Old Castle Inn is a historic converted public house with 5 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 4 downstairs seating areas, a wood burner and unique architectural features with gothic themes. It provides characterful and substantive accommodation for families, ramblers, cyclists and visitors to nearby Alton Towers. Well behaved dogs are welcome with pre agreement. The house sits in the heart of the beautiful listed village of Alton, close to pubs, excellent restaurants, late opening shops and the famous Pugin roofed Alton Castle.

The house has a large conservatory overlooking a good sized and part walled garden. The downstairs has a library and music room, and there are lots of books, toys and videos for children.

We lived here until 2011, and unable to sell it when we moved down south for work, we have now converted it to a holiday let. We love this house and come up as often as we can.

Quirky and characterful property

Quirky property with loads of character and plenty of space. Lovely fireplaces for hunkering down for chats and wine (well we were 7 ladies!) Comfortable beds and well equipped in the pretty town of Alton.

Characterful village house

Quiet and peaceful except for the noise that you and all your people that this house can accommodate create yourselves. So, it's a big house ideal for family reunions.

Although the owners were not present or nearby, communication with them was quick and excellent. When we had questions, the answers were there in just some minutes. (But there is enough information sheets given in the house.)

Very quirky with lots of interesting features.

Property generally clean but some attention to details required-cooker, floors under sofas. Everything supplied that was needed, such as dishwasher tablets, tea towels, spare loo rolls, which was a bonus. House was the right size for our large family, but garden a bit messy-a bit of TLC needed.

Nice looking old terrace Pub

A fantastic well kept house with 5 large bedrooms. A fine dining room, cosy living room and extremely large kitchen which kept 10 adults very comfortable over a long weekend.

This in a very picturesque little town with a plethora of nice pubs, excellent walks and beautiful scenery.

Brilliant stay in fabulous house

We choose this property for a family get together and it turned out to be a great choice. There's was loads of room for the kids, the toys and music room kept then enterntained for hours. The well equipped kitchen was spot on and had everything we needed, the beds were comfortable and rooms were amazing. The village of Alton was friendly and accessible with amazing pubs on the doorstep. we'll definately be returning soon I hope!

Bit short of beaches-1hr 30m drive to North Wales and Wirral beaches.


East Midlands Airport, 35 minutes by car. Car would be useful, but not essential as plenty of places to visit by foot or bus (including Alton Towers).


Alton Towers 1 mile. Dimmingsdale and Churnet Valley 1 mile. Cheadle, including 'Pugin Church', 4 miles. Uttoxeter, 7 miles. Ashbourne, 9 miles.

Dovedale, 12 miles. Leek, 14 miles. Stoke-on-Trent, 14 miles. Derby 18 miles. Buxton, including Poole Cavern and Opera House, about 25 miles

Lichfield, Dr. Johnson museum and cathedral about 30 miles.

Further Details:

Alton Village: Castle and Pugin buildings, churches, post office, 4-5 fine pubs, many provide food and/or have restaurant attached, late-opening mini-mart, children's recreation area, riverside and country walks.

Further afield: Dimmingsdale and Staffordshire Way a short walk away.

Book via website or by e mailing. Refundable 'good house keeping' deposit of £150 against damage or unacceptable mess. 25% on booking, full payment 8 weeks prior to arrival.
Please note this is a terraced house with children next door, so although a certain amount of noise is perfectly acceptable, and the walls are thick (castle stone!) it is not suitable for large groups of adults only if think you may be noisy after pub times.

Changeover Day:
Friday or Monday, but flexibility for short breaks.Weekend rates are the same for 2 or 3 nights. Friday and Saturday only stays have access to the house for as long as needed on the Sunday.

Notes on prices:
3 night stays welcome all through the year from £385 to £625 per weekend. Please enquire about midweek rates as they are cheaper out of school holidays. These prices can be viewed on owners website.
20% reduction on the price for groups of 6 people or less, and cheaper deals for artists and workers needing accommodation in the area.
Groups of more than 8 adults will be charged an extra £35 per person per stay.
Dogs £15 per stay.
