BLISSFUL SECLUDED VILLA & POOL WITH PANORAMIC SEA VIEWS, SPECTACULAR PENINSULA

Overview

Property

Updated: 01-Dec-2016
Villa in Amousso Bay, near Vasiliki, Lefkada, Ionian Islands, Greece Stunning Villa In Dramatic Landscape Of Sea And Mountains,8 Mins Drive To Nearest Beach/Taverna

Villa Arbutus is the last property on the dramatic Lipsopergos peninsula - secluded and private but close to beaches and the famous Amousso taverna. The sunsets are theatrical. The wildlife abounds and includes dolphins, eagle owls and many migratory birds. Constructed in wood with stone floors the single storey property is split level and open to the cooling sea breeze in the afternoons.

Amousso Bay beach is 8/10 mins drive. The closest beach is a really sweet little cove 1.5km - about 2 mins drive and then a short walk down the hillside or 10 to 15 minutes walk from the villa. The main beach is in Amousso Bay (with recliners and umbrellas usually free of charge) where there is also an excellent taverna with great home cooking. The nearest shops are in Marantochori (about 6km) and Vasiliki, the main town and port, is about 12km. Vasiliki has a host of restaurants and cafes around the harbour and 2 large supermarkets. Very popular with sailors and windsurfers, it hums in the evenings.

Of course there are different ways to holiday.....Maybe you would like to swim, laze in the hammock, sunbathe or perhaps sit under an olive tree with your favourite music and a good book. Or, perhaps a more active holiday swimming and snorkeling in the sea at the nearby beach – perhaps followed by lunch/dinner, coffee, or a drink at the excellent and friendly taverna.

The villa is a great base for walking and cycling as the area is criss-crossed with many tracks. A good map and careful navigation make it perfectly possible to travel in safety all over the island without using the main roads. This is a great way to explore and you're likely to encounter interesting sites, less well known locations and some magnificent views over the whole spectacular Ionian chain.

If you like beaches, Lefkas is known for some of the most superb beaches in the Mediterranean and the award winning Porto Katsiki with its golden sands and clear turquoise sea is only 30 mins by car from the villa. Closest beaches to the villa are mentioned above.

Vassiliki, the capital of southern Lefkas is within very easy reach of Arbutus – and is a sailing and windsurfing paradise - one of the top European windsurfer locations. With its harbours and port, Vassiliki hums in the evening with al fresco dining along the quay, many bars and night spots. It's also possible to take cruises from here to visit the nearby islands – you might well see dolphins along the way. Many guests last year enjoyed skippered/unskippered sailing trips from Nidri. These cater for all levels of sailing expertise and are an exciting additional possibility for your holiday. There are stables close to Vassiliki for anyone wanting to ride.

The monastery at Marandahori, the nearest village, houses the relics of St George. Stone artefacts and pots displayed at The Archaeological Museum of Lefkas were found at the Neolithic cave Chirospilia in Evghiras again only a short distance from Arbutus. There's the Venetian Fort near the swing bridge joining the mainland and at Aktion the extensive ruins of Nikopolis built when Caesar defeated Antony&Cleopatra; in 31BC. For local culture, Karyia in the mountains is the lace making capital and the winery producing Lefkadan wine and offering tours and tastings are both interesting trips. The island is only 40 miles long so everything is close.

. Whether you want a restful, recuperative time, one more active and challenging or maybe a combination, if you choose to stay in this blissful and magical place you are offered the memorable holiday of your choice.

Guestbook comments from the owner

My family and I very much enjoyed our 2 weeks at Arbutus. It is a secluded location yet very close to beaches, shops, tavernas. The views are fantastic. We would go back any time and are very happy to recommend this villa. Alexandra, Paris

Thanks for an absolutely wonderful stay at the beautiful 'Eco-house'. Dale & Rachel, US.

I remember, on arrival, standing in the moonlight on the terrace looking over the bay, hearing the silence and smelling the peace. We breathed a mutual sigh of contentment...In the daylight...the views were stunning and the calm and quiet (and the absolute privacy) a miracle cure for us! Chrissie, UK.

We had a fantastic holiday. The setting is fabulous. Total privacy and isolation among olive trees above a beautiful bay yet a lovely little beach within walking distance. M & T, UK.

