes right past the house. There is a pub/restaurant just up the road in the village but it was temporarily closed when we were there. St Michael's Mount is a slightly longer walk or a short car ride away.

We used our cars quite a lot for day trips. We walked some of the costal paths and moorlands, we visited some of the many galleries in St Ives, and we had a very memorable evening at the Minack Theatre. We visited abandoned tin mines and mining museums, and prehistoric stones, and an iron age village. We even squeezed in a visit to one of the many great gardens in Cornwall. We loved the church at Paul. The Tate St Ives was a disappointment but the many smaller galleries in the town made up for that.

We found some great places to eat out. We particularly liked the Mexico Inn in Long Rock, which is just down the road.

I can entirely recommend this as a place to stay. It's not the cheapest of houses to rent but is good value for what it provides - a very comfortable, spacious and well-situated base for a large group of people.

Lots of room and all the amenities needed

  • 5 of 5

A lovely property within walking distance of Penzance and St. Michael's Mount. The property is huge with 4 double bedrooms and a fabulous kitchen diner. We were blessed with great weather and after long walks and days out it was great to come back to a house where you did not want for anything. We were looking forward to visiting the pub which was about 100 metres away 'The Coldstreamer' but it is closed and up for sale so that was a slight disappointment. All in all this property is great and I would recommend it to anyone visiting the area.

We were a mixed group of family members who booked Parc Webban for a week's break over half term, 4 adults, an elderly Grandmother and 2 children over the ages of 10. What a truly wonderful house this is, absolutely perfect for large families. I would describe the decor as 'shabby chic', seaside haven, it doesn't matter if the kids bring sand in from the beach or mud on their hiking boots, it's all wooden & tiled flooring, so incredibly practical and easy to keep clean. Without doubt the Kitchen/diner is the best room in the property. It's huge, you never feel crowded and the Aga on permanently whilst we were there, was a dream to come back to. It's very well-equipped, lots of everything for cooking & eating, I brought along a cafetiere (just in case) and there were 3 to be had! The bedrooms are all cavernous with sea views from 3 of them and the garden is private and perfect for sitting out on a balmy evening with a glass of wine & a BBQ on the go. Good parking for 2 cars on the drive as well.

The house is also very conveniently situated, Gulval village is tucked away from the madding crowd, although you are a mere 2mins drive from the main thoroughfare into Penzance, there are 3 supermarkets within half a mile and the beautiful coast from Lizards point round to St Ives is easily accessible. Highlights include; Hiking the coastal path between the above 2 points; coffee & cake outside on the edge of the cliff at Lizards Point; Lunch (& then dinner, it was so good!) at the Gurnard's Head pub; early breakfast at the Portreath Cafe on the beach in St Ives (best pancakes ever!); The Tinners Trail hike & the Mine ruins perched on the cliff edge at St Agnes are a must see! We parked for free at Pendeen point and then walked the coastal path, with the sea on our right, some 20mins to come across the most magnificent views of the mines prior to exploring them, a worthwhile & doable walk for children over 7yrs of age I would think; Porthcurno beach & the Minnack Theatre outstanding area; Porthleven to Loe Bar, a short coastal walk there & back & plenty of restaurants & little shops to explore after in Porthleven; Coastal path from St Ives to Pendeen Point for the more adventurous, approx 13miles and the most rugged and rockier part of the coast we had walked. Tremendous!;

All in all a fantastic week and I would more than recommend Sarah's beautiful Parc Webban house as the perfect base to explore from and relax in. 10/10 for us!

Car: recommended

The South coast is about 1 1/2 miles away, the North is about 5 miles away and beaches in between such as Porthcurno and Sennen are about 6 to 8 miles.

Newquay airport is about a 45 minute run. There are car hire offices in both Penzance and the airport.

About 2 miles from Penzance, close to delightful beaches, cliffs and countryside dotted with places of interest.
