We are near the small traditional village of Barao de Sao Joao yet only a short drive from the walled town of Lagos. Stunning countryside surrounds the villa. Within easy reach of fabulous beaches, dramatic cliffs, picturesque villages and historic towns. Both villas, Azeitona and Amendoa, are single storey properties arranged around the large sun terrace and solar heated swimming pool with uninterrupted views of the countryside. They are well equipped and self contained and may be rented individually or are ideal for groups/families wishing to holiday together. All bedrooms are en suite and have their own terraces. An additional self contained one bedroom villa available when both properties are taken together, to bring the maximum sleeping capacity up to 12. Each villa has its own outside dining and seating areas and additionally, on the lower level is the Mediterranean style garden which has several secluded seating areas and the communal BBQ and large shaded dining area.

Two bedrooms with king size beds are en suite and have a shaded terrace with lovely views to the immaculate fairways of Espiche Golf course and to the mountains of Monchique.

These bedrooms can be altered to twin bedded if preferred.

The spacious lounge dining room opens onto the terracing surrounding the 10x5m swimming pool.

A separate outside dining area overlooks the Mediterranean style garden and the communal BBQ and shaded dining area.

Amendoa is adjacent to Azeitona (3 bedroom villa) so it is ideal for parties who wish to holiday together but still retain their own privacy.

We live permanently in Portugal having moved here 5 years ago to pursue our dream of running a holiday business. We chose this property as it had all we want in a holiday - the peacefulness of the countryside, a proper swimming pool, closeness to wonderful beaches and access to great restaurants in a variety of lovely locations.

We really enjoy meeting and greeting all our guests and making new friends.

We love the Portuguese way of life, the food and wine and especially the sunshine!

Perfect get away

We have recently returned home from a wonderful holiday. We stayed in the Amendoa apartment and on arrival we were warmly greeted by Ruth and Mark. The accommodation was very clean, modern and well presented. The apartment contained all the amenities that we needed and more. The pool was really well maintained and perfect for our 8 year old who had great fun splashing about everyday. The private garden was beautiful and we enjoyed sampling the almonds and grapes while admiring the colourful flowers and outstanding mountain views. We had some tasty BBQs in the evening in the garden. This is a rural location with panoramic views and yet very convenient to local villages and attractions. The apartment is as described on owners direct and makes a wonderful base from which to travel and explore or simply relax by the pool in the sun. We hope to be back. Ruth and Mark are kind and thoughtful hosts and are on hand with some valuable local knowledge but where never intrusive. Thank you both very much.

Close enough to be out of the way

Amendoa is a lovely location, just outside the village of Espiche and a 15 mins direct route drive into Lagos. Its off the beaten track (literally) and you will need a car but it means you get peace and quiet. Mark & Ruth were incredibly helpful and hospitable, from a welcome pack including wine to suggestions of places to go and how to get there. The Villa had everything we needed for a comfortable stay and the wifi was invaluable for us plotting places to go and see.

Location

We fell in love with the peace and quiet in idyllic countryside and being surrounded by our own Olive, Almond and Fig trees. It is only 5 mins drive to the nearest beach and there is a fabulous variety to choose from. Historic Lagos (10 minutes drive) has a great atmosphere and all the excellent street-side cafes and restaurants and yet we also love ambling into the small traditional village of Barao de Sao Joao on a summers evening.

Special interest holidays:

We are close to many country and cliff walks. An experienced guide is available by prior arrangement to help manage, design and lead walking holidays if required.

Coast/Beach:

The stunning Algarve beaches of Lagos, Praia Du Luz, Burgau and Salema are a few minutes drive. Excellent for children and offering a variety of water sport activities. Lovely cliff walks and coastal paths all 5-10 minute drive.

The dramatic and secluded beaches of the West Coast are an easy 30 minute drive and a number offer surfing schools in view of the excellent surfing conditions.

Travel:

Nearest Airport is Faro which is an easy 60 min drive on the motorway A22, with Lisbon Airport and Seville Airport both about 3 hrs away. Car hire is essential.

We can arrange and book your car hire with a reputable and local company.

Distances:

The traditional village of Barao de Sao Joao, with 7 bars/cafes, several restaurants and a couple of small shops is 4km and is a delightful walk 30 min through the valley along the country lane. The historic walled town of Lagos is about 8kms with street side cafes and restaurants, boutique shops, supermarkets, fish and vegetable market and interesting churches, fort and modern marina.

Further Details:

Nearest ATM is Barao de Sao Joao (4km) and outside the village post office. In the same small street are 5 cafe/bars.

Lagos (10mins) has a selection of banks and many conveniently located ATM's, including the large supermarkets of Intermarche, Continente and Lidl. Here you will also find bustling markets for fresh fish and vegetables, cafes and restaurants on cobbled streets, stunning cliff tops and beaches. The modern marina is a great place to sit and watch from one of the many waterside bars and offers boat trips including sea fishing, dolphin watching, sailing charters and scenic viewing of the caves and grottos.

Medieval Silves (40km) is surrounded by cork forests and and orange groves and houses a Cork Museum. At the Western most peninsular Sagres (35km) and its Fort are steeped in navigational history and Cabo de Sao Vincente offers spectacular cliff walks and sea views.

The mountains of Monchique (40km) are famous for their views, walking and waters. There are also some great hillside restaurants towards the peak of Foia offering great views of the Algarve and more especially traditional country cooking like Wild Boar in Plum sauce when the fresh fish becomes too much!

The property is tranquil and with the large solar heated pool is a perfect holiday spot. There is something for everyone with the variety of restaurants, historic sites, country walks and beaches within a few minutes drive. Further afield the surfing waves of the dramatic West Coast beckon. All linen and towels including Pool and beach towels provided free of charge to help with those strict luggage allowances! With loads on the doorstep it is tempting to be busy all the time yet the facilities of the BBQ area, gardens and terracing are great for a "not having to go anywhere" day! Perfect for parties to catch up and chill together!

There are no hidden extras! Includes all linen and towels, including pool/beach towels. Outside: Both villas open onto the front terrace around the 10 x 5m solar heated pool. The outside area is spacious and the pool terracing overlooks the lower garden and countryside. Loungers and mats are provided ideal for sunbathing and relaxation. The pool is shared between Amendoa and Azeitona. The villas have private, shaded terracing leading from the bedrooms with seating and loungers in addition to the separate terraces for outside dining. The Mediterranean style garden has a large communal BBQ house and shaded dining area with huge dining table easily seating the maximum occupancy. Secluded seating areas are also dotted around the garden.
