Secluded 3 Bed House with Heated Swimming Pool, Outdoor Kitchen & Large Gardens

Updated: 28-Nov-2016
House nr La Chataignerie in the Vendee, France - Secluded And Peaceful Location Short Drive To Local Town, Lakes, Forests And Main Road Network

Please check out our facebook page at facebook.com/lagare.gite for regular updates. And click below for more details ......

La Gare is a renovated railway house set in large split level gardens, with mature trees, a play area, quiet seating areas, a luxury outdoor kitchen and dining area and a heated outdoor 8m x 4m swimming pool. The Gite is free of neighbours, yet easily accessible to local towns and major road networks. This spacious and well appointed family home is in an ideal location to explore the Vendee, as well as providing guests with plenty of space to relax and unwind without living on top of each other. Each can find their own way to enjoy this well loved home, whether on a hammock under a mature oak tree, sitting/sunbathing next to the swimming pool, eating outside at the luxurious fully equipped outdoor kitchen, on the patio or the large flat lawns, evening walks on the adjacent footpaths, snuggled on large sofas in the evening for films, TV, games or to simply watch the wood burner flicker - the choice is yours.

Almost the entire property is wheelchair / disabled friendly - from the ground floor bedroom and shower wet room, to the level entrance to the walled garden and outdoor kitchen, the gentle slope up to the pool entrance, and also the slope up to the upper garden.

The ground floor master bedroom can be a suite on its own if desired - nicely secluded from the rest of the house by a small lobby, and with the shower wet room adjacent, you can have all the privacy you need ! It can also make a fabulous family room if required - there is a double sofa bed, or we can put a single bed in the alcove, hardly affecting the space available. This makes La Gare suitable for not just a single family, or an extended family, but also for 2 families to share, the second shower room upstairs is situated right between the 2 upstairs bedrooms - if you would like any advice on how we can help accommodate you, please give us a call or email - we are always happy to help if we can.

About the Owner

We moved to the Vendee 11 years ago and haven't looked back. We found La Gare, fell in love with it and have enjoyed making into a true family home. We have now however built ourselves a new home a little farther south, and so have the opportunity to share La Gare with others. Many family and friends have come here, enjoying the large gardens, evening walks to the viaduct giving amazing sunsets (glass of wine in hand optional), cycle tracks next to the house or just lying in a hammock under the mature Oak trees. And brand new for 2016, we are currently upgrading to include a new outdoor 8m x 4m heated swimming pool, with surrounding luxurious, fully equipped, outdoor kitchen and dining areas. Outdoor living will never have felt so good ! Over the years we have also discovered the Mervant forest and the Marais (green Venice) to cycle and canoe as well as the local Abbeys and historical towns and villages to wander around. What more can we say, you just have to come visit.

Perfect for our needs.

  • 5 of 5

The property was ideally situated away from neighbours for our three dogs and the garden was totally secure with plenty of room for them to run around and lots of places for us to enjoy the sunshine. The swimming pool was fantastic and was used every day as the weather was so hot and the outdoor kitchen area was lovely. The bedrooms were very comfortable and the rest of the house was great. A fantastic holiday which I would recommend to others. Thanks to Ian et al for making our stay so good.

Secluded hideaway in stunning countryside

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay, having enjoyed it so much last year.

The house is beautiful with spacious accommodation and stunning garden. The pool, once finished is going to enhance it even more as it has been so lovingly thought out.

The whole area is peaceful and beautiful with a feeling of being very rural but with a large town and all its facilities a short drive away.

Great location to explore all of the Vendee, from Vouvant to Fontenay or out to La Rochelle

If you like walking or cycling the old railway lines offer a pretty and safe way of exploring the countryside.

We are already booking our next stay!

Good value long winter let

  • 4 of 5

This property provided an ideal base for exploring the area. We were there for 9 weeks and found the furnishings etc comfortable. UK tv and log burner a bonus on cold winter's evenings. Ian and family were very welcoming and helpful. No problems with the plumbing, unlike previous reviewers, maybe because we are used to the peculiarities of French systems! Quietly located property so ideal if you have kids or dogs as there are no neighbours to disturb. We found it very relaxing with great walks starting right outside the door. La Chataigneraie is 5 mins drive away and has supermarkets etc to provide everyday needs. The market at Fontenay la Comte is ok on a Saturday although there is a bigger market at Niort. A bit further afield, we found good beach walks near La Rochelle, Tranche sur Mer and Sables d'Olonne as well as the great walks in Mervent-Vouvant forest close to the house. We look forward to seeing the new pool area which was being built while we were there.

