About the property

House in Dinan, Brittany / Cote D'Armor, France - Medieval Town House Just Steps From All That Dinan Has To Offer

A wonderfully restored 14th century half timbered town house situated close to shops and restaurants in the medieval city of Dinan. La Vieille Auberge is believed to have been built in 1386 - Artisan style, with a slate roof, (originally thatched), granite stone block walls and half timbered frontage. Reputedly one of the oldest houses in Dinan. The house has been carefully restored maintaining many of the old world features and charm while also being updated with 21st Century amenities. The house is ideally located, close by the English garden and the church of St Sauvier. The accommodation is split over three floors, kitchen and comfortable lounge (with gas fire) on the ground floor, two bedrooms with en-suite and separate WC on the first floor and large sitting room with wet bar (fridge and sink), TV, DVD, IPOD Dock and French Day bed on the second floor.

About Noel Hughes

Noel and Cindy Hughes live in England just outside of London with their two daughters - both now in university and their dog Pepsi! Cindy is a native of LA California and Noel is part Brit and part Irish. Noel spent many years in CA where he met Cindy. Noel and Cindy discovered Dinan on a family holiday in 1997 and fell in love with the town.

Noel Hughes purchased this house in 2006

Why Noel Hughes chose Dinan

We happened upon Dinan many, many years ago and really fell in love with the town, the cobbled streets and the friendly people. We especially were facinated by the fact that there were so many houses still standing from the 14th and 15th century that were still being used as everyday accommodation - you don't see much of that in CA!

Dinan is also a place where you could easily spend a week just hanging around the town, shopping, eating, walking and visiting its many attractions. There is also the added benefit of being a close to so many wonderful beaches along the Brittany coast.

What makes this house unique

The house is everything we wanted! It's old old old, but we have added the essentials to make the house comfortable and ever so practical. We do not consider ourselves owners of the house but simply caretakers as we know it will be around long after we are gone!

Guestbook comments from the owner

'We had a great time at the house. It is so full of character. The house had everything that you could wish for and was furnished beautifully. The children thought the house was magical. We look forward to returning to France again soon'.

'We had such a marvellous time in Dinan ... much due to your memorable house! It was so well located for us. We had friends who rented a house on the Jerzual and they had a difficult time parking and by the end of their stay were exhausted with the walk from their accommodation to the old town. You must sometimes pinch yourself to ensure that you are not dreaming, to be responsible for such a gem'

'I must say, just like others, your house is amazing! It just looks so lovely from outside, I am sure we are in many photos!'

Location

Coast/Beach:

The Brittany Coast can be reached by car in 30 minutes. There are many beautiful beaches, coves and small towns all within a short drive from the house.

Travel:

The nearest airport is at Dinard, approximately 20 minutes from the house. Ryanair flies directly to Dinard from a number of locations in the UK. St Malo is approximately 30 minutes by car and Caen (which has a fast ferry) is approximately 2 hours by car.

Distances:

The house is located in the centre of the old town. From the town you can walk down the steep Jerzual cobbled street to the port - approximately 10 minutes. The walk back up from the port takes a little longer and is very dependent on your fitness.

Further Details:

From La Vieille Auberge explore the delights of Dinan; one of the most beautiful places in Brittany. This fortified town, established in the 9th century, overlooks the river Rance and the stone ramparts now enclose a uniquely preserved 11th century town. The centre of Dinan is filled with over 50 lively bars, cafes and restaurants. Specialities include a bewildering variety of galettes, delicious seafood and of course, cider. Thursday is market day in the main square of Dinan which celebrates Breton fare. Explore the pattern of narrow streets and cobbled alleys, crammed with Medieval timbered houses, many now housing quaint gift, antique and craft shops. See Renaissance Manors, town houses, built by East India Company officers, and Villas used by the British in Victorian times. Explore 2,800m of ramparts and 12 towers, also statues, churches, squares, gateways and gardens.

In Dinan there is a theatre and a cinema, and 2 swimming pools. Street festivals include the medieval Fete des Remparts. Dinan's art deco railway station has its own railway museum. Climb the 158 steps of the Tour de L'Horloge (the record is 3 minutes 47 seconds) to see nearly everything.

Walk through the centre of Dinan and down the steep Rue de Jerzual past galleries and craft shops, through the gate to the Port on the River Rance. There are more bars and restaurants, 2 bridges, boats for hire and riverboat excursions. Continue along the Rance tow-path to Lehon with its Abbey, Castle and heated open air swimming pool.

Fantastic house

  • 5 of 5

This house was perfect for location, atmosphere and amenities. The house was very well equipped for our stay with all the benefits of a bustling town on the doorstep. Everything was so well organised many thanks to the owners for changing our booking as we were late getting from Ireland due to a hurricane and storm. Also to Sean for the handover which went very smoothly. We want to tell everyone how good this was but would also like to keep it our secret hideaway for future trips as we will be back.

We loved Dinan and the house. Staying in the old town could have been a hassle, but the owner's help made it so easy.

Character filled house in the heart of a medieval town

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful week's break in Dinan. La Vielle Auberge was well equipped and comfortable - just watch out for the low ceilings! Would thoroughly recommend :)

Owner's Response: Hi Geoff, Thank you for your review. We are very happy that you enjoyed the house and the delights of Dinan. The door in the sitting room and the master bedroom are low, but I think you would agree add to the charm of the house. Thanks again for staying with us and we hope you will come stay with us again in the future. Noel

enchantic medieval holiday home in Dinan

  • 5 of 5

We and our almost grownups (17 and 18) had a wonderful time at the "Vieille Auberge". The contact to our host and his representative was easy and enjoyable, perfect customer service and very clean. The house is a jewel. It´s been restaurated and furnished with great care and heartwarming regard for details. It´s a house for people who appreciate old things and it serves also the comfort of the modern world (kitchen, bath; media). People with physical handicap or very small children (->3-4y) may have difficulties with the small stairs. For all other it`s a wonderful place to stay - a privilege to be there! Dinan is a charming village - in the centre of the town but in a rather quiet alley, much to see (mediaval town and castles, museums), much to do (kayaking, bicycling, walking, listening to the music in town, shopping, rent a motorboat, nice pub and many restaurants in short walking distance), short distance to the sea and the coastal path (by car or train - St Malo) and so much to see in the surroundings. Two weeks aren´t enough

This is a very special home!

  • 5 of 5

This summer we rented 8 houses in eight weeks across France and Spain and this was our favorite. Not only is it comfortable, it is incredible cool. The endless authentic details of house give it so much personality. We are a very tall family so we regularly bumped our heads on the timbers and door frames but it was worth it! Sean (the local caretaker) was very cheerful and helpful in getting us situated. Noel (the owner) was easy to work with and runs a very professional operation. The house is well organized, well stocked and well loved. I would not hesitate to reserve this home.

A unique house in an excellent location

  • 5 of 5

This house is one of a kind with a lot of character but all the facilities you need for a holiday. It is in a brilliant location as everything you need is within walking distance. However if you want to explore the area it is in a good spot for many and varied day trips too. A big thank you to the owners who have thought of everything and are willing to share this beautiful house.
