Gite in Pretot-Sainte-Suzanne, St. Mere Eglise, Manche, Normandy, France - Good Location For Visiting D-day Beaches, Mont St. Michel, Ste. Mere Eglise

La Senelle is a 2 bedroom gite sleeping up to 4 people. Children are welcome, but because of the river we recommend that they be of school age. The gite is built in traditional local Normandy stone in the longere style. The thick walls ensure the house is cool in summer and warm in winter. Double glazed French doors lead from the outside terrace area into the main living space, fitted kitchen and dining area, Outside is a private terrace, and also access to our walled garden with pergola, BBQ and outside furniture, and a path that leads to the River Senelle. We even have our own private island if you really want to get away from it all, and watch the family of resident water voles or feed the passing ducks!

About the Owner

.We (Colin & Joy) finally moved permanently to France in 2009 after many years enjoying the people, culture and food of Normandy. We had a holiday home nearby which we also let as a gite, and sold it to pay for the restoration of our current house and gite in Pretot. Colin retired hurt after a long spell in the police force, and Joy had her own antique business specialising in French antiques furniture from Normandy, which is how our interest in France began. We have found the local population to be extremely welcoming and friendly, and we were overjoyed (and surprised!) to find out that our property had been selected for 3rd prize in the district 'concours de fleurissement' - villages in bloom competition 2011.

We are on hand to help you with any questions or advice you need to help you enjoy your holiday, but rest-assured as well as access to our garden areas to the garden areas you have your own private terrace too!

‘We’ve had a wonderful holiday and have been excellently provided for by Colin & Joy what a lovely holiday home you have created! Some of the things we’ve enjoyed in the area: Two quirky but fascinating chateaux, Chateau de Ste Suzanne (which you can walk to) and Chateau de Crosville sur Douve. La Maison des Marais at St- Come-du-Mont- interesting displays and walks (and boat trips) A coast walk round Cap de la Hague-spectacular scenery. At Cartaret we found a lovely quiet beach- safely overseen and beautiful to swim here. The WW2 museum at St Mere Eglise is worth a visit, the parachutist dangling from the church tower gives a good photo! We also liked St Vaast la Hougue – nice harbour and pretty town (big car park at sea side by the harbour)., Utah beach also interesting. Fantastic family holiday. The owners Joy and Colin have been great, and added to the friendly experience. Lots of history locally and amazing beaches to the west. Location is spot on.

Wonderful stay!

We just spent a wonderful week in beautiful Normandy. This was our first gite experience and we were delighted with the accommodations.

The location was perfect for visiting the D-Day Beaches, Mont St. Michel, and the entire Manch area. Colin and Joy were wonderful hosts and we highly recommend Le Senelle especially to all from "across the pond"!!

A great place to stay

This was our third visit to La Senelle and we loved it just as much as the first time. A lovely property and garden. Well equipped and in a good location for the beach and places of interest. We just wish we could stay longer. Colin & Joy are lovely hosts and very accommodating. This won't be our last visit.

A big thank you to Colin and joy for a fantastic holiday in their beautiful gite. They are so friendly and accommodating and helped us out when our satnav failed and we had no laptop. The gite, garden and village was beautiful and it was ideally situated for visiting all the attractions around Normandy. We all felt it was like a home from home and cannot recommend this gite highly enough.

We purchased La Senelle as we were looking to be part of a village community but we also liked the privacy of a large walled private garden.

Special interest holidays:

The fact we are situated iin the Parc Naturel des Marais and our riverside location means we are ideal for nature lovers and bird-watchers alike. Beach activities such as kite-surfing and sailing are nearby, as is horse-riding or riding bikes along the hundreds of kilometres of specifically adapted cycleways.

Other sporting and leisure activities available nearby include; tennis; golf; canoeing; windsurfing; karting and ice-skating, all of which we can help you organise.


25 minutes from the D-day beaches to the east, and well placed for the beautiful sandy coast to the west, and the ports of Carteret and Portbail.


By Road from Cherbourg. Follow the road signs from the Ferry port for Caen (N13) Stay on the N13 and after 21km take the exit towards: D2 Valognes coutances Saint Sauveur le Vicomite. Go through Valognes with the main square on your right andf follow the signs for Periers D24. You will pass by Marteuville then Picauville, and as you come into Pretot 6km later, our house is on the left after the village shop, 300m after the picnic site sign.


St. Mere Eglise 16km. Bayeux 40km. Utah Beach 20km. Cherbourg 40km. Caen 70km. Mont St. Michel 90km. St. Malo 130km.

Further Details:

The peninsula of La Manche is surrounded by over 200km of fantastic and varied coastline. Starting on the west coast, the bay of Mont St. Michel sweeps round to the glamorous spa resort of Granville with its Christian Dior Museum and gardens. Some of the finest oysters are farmed in and around Agon-Coutainville. Miles of accessible and clean sandy beaches stretch up to the chic boutique ports of Barneville-Carteret. Following the route des Caps, or the sentier des douaniers (coastal footpath) is a great way to explore the cliffs and coves of the pink granite coast up to the rugged landscape of La Hague. Heading east from Cherbourg with its wealth of shops, galleries and state of the art aquarium, the region of Val de Saire, with its ports of St.Vaast and Barfleur, famed for their mussels and the fascinating Ile de Tatihou nature reserve. The plains of the East coast are home to some of Normandy's finest stud farms, and Utah beach, which marks the beginning of the landing beaches, war cemeteries and museums.

Inland, the landscape is defined by traditional agricultural practices, which over the centuries have created the 'bocage', a well preserved network of small fields, hedgerows and ancient sunken lanes. Dairy herds are the backbone of Norman farming and the world-reknowned Camembert and Creme Fraiche must be sampled along with a good bottle of cider (or Calvados!), purchased from one the many local producers. Normandy boasts many fine manoirs, Châteaux and gardens, many of which are open to the public.
