Old Cognac Distillery, Perignac, Charente Maritime. Accommodation For 2 To 10 In A Calm Environment Within Walking Distance Of All Amenities

A single dwelling, formerly the master’s house, Old Cognac Distillery is perfect for an intimate holiday for two and yet suitable for larger parties alike, with up to four large bedrooms, including a children’s bedroom and comfortably sleeping 10. [Additional sleeping arrangements can be provided on request.]

A traditional french house, the property is set in grounds of two acres of which over an acre is a park of mature trees. Approached by a long balustraded terrace, the front entrance is through impressive, double, oak doors. There is a sense of history on entering the main reception rooms with their marble fireplaces, elegant plaster work and lofty ceilings. Climb up the walnut staircase to the upper level and you will tread antique wooden floors to airy louvred shuttered rooms. Very generously proportioned, with light filled spaces and furnished sympathetically Old Cognac Distillery offers flexible accommodation to suit a variety of needs. Enjoy every comfort of home, including a well appointed kitchen, additional separate shower room, satellite TV and wi-fi.

Leading from the main hall is the main reception room or Salon with double aspect views of the grounds to the front of the property. A well proportioned room, it is furnished with two large sofas and double bed settee. There is a marble fireplace with a wood-burning stove, DVD player and satellite TV with Freeview programmes.

Up the spiralling charentaise staircase is a large landing which leads to two generously sized double bedrooms each with en-suite facilities and a large children’s bedroom with its own separate toilet and basin.

The Master Bedroom has an individually commissioned king size four poster bed. The second bedroom [The Blue Room] has a vintage french bedroom suite with double bed. Bedroom three is the children’s bedroom with two sets of bunk beds and bedroom four, downstairs, overlooks the Courtyard. This has a typically french double bed and the use of the separate shower room. In total the house sleeps 10 comfortably. With prior arrangement sofa beds can be provided to accommodate extra guests.

In the back wing of the house, approached by a small set of stairs, is a well equipped kitchen. This is fitted with a cooker, microwave, dishwasher, large refrigerator and second fridge-freezer and a comprehensive array of cooking equipment for those who enjoy cooking. A real family meeting centre, there is a large bespoke dining table seating 12 and an island breakfast unit for two or three people to sit at.

Beyond the kitchen is a large rear hall with a washing machine for holiday laundry. Leading on from here is the Courtyard Bedroom, a separate toilet, large utility sink and access to the shower room.

Although heating is not necessary in the summer season, it can get cooler in spring and autumn. A central heating system provides heating to all rooms. There are wood burning stoves in the kitchen and salon. If heating is required a separate charge is made.

Whether you choose to be indoors or outside there is a space for everyone. Step out at the front of the house onto the terrace, wonderful for quietly enjoying the vista and tranquility of the park and, set with a table and chairs, an alternative space for outdoor eating.

To the rear is the large courtyard, secure behind the main gates, and accessed from the side personnel gate, close to the kitchen. Enclosed by farm buildings, dating back to when the property was a working farm, it offers a private and safe space, ideal for letting children play in unattended safety.

Within the courtyard’s enclosing buildings is the Preau, a large open fronted barn, originally used to store farm machinery. It is a shady, peaceful space furnished with a BBQ, dining table and chairs, lounging furniture and table tennis table, perfect for alfresco eating at any time of day. At the far end is the entrance to the gated, walled, former kitchen garden, providing a completely safe and secluded environment. Now laid to lawn with occasional seating spaces it has the large, automatically controlled 10m x 5m swimming pool. You will be able to find a relaxing place to suit you in the sun or under the trees in the shade. An outdoor table under the shade of the pergola offers an alternative spot for outdoor eating.

You will love spending time away from your busy world to relax in this lovely house, but if you want to do something more energetic, step outside the property to explore the vineyards and gently undulating farm land, perfect for cycling and walking. It is an easy walk to the main village, Perignac, where daily bread can be bought at the Tabac. There is also an excellent family restaurant/bar [Orchidee], take away pizza restaurant, village store with integral artisan butcher, excellent boulangerie, pharmacy and hairdresser. Opposite the church is the local cognac distillery, where you can enjoy a degustation and on some days fresh oysters can be bought in the square by the church.

Old Cognac Distillery, Preroux nr Perignac

The first (and lasting) impression of each of us (twelve of us stayed at various times) was that the distillery is a jaw-droppingly beautiful place to spend a family holiday. It is just as lovely as the photo shows but the courtyard and garden spaces beyond are no less impressive; everything is immaculately presented and very well maintained, we had everything we needed. The pool was our favourite thing but we also made full use of an excellently-appointed kitchen and we were able to eat outside every night under the stars. Our hosts were extremely helpful and anxious to make sure we had everything we needed. The distillery isn't far from the coast, or from Cognac, which is definitely worth a visit. We were sad to leave and would love to go back, next time armed with bikes; strongly recommended.

A delightful period property in a quiet location.

Maison maitre is a lovingly restored substantial house in a delightful rural setting. The English owners are most helpful and welcoming and well integrated in the community, which makes life much easier for the visitor. The property is particularly suitable for families: plenty of space, a swimming pool, table tennis table etc. One has the sense of being welcomed into a family home, at the same time one has privacy. The house is well maintained, clean and comfortable. The surrounding area gives scope for walking, cycling, visiting vineyards and local restaurants. Highly recommended.

A nice surprise.

We booked this at the last minute for a place to stay enroute to the South. The warmth and welcome from Geoff & Judith was such that we decided to extend our stay. The house is a gem which has been restored with due care and the original fireplaces all add to the allure of accommodation. Geoff is a bit of a wine expert so he was able to recommend some excellent wines for us to take back to England. We couldn't have wished for a better autumn stopover.
