About this property

17th Century Farmhouse With Large Enclosed Garden In Tranquil Countryside

Set in the beautiful and unspoilt countryside of Lower Normandy, ‘L'Abri’ is perfect for those who are looking to get away from it all and yet want the convenience of local shops and services. Set in a small hamlet but only five minutes from the lovely town of Villedieu-les-Poêles and within striking distance of the ferry ports, Mont St. Michel, Bayeux and some of the best beaches in Normandy, the house is ideally located for a relaxing and enjoyable holiday. The house was built in the late 1600s and has been tastefully renovated in recent years. It has five bedrooms (and an additional loft room with futon) and can house up to 10 adults/children.

A great location to visit places of interest
The property was very spacious and accommodated our family well. 4 adults and 4 children aged 6 - 10. You have everything on hand to ensure that this is a home from home. Andrew the owner is very approachable and gives lots of useful information about the property, the local area and good places to visit. We enjoyed eating outside - although we moved the picnic bench to the front lawn as this is where the sun was in the evening. We all played in the garden - we took plenty of outdoor games, so could play basketball, tennis and football. The weather was mixed but this did not deter from the holiday. The farmhouse has heaters which can be put on when it goes a little cold. This is a good place to spend time with family or friends to have quality time.

Wonderful House near Villedieu les poeles
This was the fifth time we have stayed L' Abri. We keep going back as it suits us and our friends so well. The house is peaceful and quiet with a huge garden and plenty of room for a large family or group of friends. It is less than ten minutes drive to Villedieu les poeles which is one of our favourite places in Normandy. The town has a great market on a Tuesday and enough places to eat with a variety of prices to suit all tastes. We uaually have Moule frites at the Union Bar, the Plat du Jour at Le Pussoir and round off our holiday with a special evening meal at La Ferme de Malte . It is easy to visit Avranches, Bayeux, Mont St Michel, Granville and Fougeres when when staying at L' Abri and this year we also went further afield to Honfleur and Lisieux. After a full day out it is lovely to return to L' Abri ( well-named "the shelter/sanctuary " )and to sit outside watching the stars as there is almost no light pollution and listen to the sounds of the countryside. The owner, Andrew is very helpful and provides a lot of information about the house and places to visit nearby. We will definitely be returning !

LOVELY FAMILY HOLIDAY
Excellent place for a family holiday with plenty of beds, and a large garden where children can run around safely. The kitchen is well equipped and there is plenty of fridge and freezer space. The boulangerie is 5 minutes drive away for the morning croissants, and they also sell milk and some groceries. The local town of Villedieu is well worth a visit, especially on market day, and the zoo on the other side of the town is excellent and very family friendly. The top (attic) bedrooms can be affected by noise from below as there is no door on either staircase leading to them. If you use the BBQ please clean it for the next guests as it's not pleasant to have to do this before you can use it. We had a problem with the gas running out while cooking a meal but we did a workaround and the cylinder was replaced the next day. Overall we very much enjoyed our stay there and would be happy to return.

We are a family of five living in S E England. We fell in love with our Normandy holiday home on our first visit, have enjoyed staying in it, and would love to use the house to introduce others to this wonderful part of France.

Why they chose this property

Having enjoyed several holidays in the region, we chose this particular part of Normandy for the beauty of the countryside, the stunning beaches and for the rich history and cuisine. We also loved the wonderfully preserved nearby town, which felt authentically French. Being so easy to reach from the UK (just an hour from the Ferry) has also enabled us to rediscover holidays that are genuinely relaxing and hassle-free!

What makes this property unique

We love the freedom and space that the house provides - both inside and out. We also appreciate the great combination of a peaceful location and great access to bustling towns, beautiful beaches and wonderful historical sites. Experiencing many self-catering holidays over the years, we've come to discover and appreciate what makes a place a great holiday home. We hope you agree!
