Activity and Interests
Cliff Cottage looks out to sea, and the harbour walls are just a couple of minutes walk down the hill.
Polstreath beach is a short walk away reached via the coastal path outside the cottage, Portmellon beach is a small shingly beach 1.5 miles away, the nearby village of Gorran Haven has a lovely safe sandy beach that is popular with families and Charlestown (20 mins drive) has a large, stoney very safe private harbour beach with tall ships and childrens playground.
The nearest airport is Newquay airport, 45 mins drive away.
The nearest train station is St Austell, 15 mins drive away.
Mevagissey village 5 mins walk. Lost Gardens of Heligan 10 mins drive. Gorran Haven 10 mins drive. St Austell 15 mins drive. Charlestown 20 mins drive. Eden Project 25 mins drive. Fowey 30 mins drive. St Mawes 35 mins drive. Truro 35 mins drive. Lizard Point 1hr 30 mins drive.
There are a number of local produce, clothes and interiors shops in Mevagissey to browse around, as well as a greengrocers, Post Office, Boots pharmacy, Lloyds Bank and minimarket.
Mevagissey is fantastic if you love fish - local fishermen can provide you with charter boats to try and land some mackerel, bass or even shark, or for those without sea legs, buy the fish straight off the boat in the harbour and cook it back at the cottage or eat it in one of the local restaurants or pubs which were once the haunts of Cornish smugglers!
As well as fresh fish, Cornish fudge and Cornish pasties, which can also be bought in the village, other locally sourced food and drink can be found at Lobbs Farm Shop, winner of Taste of the West 2009 Gold Award or sampled at the nearby St Austell Brewery, Cornwall's oldest independent family brewery that has been going for over 150 years.
After all the indulgence, you can walk it off along the South West Coast Path, which runs outside the cottage. Situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the walks from Mevagissey are amazing. But if you can only make it to the top of the hill behind the cottage, an awesome view of the sea awaits you from the cliff top park.
If you'd rather be bobbing on the sea, take in the fantastic coastline by hiring a motor boat, taking a trip on one of the boats in the harbour, or going further afield on the ferry that takes you from the lighthouse to the pretty yachting town of Fowey.
Other nearby towns to explore include the unspolit Georgian village of Charlestown with its tall ships and Shipwreck Museum, and the historic town of Lostwithiel, once the capital of Cornwall and home to the ancient Restormel Castle.
There are a number of beautiful gardens to lose yourself in - just up the road is the Lost Gardens of Heligan, 200 acres of mysterious gardens and estate, and the Eden Project, dubbed the 'Eighth Wonder of the World' by some, just a short drive away.
