About charlotte bauer

We're South African and live between Johannesburg and another converted barn next door to La Baïonnette. We are here if you need us and we're really friendly, but we respect your privacy. In other words, unlike some of the B&B types we have all fled screaming from, we will not hover, ply you with history factoids or make you look at photos of our renovations. So that's settled then: you are very welcome at La Baïonnette.

charlotte bauer purchased this farmhouse in 2006

Why charlotte bauer chose Tarn

We fell in love with La Baïonnette the moment we saw it. The fields beyond the house were full of June poppies and the late-afternoon sun drenched everything in soft mauve light. Since then we have updated this 1840s house for maximum comfort and easy living. We added 2 en suite bathrooms and converted an adjoining barn to create an open-flow living room, cook's kitchen and double volume dining room.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Lounge around the pool in perfect peace and privacy, lazy meals under a starry sky on the covered terrace ... or party till dawn without disturbing the neighbours who are over the hill and far away! La Baïonnette, snug in a secluded valley, makes a perfect retreat for the world-weary. Yet with historic villages, towns, activities and two lively cosmopolitan cities within striking distance, there's plenty of sightseeing and shopping to be had just over the horizon. The village of Cahuzac-sur-Vere is 4kms from the house and offers all essentials for the sweet life - bar, bakery, bank and the best family-owned deli and butchery for miles.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"I stayed at La Baïonnette for several weeks in June and July 2010, and it is without doubt one of the most memorable holidays I've ever spent in France. The swimming pool has become my benchmark for what constitutes a fantastic pool; the cherries on the many trees around the property are the sweetest I've ever eaten; and the Soccer World Cup acquired new meaning because I watched it over the rim of a glass filled with pastis or Champagne. I walked and walked, then cycled some, then practised my woeful French on the very sympathetic neighbours; and then watched the sunflowers grow and the wheat ripen. This place is heaven." Superb again

  • 5 of 5

This was our second visit to La Baionnette after a 3 year gap. It really is the perfect place to get away from it all, but without sacrificing vital mod cons such as wifi to keep teenagers happy. The house is really well equipped and comfortable. The pool looks out over acres of fields, and there are butterflies and bees aplenty in the lavender. Charlotte is a great hostess - unobtrusive yet available to give advice and help when needed. It is remote - the nearest bakery is around 3km away - but that's its charm. Thoroughly recommended - there is lots to see and do in the area as well.

Superb Gite in a magical part of France.

  • 5 of 5

We have recenty returned from a second visit to La Baionette having fallen in love last year with this wonderful property and its location in a largely undiscovered part of France.

The house itself has all you will ever want from a holiday home in France - full of character and perfectly equipped including the all essential wi-fi for posting pictures of yourself sunning yourself by the "to die for" pool. That will make your friends and colleagues at home wish they had booked the place too!

Everything in this house is of high quality: Bedrooms are very comfortable - with proper mattresses (not the cheap French versions); the kitchen is excellent complete with range cooker, and outside you have the perfect shaded seating area for al fresco dining. During our two stays the weather has been kind enough that we were able to eat outside most days (for breakfast, lunch and dinner). A perfect enviornment for watching the sun set, and observing the wildlife - including swallows cleaning the pool for us of floating insects, deer in the fields, buzzards circling, the hoot of owls at night and the constant buzz of the crickets and grasshoppers.

For our stay this year we embraced the local atmosphere by "doing" even less - having taken up a few of Charotte's excellent restaurant recommendations in the house guide. In the surrounding area you will find the most beautiful unspoiled countryside, with hilltop villages with good restaurants and gorges for kayaking. The whole area is interspersed with vinyards and fields of sunflowers. Magic. And a big bonus is that the area is relatively quite in terms of tourist numbers...sort of like the Dordogne but without the crowds.

The owner Charlotte is charming and will go out of her way to help you have a great holiday whilst staying unobstrusively in the background. The gite itself is very private, but you have the added insurance of having the owner on site when you just can't work out how to turn on the gas oven, or when you need to know where the nearest decent restaurant is...

All in all, we love this place. Highly recommended. I am sure we will be back...

Time in the Tarn

  • 5 of 5

First time to this relaxed region of France. Full of pretty, peaceful and picture perfect villages, wonderful wine and a great place to chill (both wine and soul) house was a great retreat with everything to make it feel like home for a fortnight . Favourite past time sitting outside early evening with a glass of rose, dining by 'fairy light' the sun went down.

Travel:

La Baïonnette is an hour's drive from Toulouse-Blagnac airport. A car is essential.

Distances:

1km outside the village of Vieux. 4.5km from Cahuzac-sur-Vere, a gorgeous village with a family-run deli, butchery and bakery, as well as a bar, banks, etc.

15km from Gaillac, a bustling market town (railway station, large supermarkets, etc). 12km from Cordes-sur-Ciel (historic Bastide hilltop village). 25km from Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val (kayaking, river swimming, etc). 1-hour drive to Toulouse-Blagnac airport. 2-hour drive to the Spanish border and ski resort at Andorra.

Further Details:
