About Noel Hughes

Noel and Cindy Hughes live in England just outside of London with their two daughters - both now in university and their dog Pepsi! Cindy is a native of LA California and Noel is part Brit and part Irish. Noel spent many years in CA where he met Cindy. Noel and Cindy discovered Dinan on a family holiday in 1997 and fell in love with the town.

Noel Hughes purchased this house in 2006

Why Noel Hughes chose Dinan area

We happened upon Dinan many, many years ago and really fell in love with the town, the cobbled streets and the friendly people. We especially were facinated by the fact that there were so many houses still standing from the 14th and 15th century that were still being used as everyday accommodation - you don't see much of that in CA!

Dinan is also a place where you could easily spend a week just hanging around the town, shopping, eating, walking and visiting its many attractions. There is also the added benefit of being a close to so many wonderful beaches along the Brittany coast.

What makes this house unique

The house is everything we wanted! It's old old old, but we have added the essentials to make the house comfortable and ever so practical. We do not consider ourselves owners of the house but simply caretakers as we know it will be around long after we are gone!

Guestbook comments from the owner

'We had a great time at the house. It is so full of character. The house had everything that you could wish for and was furnished beautifully. The children thought the house was magical. We look forward to returning to France again soon'.

'We had such a marvellous time in Dinan ... much due to your memorable house! It was so well located for us. We had friends who rented a house on the Jerzual and they had a difficult time parking and by the end of their stay were exhausted with the walk from their accommodation to the old town. You must sometimes pinch yourself to ensure that you are not dreaming, to be responsible for such a gem'

'I must say, just like others, your house is amazing! It just looks so lovely from outside, I am sure we are in many photos!'

Great Place

  • 5 of 5

What a great place! What a great location! Step out your front door and you are a few steps from the middle of one of the most charming little medieval cities in France. If you don't think the house is charming, look out the window. About one in five tourists passing by stops to take a picture. Inside everything is equally charming. As a "Francophone" as a second language, I personally would've preferred to have French TV, French books, etc. For Anglophones, it's perfect. There are books, guidebooks and television that you will understand. Yes, the stairway is narrow, the door frames are for people about 5'6" and the bathroom is small. You're staying in a house that was built in the 1300s. If you want charm and ambience and history, that's part of it. I loved it.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind comments Allen. It was great having you stay with us. Sorry that it was not made clear to you that we do have French TV (provided by Orange). The satellite TV box is usually left on by English guests so that would have been the default, but you can change this by simply turning on the Orange box. My wife is a bit of a Francophile, so insisted we had French TV. However, on the book front - just a French dictionary I'm afraid! Again, thank you for spending your holidays with us. Noel and Cindy

Beautiful house, home from home

  • 5 of 5

First impression of the house and location was 'wow' and the inside didn't let us down either. Met on arrival by Andy (lovely man) who gave us all the information we required on the house and our stay in Dinan, even told us where to purchase a good bottle of wine (Lidl!)The house is truly a home from home with everything you require and need. The loft lounge made you want to stay in during the evening! English TV and wi-fi was a god send with a 14 year old in tow. You are able to load and unload your car outside the house as there is no parking. The owners provided us with a parking pass for the underground car park for 30 euro for the week which was a 3 minute walk from the property. Ideally situated to explore the wonders of Brittany, St Malo, Dinard and Mont St Michel all within half hour drive. Without hesitation we would visit again tomorrow both to the house and Dinan. Thank you so much for sharing your house with us!

Superb historic house ideally located in the historic center of Dinan

  • 5 of 5

The house is a treat in and of itself, built in the 1300's out of stone and timbers, and still in remarkable condition. Despite its age, it has all the modern conveniences. It would appear to me that this is a place the owners set up for their own use, and not just for a rental. The appliances all appear to be fairly new, and they are top quality. My wife and I like to do some cooking when we stay in an apartment, and this place is really well set up for that. The kitchen is quite large with very nice butcher-block type countertops, and the cookware is top quality. The house is comfortable furnished and tastefully decorated. The top-floor lounge area is a real treat.

The location is ideal, right in the main part of medieval Dinan, but a block or two away from most of the shops so that it's on a fairly quiet part of the street. Just a short half-block behind the house is a quiet little square with a couple of cafes - a great place to enjoy a coffee or whatever. There are plenty of shops and restaurants within a few blocks.

There is a very nice covered parking garage just a few minutes walk away, and for 30 euros the owner provided us with a parking pass that got us in and out as often as we wanted for the entire week we were there.