Charming house, great for families and friends reunions

  • 4 of 5

We had a great stay at Ian's house. We were warmly welcomed in this great and charming house. We were 8 people and there was enough place for everyone. The fireplace is such a pleasant thing to have around. Kitchen is spacious and big enough to cook for the whole crew. We did not hang out much in the garden or the terrace as the weather wasn't on our side and it was pretty cold, but it is well located for some walks in the countryside.

The communication before and during our stay was nice and effective.

We just think that the cleanliness of the house could be improved as some kitchen utensils had to be cleaned before use and we found some dirt in some areas. But overall, we recommend this nice place to anyone!

A lovely family holiday home for exploring.

  • 4 of 5

First of all I would like to address some of the previous comments which I believe the owners have taken on board and I also think it has a lot to do with the expectations of the reviewers. I agree it could do with a general spruce up, a lick of paint in the main area, and the kitchen was a bit unkempt but the garden was tidy and the pond was a nice feature (although I believe this is being replaced with a pool). The owners were particularly helpful and quick to sort out any issues that did arise. We found the property to be ideal for what we needed which was to use it as a base for exploring the area.

The area itself was ideal with local amenities providing everything we needed within a 5 minute drive. The path opposite does have bungee jumping from the viaduct but I believe this is rare and mainly in the summer. The old railway track was perfect for cycling, particularly with kids, managing to cycle all the way to the aquarium and wildlife parc just outside Moncoutant. Vouvant is a gorgeous place to visit and a walk around the surrounding river is recommended. We spent most of our time exploring the Mervent forest, lots of nice walks and tracks to explore and enjoy a picnic. We also managed a day trip to La Rochelle, just under an hours drive away.

Would I recommend this property? If you're looking for a nice, basic, base to explore the surrounding area then definitely. However, if you're looking to sit in the house/garden all day then I suggest the property needs a little more attention.

3 star house, 5 star surroundings.

mixed experience

  • 2 of 5

This was a mixed experience for us. Ian and his dad were friendly and helpful which was much appreciated when needed. The area was lovely with plenty to see and do and easy to get around and we had a lovely holiday. The gite's location was perfect for us and the garden (if rather neglected) and swimming pond were charming. Sadly the accommodation did not reflect the standards we have had at other Owners Direct properties. We found similar issues to earlier reviewers. All the equipment, furniture and soft furnishings were in need of replacement and/or a good clean. The place was definitely not clean, including cups and cooking equipment. Also we don't know where the 8th person would have slept as we squeezed in a small boy with 6 adults but certainly couldn't have slept 8 adults.

Owner's Response: I'm glad the large family enjoyed much that we have to offer including our assistance and help to make sure their stay was good as possible. Though they had a challenging 2 weeks with indifferent weather which was a contrast to the previous 6 weeks of very dry weather But as with any review certain words can imply more than is said so i must respond to some of the points raised quite strongly. Firstly the word "neglect" in terms of the garden implies that the garden is not looked after and possibly worse. The Photos in the advert were taken in spring this year to reflect that we have put in a new driveway, renovated the front gate and pillars, introduced 3 new stone walls to give a new area to enjoy the sun and improve privacy, extend the area at the rear of the swimming pond and secure the area behind the pond area and one very long wall to extend the top garden and enhance the lower garden. we will be carrying on improving the house in the low season along with more landscaping to really enhance the facilities. "The place was definitely not clean, including cups and cooking equipment" in this case i strongly disagree with this very general phrase - considering we were in attendance on numerous occasions especially at the start of the stay and not word was mentioned to us about it i do find surprising that if it was as bad as is implied by the statement no complaint was made for us to either deal with the problem or compensate in some way. If there was a specific issue then i could happily comment and accept but such a wide ranging comment implies more than it means. Regards equipment which pieces and does this include the new double bed, flat screen tv new throws white goods etc - this very general statement implies a lot without any detail with which i can respond to. Regards the "8th" person - we state we can accommodate 6-8 people - i,e we have 6 permanent beds with the ability to introduce 2 other beds f needed (there is a collapsible bed always in the house along with 2 beds we store) The master bedroom is very large 4mx8m (photo in advert)and can take the extra beds without trouble and have done so in the past even after clients have arrived. So a larger family can benefit from using our Gite In the past reviews which are critical are read and received with good grace and are used to reflect upon and improve what we offer. But in this case the review is unjust in many ways so feel obliged to respond in the way i have done so
