About the property

Lovely restored farmhouse, quiet location on edge of village, close to Sibillini mountains and Adriatic coast

Casa Maddalena is an old stone farmhouse, sensitively restored. Where possible stonework has been left exposed and traditional architecture adhered to. The house is located in a small hamlet near Gualdo. It has lovely views of the mountains and the surrounding hilltop villages and countryside. There are 3 bedrooms, large living room, kitchen/diner, 'snug', 2 bathrooms and a utility room. Large garden, terrace and patio next to the bread oven!

About Penny Bushe

We are an English couple from North London who fell in love with Italy many years ago. Having toured around Le Marche, we eventually bought an old farmhouse near Gualdo which we have restored (doing a lot of the work ourselves!) and are now renting out so that you can enjoy staying there and spending time in this wonderful part of Italy.

Why Penny Bushe chose Gualdo

Having been to Tuscany and Umbria, we decided to look at Le Marche and eventually found an old farmhouse to buy and restore in a beautiful and tranquil location. It is situated in a small hamlet only 2km from the hilltop village of Gualdo where you will find shops and amenities. It is necessary to have a car to explore the beautiful countryside and towns/villages and the amazing Sibillini mountains which are visible from the house!

What makes this farmhouse unique

The house is very comfortable, tastefully decorated and conveniently located, close to a village and surrounded by beautiful countryside and pretty hilltop towns, only 30 minutes from the Sibillini mountains and 45 minutes from the coast. A perfect place to do as much or as little as you like!

Stayed at this lovely farmhouse in June this year and what a delight it was. It has been beautifully and sympathetically renovated and suited our requirements perfectly. There are lovely views of either the mountains or nearby villages across the fields and orchards. It is certainly very quiet and a car is a must but the mountains and coast are within fairly easy reach. To the front of the building is a patio which is ideal for breakfast in the morning sunshine and at the side a bbq area for either lunch or evening meals. The kitchen is well equipped and there is even a spa pool in which to sit and enjoy a glass or two of wine. We definitely intend to return another year as there are still lots more areas and villages to explore and return to the Piano Grande to see more of the fabulous wild flowers.

Notes on accommodation: The house and garden would not suit very young children. The spa pool is approx 2 metres round and semi-rigid, lovely to cool off in! Outside: Front and side gardens, mostly laid to lawn; fig, fruit and olive trees. Terrace/patio to front/side of house, with vine-covered pergola for shade. Raised decking for small spa pool (for summer months). Garden furniture, barbecue, hammock. Utility Room: Washer/dryer, ironing board/iron, clothes horse. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service on request: Towels and linen included at the commencement of each rental, with additional towels available (inc beach towels). Cleaning will take place at the end of the rental period. Other: "Snug" with wood burning stove, CD/radio player.

Beautiful, well equipped home with good access to the Sibillini Mountains

This house is highly recommended. The description is completely accurate - it is well equipped in terms of kitchen and dining items, has a lovely, large, sunny lounge area and plenty of external seating areas in sunshine or shade. The showers were excellent and the beds extremely comfortable. The spa was indeed a welcome cooling off spot! The third bedroom is up a rather steep flight of stairs in the eaves on the top floor and does not have opening windows. We did not need to use this double room, but noticed it got rather hot whilst we were there (and would have been a long way from either bathroom if any nighttime trips might have been required!). Gualdo is a 20 minute walk and has a good pizzeria (also serving pasta dishes) which is popular with locals, a little bar and a small range of useful shops. As with many small hilltop towns in this part of Le Marche, the earthquakes last year have been quite damaging. We were surprised that so many historic buildings and churches were closed with no prospect of reopening any time soon. However, the scenery is stunning and the walking in the Sibillini Mountains superb. This house would be a comfortable base for anyone interested in mountain walking or exploring this beautiful area of Le Marche. Penny was a delightful and responsive host. I recommend her home highly.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your very kind review and we are so glad you enjoyed the house, the beautiful area and particularly the Sibillini mountains! I would like to mention that in the top bedroom there are two Velux windows and a double window (maybe you did not notice as the shutters were closed), all of which open! We are sure that by next Spring more historic buildings will be open - but we must be patient, and it is a good reason to visit to help the local communities affected.

Beautiful tranquil house unbeatable area of Le Marche

We had a wonderful holiday in this beautifully arranged and decorated house. We were welcomed and everything was well set up for arrival and comfort! We simply loved the area delicious food incredible views and dats out on the mountains and visiting and discovering beautiful places and walks. We discovered a great restarant and cocktail bar / petrol station with wonderful views! We feel there is so much more to see and do. Highly recommended!

40 minutes by car to the Adriatic coast resorts of Porto San Giorgio, Civitanova, etc. The beaches are very clean (Blue Flag) and the sea is calm and warm in the summer months.


Ancona airport is the closest, being some 80 minutes by car, a car being essential. Pescara and Perugia airports are approximately 2 hours away. All are served by Ryanair. Rome and Bologna are about 3-4 hours by car and/or train.


Gualdo is our nearest village, 2km away - a 5 minute drive or 20 minute "passagiata"! Sarnano, San Ginesio, Penna San Giovani and Sant'Angelo are picturesque villages all within 20 minutes of Gualdo. Macerata is the provincial capital (30 minutes away), a lovely town with a good market on Wednesdays and open air theatre in July/August at the Sferistero. Assisi can be reached in about 90 minutes over the mountains. Lake Fiastra is a must to visit and swim in and is 30 minutes by car.

Gualdo has 2 small supermarkets, grocer, baker, bank, pharmacy, medical centre, post office, butcher, cleaners, restaurant, and bar. There is a lovely park, a tennis court, and football ground!
