About David Wilson

I am a recently retired community pharmacist and my wife is a retired teacher. We love using the cottage ourselves when not occupied by guests and take a pride in presenting it to a high standard. As we live less than an hour away from the property we are able to clean and service it ourselves to ensure standards are maintained.

David Wilson purchased this cottage in 2010

Why David Wilson chose Whitby

Having bought a holiday cottage in Pickering in 2009 we decided the best pension plan was to buy another one and let them out for a few weeks each year to cover their running costs. We chose Whitby for our second cottage simply because we really like the town. We have spent many weekends there since we bought the cottage and we have still got plenty of places in the town to visit. We are keen walkers and mountain bikers but we have yet to exhaust all the possible routes from the cottage. We particularly enjoy cycling on the railway track which runs all the way to Scarborough and walking on the beautiful cliff path to Robin Hoods Bay.

What makes this cottage unique

Whitby is a fantastic town with lots to do. It has loads of excellent restaurants but our favourites are the Marine and the White Horse and Griffin. There is also a fish and chip shop at the bottom of our steps which we think serves the best fish and chips in Whitby. From the cottage we can walk out into the countryside or enjoy a lazy day on the beach with a BBQ. As we enjoy fishing we often go out to sea with one of the local fishing boats.

Coast/Beach:

Whitby is an enchanting seaside town with a large number of excellent pubs and restaurants. It is steeped in history with connections to Captain Cook and the Dracula story. The beaches and coastal paths are close to the cottage within 15 minutes walk. The station of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from which you can board a train to take you on a memorable trip through the outstanding beauty of the North Yorkshire Moors is also about 15 minutes walk from the cottage.

Distances:

The beautiful coastal villages of Robin Hood's Bay, Staithes and Runswick Bay are within easy reach and well worth a visit. The steam railway is a good way to access the North Yorkshire Moors villages of Goathland and Grosmont and the market town Pickering which is at the end of the railway route. We also have a cottage in Pickering (E1304). There is an excellent cycle route along the old railway line to Scarborough and wonderful cliff paths which form part of the Cleveland Way.

Great position and views

  • 5 of 5

Great little cottage, well equipped (incl dishwasher) and handy for town centre. Easy parking. It's up a fairly steep series of steps so wouldn't neccessarily suit someone with restricted mobility but there are probably other ways down to the waterside. I have a knee and lower back problem and I managed OK with only a bit of grumbling! Lovely lounge with stove, galley kitchen, dining area and great main bedroom. Bathroom has WC and an interesting circular shower curtain so it can get a tad congested in the morning with 4 adults but we still managed. No one was killed!

Great restaurants in (fairly) easy walking distance especially if you like good, seriously good, fish and chips. Other food preferences also catered for but why would you? We went to the Stables (short drive) for Christmas Lunch and it was excellent.

Walking distance from a very good Co-op and short drive to Sainsburys. Neither were mobbed even tho' it was Christmas week.

Walking distance to the ruined abbey which is worth a look. Many other attractions within a short drive but you'll know that from trip advisor.

I would be happy to return in late spring but maybe just the two of us.

Lovely cottage in a great location

  • 4 of 5

First time in Whitby and we loved it. The cottage was comfortable, warm and well equipped. Overall it was very charming. Not so good if you are stair-phobic, but the views well made up for that! The owners have put a lot of thought into the decor and comfort, which was much appreciated. A very enjoyable and successful holiday in all!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review and I agree with you about the stairs but that is the nature of the old cottages in Whitby. The views from the top bedroom are certainly worth the effort though.

Lovely Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Cosy cottage with everything we needed for a relaxing break. Not for people who can't climb stairs but for those who can you can see the harbour and Whitby Abbey from the bedroom window.

It's obviously a home away from home for the owners which adds to the comfort. Walking distance from the town centre with just a couple of flights of steps up from the harbour.

We would happily stay there again