A great holiday and the seclusion and peace is wonderful. Alan C Melbourne

We had one of our best vacations ever. Thank you for sharing your oasis with us! Per, Sweden

Wonderful villa in a glorious setting

  • 5 of 5

This is a wonderful place for relaxing. The outside could not be better with the view, the pool and the glorious sunsets. Inside everything is very comfortable with a well equipped kitchen if you can tear yourself away from the local restaurants.

The local beaches are walkable with the larger one having a taverna and also sunshades on the beach.

As is mentioned it is very advisable to hire a 4 x 4 to drive along the track but it soon becomes just part of the daily routine.

If you like peace and quiet then I can thoroughly recommend this villa.

Wonderful relaxing house in perfect location

  • 5 of 5

We were thrilled with the place on arrival. Perfect for a relaxing and restful stay. The views from the house and around the pool area are truly outstanding. The house surprisingly cool in the heat, spacious, comfortable and well equipped.

The owner was incredibly helpful in helping arrange our trip which meant we were able to organise it well and just enjoy ourselves.

Would definitely recommend the property for small families or for couples. The peace and tranquility of the location is simply wonderful.

A truly wonderful retreat...

  • 5 of 5

We found peace and tranquility at this wonderful house on the Lipsopergos Peninsula. Very secluded and private which was just what we wanted. The house nestles in ancient olive groves and has a timeless quality, perfect for relaxing the mind and attuning oneself to the elements! Sylvie, the owner, provided all the information needed and was very helpful and straight forward. The house is very well maintained, well designed and has a nautical feel to it. From the pool there are great views across the bay, where one can watch boats sailing by. There are some lovely small beaches close by and a great taverna at Amoussa with very friendly waiters, which serves fresh fish and traditional food. The chilled Vertzamo wine is great with a sea bream! Thanks again Sylvie and Bob.

Peaceful, but exciting eco villa in stunning setti

  • 5 of 5

Stayed for one week end of August. Sylvie was very helpful in planning our trip from initial booking to hints re flights.

Definitely need a 4 x4 jeep - Chris at Alex rent a car met us at airport with a Suzuki Jimny - bags will fit in if you only have 2!

Track to villa took 30 mins 1st drive up - by end of week only took 10 mins and kids loved the off road experience - standing up holding on - like riding a bucking broncho !

Villa simple in decor and very clean - stunning views , lovely pool area - all equipment we needed on hand.

Local caretaker contacts also very helpful when we needed them.

Loads of beaches - from secluded to busy - very, very clean, too many great places to eat to mention, boat trips to islands, or chilling by the pool.

Wonderful relaxing week but with enough excitement to keep the kids happy too - thank you very much!

A peaceful hideaway

  • 5 of 5

Me and my boyfriend stayed in Villa Arbutus for one week, and our experience was great from start to finish. Sylvie is incredibly friendly and helpful. Not only did she provide us with excellent beach and restaurant recommendations – Rachi is one of the most special places we have ever eaten, you are literally dining above the clouds – but she helped arrange our rental car plus grocery delivery.

Since the place is so far removed from everything, you will need a car if you are going to stay here. I would recommend a jeep or 4WD due to the condition of the road; it can get pretty bumpy at times. There are a couple of beaches about 15 minutes by foot from the villa, and there is also a small taverna, but the whole island is beautiful and definitely worth exploring.

The villa itself is clean, comfortable, and has all the amenities you would expect. There are plenty of places to relax, and the view is simply stunning. Overall, the property is more spacious than the pictures make it out to be. If you are looking for an affordable holiday rental with complete privacy, this is the place for you.

Location

From the Owner

We came by chance to the island of Lefkas on a sailing holiday and fell in love with its funky undeveloped character, its mixture of the traditional Greece - goat bells, farmers travelling by donkey and stunning scenery. We decided to buy a little hovel to do up - but everywhere we looked there was some sort of problem - and then we discovered the area around Amoussa Bay and the remote Lipsopirgos peninsula (one of the least developed parts of the island) and fell under its spell. After several diversions we eventually bought an ancient 1-acre olive grove. We designed the house, used local tradesmen, finishing it ourselves. We wanted to keep it as ecological as possible so we built in wood and installed photo-electric panels and solar hot water with gas water + wood stove for cooler times
