About the Owner

After spending many happy holidays in the Lake District with our three children we eventually bought Bluebell Cottage 10 years ago. We have made the cottage a home from home as we still use it ourselves. Our three children, now all grown up, love the cottage and the Lake District, especially Ambleside as it is so convenient.

Perfect place to enjoy the Lakes (and mountains!)

  • 5 of 5

We (family with 3 teenage boys) had a wonderful stay at Bluebell Cottage at the end of October. The cottage is in a brilliant location, quiet on the edge of Ambleside but only a short 5 minute walk down the hill into the village centre. We parked outside the house when we arrived and didn't get back into the car until we left a week later, there are plenty of walks and attractions on the doorstep. The views (especially the sunsets) are wonderful, and the house was well heated and comfortable, with plenty of space and everything you need for an enjoyable stay. Chrissie and David were very friendly and easy to communicate with, and the local help was very efficient. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend this house and hope to return again soon.

A cosy cottage in a fantastic location with great views

  • 5 of 5

A great location just a few minutes walk into the centre of Ambleside which meant we didn't have to drive anywhere for the whole weekend. There were lots of shops, cafes and restaurants as well as superb walks all accessible from the cottage - we particularly enjoyed our meal at The Log House.

The cottage itself was clean and cosy with fantastic views. There was lots of room - good sized bedrooms and a big hall to put boots and coats. The kitchen was well-equiped and the stove in the lounge was a real treat.

We are already thinking of booking again for next year.

Bluebell cottage was an excellent base for walking yet superbly convenient to all the amenities of Ambleside. Spacious and comfortable with a fantastic view. We didn't use the car once during our stay and are looking forward to returning later in the year. Thank you!

Hidden Gem

  • 5 of 5

I don't really want to write this review. This is one of those hidden gems you feel you want to keep a secret to yourself.

Pictures don't do it justice. It is so much bigger than you appreciate. The nick picky things just aren't worth mentioning because it has so much going for it.

We parked car up and never moved it.

The vista is striking from the picture window in the cosy lounge that's organised to be very sociable. Lots of lamps to create a warm ambiance in the evening. Typical cottage feel with the wooden beams and solid fuel fire. For those that cannot leave technology behind there is wifi and TV/dvd. The kitchen is well provided for cooking needs and has its own table & chairs but we chose to eat in the dining area to take advantage of that view.

The entrance hall is perfect for getting out of wet and/or muddy outdoor gear, particularly if it's raining. The radiator here will take care of drying them out for your next venture.

The heating is excellent and warms the cottage right through. The bedrooms are beautifully decorated and furnished and full of charm. The beds are very comfortable (for me).

The two bathrooms are a bonus and finished to a high standard. Best electric shower I have ever used.

It's location means just a five minute walk into Ambleside centre to its many cafes, restaurants and pubs......oh and shops. But it's also ideal to start off walks for Wansfell and Loughrigg.

All places can often demonstrate room for improvement. We've not found ourselves wanting for any changes. It's a place I hope we can come back to again.

Bluebell Cottage

  • 4 of 5

This house is well appointed and comfortable. It is close enough to the centre of Ambleside to be 'convenient' - it's a five minute walk. There are good views from the front towards the Langdales. The grass bank in front of the row of houses of which this one is at the far end provides a sense of space that is not frequently found with other holiday accommodation in the town. The second 'bathroom' (it has a shower) makes this house a good base for two couples as each has their own.

There are some games for wet days, along with DVDs and a comprehensive collection of brochures to help plan your activities.

Ambleside is a good place for walking: to Grasmere or Elterwater, onto Loughrigg or Wansfell Pike (half day) or more energetically around the Fairfield Horseshoe. From here you can also explore Windermere using the ferries that ply up and down. The town also provides a good base for getting to other parts of the area such as Consiton, Hawkshead or Keswick.

So all in all, a good place.

Location

From the Owner

We bought Bluebell Cottage because we wanted somewhere to escape to and came across this delightful property whilst looking for other properties in the area. Bluebell Cottage appealed to us straight away because it is set above the village of Ambleside in a quiet backwater away from the crowds and has stunning views across the fells. It is in a great position for walkers as the cottage is centrally located for exploring the Lake District and there are also great walks from the doorstep. The cruises that run the length of Lake Windermere are five minutes walk away at Waterhead and from here you can hire rowing boats. With the village of Ambleside only a few minutes walk from the cottage there is so much to do and see in the area you can never be bored. We love it.

Activity and Interests

Travel:

Easy access is by car, or by rail to Windermere station which is 15 minutes taxi ride away. The nearest airport is Manchester which is approx. 1 hour away. There is parking for 1 car directly outside the cottage. Please note that parking is a problem in the Lakes especially during high season and we can only guarentee 1 car parking space directly in front of the cottage. There is additional road side parking just below the cottage and on streets nearby.

Distances:

The picturesque village of Ambleside is 2 minutes walk downhill from Bluebell Cottage. The lake ferries are 10 minutes walk away and Windemere town is 15 mins. by car. There are numerous places of interest in the area depending on your interests. You will find arts and crafts houses, cinemas, sailing, rowing, horse riding, beautiful gardens, quad biking and gourmet restaurants all within easy reach. There is a tourist information centre situated in the post office in the centre of the village.

Further Details:

There are a couple of small supermarkets in Ambleside and a Tesco Express. In Windermere, next door to the railway station, is Booths Supermarket which has an extensive range of quality foods. We recommend stocking up there en route to the cottage and shopping locally for top ups. Freddie Garside is the best butcher in the village -you'll find his tiny shop up the road right of the post office and past the pub. There are cash machines in the village and outside Tesco supermarket.

Parking in the village is free, however it is time limited and you will need to display a disc to show your time of arrival. There are some in the cottage and they are also available for free from most shops, information centre and post office. There is jazz every Saturday night at Zeferellis and folk singing twice a week in the Unicorn pub, which is up the road to the right of the post office.

Facilities

From the Owner

Bluebell Cottage has everything you need to make your stay extremely comfortable. It has been decorated to our taste and is a cosy haven of peace. As you enter the cottage there is a porch with a range of storage for boots and coats - great for wet weather and sailing gear. In the sitting room there is a wood burning stove for cosy evenings by the fire. There is a dining table in the sitting room which pulls out to seat eight comfortably so that you have the choice to eat in style or at the large pine kitchen table. The dining kitchen is fully equipped with all that you could possibly need. The village of Ambleside, which sits at the top end of Lake Windermere, has a range of restaurants offering a variety of choice, plus numerous shops, information centre, library and great cinema.

Bluebell Cottage has a small paved patio area outside the kitchen door where there is a table and chairs. At the front of the cottage there is a bench where you can sit and enjoy the beautiful view. In the summer an additional table is stored in the porch for use outside so that you can also have dinner catching the evening sun whilst overlooking the fells.
