Casa do Ferreiro is an imaginative restoration of an 18th century former blacksmith's house with many unique features. The house is spread over three floors with hand painted murals in many rooms and original artwork on the walls.There are three bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms and 2 separate living rooms on the upper floors.The dining room and kitchen area are on the ground floor.There is a small internal courtyard off the kitchen with steps up to the first floor alfresco dining terrace.Conveniently located just off the church square in the picturesque and historic village of Colares within the Sintra UNESCO World Heritage site.Colares has many amenities to hand including restaurants,cafés,bank,chemist,grocery stores,bakery,butcher and post office. The local beaches include Praia da Adraga,Praia Grande and Praia das Maças are all within a 5 minute drive.There are more beaches near Cascais and Estoril which are a stunning 15 minute drive away along the Atlantic coast road.

A key to insider's Portugal

This elegantly restored house in a traditional village between Sintra and the dramatic seacoast is an insider’s key to Portugal. The owners have respected the centuries-old property’s sensibilities while adding the necessities of modern life such as WiFi, a washing machine and chef’s kitchen. Our host, Guy, pointed us toward the best restaurants, markets and beaches, providing a helpful array of maps, leaflets and business cards of his favorites. Knowing this spot is a bit off the tourist trail, the owners sent us detailed driving directions from the airport as well as an enormously helpful map of Old Colares. By blending old and new with Portuguese and British, the owners of Casa do Ferreiro have created a place where even the savviest travelers will experience a sense of discovery.

Great Location and located in real Portugal

We were very pleased with our stay at this property. The accommodation is spacious and is a proper old and historic town house with lots of character. The location of the property in relation to surround attractions is also very good. If you want to stay in a proper Portuguese house in a real Portuguese village full of locals with next to no tourist then this could be the place for you to stay, we loved it..... proper Portugal. We drank with the locals in the cafe opposite and there is a good restaurant a few 100yds down the road. There are loads of other local restaurant with excellent quality food. The owner did ask for a deposit, but rest assured that this money was promptly returned to our account at the end of our stay.

Activity and Interests


Praia da Adraga is one of the nearest beaches with a good fish restaurant is 5 minutes drive. Praia Grande is also 5 minutes drive and offers more facilities and more restaurants. It is a popular surfer beach but it is spacious and good for everyone.Praia das Maças is about 10 minutes drive and offers sea-water pools and tennis as well as numerous restaurants in this coastal village. Praia do Guincho is a 15 minute drive on the coast road to Cascais and has a spectacular setting.


Lisbon Airport is approximately 40 minutes drive with modern motorway links to Sintra and then Colares is a further 10 minutes on the picturesque local route.

Lisbon is serviced by most national schedule airlines and many so-called low-cost airlines. For info see the skyscanner site which will offer a full range of all airline types including tour operator flight-only charters. Car Hire is needed to reach beaches and for outdoor activities but not absolutely essential.


Monserrate Palace - 4kms.

Sintra Town - 8kms - Moorish Castle, Pena Palace, Quinta da Regaleira.

Cascais - 15kms - Guincho beach, dining, shopping, golf, marina, Estoril Riviera. Ericeira - 30kms - Coastal resort and fishing port - visit Mafra en-route.

Lisbon - 35kms - Bairro Alto, Alfama, Sao Jorge Castle, Belem, Jeronimos.

  • Notes on accommodation: Casa do Ferreiro is a deceptively large house and has an internal built area of 240 sq.m ( 2,600 sq.feet ) divided equally over three floors. Outside: There is an internal patio access from the first floor living room and from the kitchen for alfresco dining.The second floor bedroom has a small sunbathing balcony. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Linen and towels are provided and the house is clean on arrival. Bookings for two weeks will have a linen and towel change for the second week. Other: The ground floor has a feature stone floor for the hall, dining room and kitchen area. The large wooden dining table seats ten people under the feature faux chandelier. This large living area is great for entertaining.