Sean, the onsite contact was very knowledgeable and helpful. This a very unique and special accommodation, which I would heartily recommend and would enjoy returning to.

Totally charming house in Medieval Dinan

  • 5 of 5

We really appreciated the rustic charm of this wonderful house in Medieval Dinan. The house was very clean and well maintained with en-suite shower rooms to both bedrooms. A lovely handmade rustic kitchen/diner downstairs had all the modern conveniences needed but retained much charm and personality. The top floor lounge was a great place to relax and watch the world (well Dinan) go about it's business. The house is in a perfect location to reach numerous bars and restaurants in the centre of Dinan where you can gorge on galettes, crepes and ice cream and drink plenty of the local cider and wine. Dinan has a great mix of shops, both those for the 'tourists' and those more for the locals. The local people are friendly and appreciate any efforts at speaking French but are happy to speak English when you struggle. It is easy to visit many wonderful locations from Dinan including Mont St. Michel and St. Malo. Brittany has miles of stunning coastline and we were struck by how clean and well-maintained it all is. There seems to be real civic pride in this area of Brittany, the area felt 'loved' and we definitely fell in love with it. The response and service from both the owners and the local property manager was excellent and we have no hesitation in recommending this superb holiday home in Dinan.

A wonderful home filled with character

  • 5 of 5

We had a brief stay of just 2 nights, but thoroughly enjoyed our time in Dinan. Really nice, medieval town with many nice shops & restaurants. The home is very comfortable, clean, and has so much character & history. Also the home is in a great location right in the heart of town -- no need to drive anywhere, just walk to the many shops & restaurants.

Charming character house in a lovely location

  • 5 of 5

The house is everything that the advert states. We were met by Sean the manager who had kindly agreed to allow us access to the house early to fit in with our ferry arrival times. Sean was incredibly helpful and accommodating. The house itself is a quaint house full of character and manages to retain its charm whilst providing the modern amenities needed to make it comfortable. It was spotlessly clean and all basic practical things were provided. The location was ideal, there were so many lovely walks, restaurants and things to see within walking distance that we found ourselves happy to potter around Dinan during our weeks stay. We will happily return and recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing break.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind review. We find that many of our guests spend their whole time in Dinan itself and don't find it necessary to venture further afield. The town offers so much in terms of shopping, restaurants and sights. We are so glad you enjoyed your stay with us and hope you will visit again in the future.

Location

Coast/Beach:

The Brittany Coast can be reached by car in 30 minutes. There are many beautiful beaches, coves and small towns all within a short drive from the house.

Travel:

The nearest airport is at Dinard, approximately 20 minutes from the house. Ryanair flies directly to Dinard from a number of locations in the UK. St Malo is approximately 30 minutes by car and Caen (which has a fast ferry) is approximately 2 hours by car.

Distances:

The house is located in the centre of the old town. From the town you can walk down the steep Jerzual cobbled street to the port - approximately 10 minutes. The walk back up from the port takes a little longer and is very dependent on your fitness.

Further Details:

From La Vieille Auberge explore the delights of Dinan; one of the most beautiful places in Brittany. This fortified town, established in the 9th century, overlooks the river Rance and the stone ramparts now enclose a uniquely preserved 11th century town. The centre of Dinan is filled with over 50 lively bars, cafes and restaurants. Specialities include a bewildering variety of galettes, delicious seafood and of course, cider. Thursday is market day in the main square of Dinan which celebrates Breton fare. Explore the pattern of narrow streets and cobbled alleys, crammed with Medieval timbered houses, many now housing quaint gift, antique and craft shops. See Renaissance Manors, town houses, built by East India Company officers, and Villas used by the British in Victorian times. Explore 2,800m of ramparts and 12 towers, also statues, churches, squares, gateways and gardens.

In Dinan there is a theatre and a cinema, and 2 swimming pools. Street festivals include the medieval Fete des Remparts. Dinan's art deco railway station has its own railway museum. Climb the 158 steps of the Tour de L'Horloge (the record is 3 minutes 47 seconds) to see nearly everything.

Walk through the centre of Dinan and down the steep Rue de Jerzual past galleries and craft shops, through the gate to the Port on the River Rance. There are more bars and restaurants, 2 bridges, boats for hire and riverboat excursions. Continue along the Rance tow-path to Lehon with its Abbey, Castle and heated open air swimming pool.
